Breaking Down Alex Murdaugh's Pathological Lying - Criminal Mind of Pathological Liars

What’s the criminal psychology of a pathological liar?
As a jury of Alex Murdaugh’s peers have made clear Alex lied constantly. He not only lied to police the night his youngest son and wife were murdered and lied to his clients to steal millions of dollars from them, but he also lied constantly on the witness stand effectively committing perjury when he testified in his murder trial claiming complete innocence that he had no idea who could have murdered his family. Although Alex’s attorneys were happy to present a bogus story to the jury with virtually no evidence that they weren’t killed by Alex, who’s 6’4”, but instead killed by a group of 11-year-olds who were 5’2”. Anyway, Alex Murdaugh is clearly a pathological liar, but what is psychologically causing him to do that?
Pseudologia fantastica, or more commonly known as pathological lying, is a very complex behavior with a variety of underlying causes. Here are some of the reasons why people become pathological liars and see which ones you think best suit Alex Murdaugh.

Yes I have met a pathological liar. One of my childhood good friends lied about everything even when confronting him about it he would just lie some more after a few years I stopped hanging out with him since it was too frustrating to have a conversation cause he would embellish or lie about things I knew were lies. Surprisingly he became a minister after high school.

Chris Watts said the same thing in the police interview room just before he confessed to killing his pregnant wife and two young daughters. The "never" part is highly significant. It's because it can only be a lie - to "never" be able to commit a horrific crime isn't humanly possible. Only flapping our arms and flying away is impossible. It's always all too possible for someone to harm their own children, or worse.

Yeah, the “intentionally” word made zero sense. I mean, I would never hurt my husband, intentionally or otherwise. I love him so much, I do anything possible to make his life better. Then to the judge, he used the wrong verb tense. He should have said, I didn’t kill my wife and son,” not “I would never hurt...” the “would never” suggests the future, which is impossible since Maggie and Pau-Pau are dead. I used that tense in my personal example because I have a future with my hubs because he’s not deceased. So it rubbed me raw both times he said it. I guess they don’t teach proper English at his law school. I call the drawl and the bad grammar ‘Southern grammar.” I had a boyfriend from AL. He said “peels” for pills and “wahf” for wife. Then he would drawl out bad grammar to tease me. Called me “Dahlin.” (Darling) It made me feel special until I found him calling his dog Dahlin. Lol. We had such fun teasing each other about our accents. He had been a singer and radio announcer, and he could turn the accent on and off. Anyway, I teach English (I’m embarrassed to say that I can’t remember the names of all the verb tenses) so when I hear incorrect verb usage, it rubs on my nerves.

Reach out to Jesus. Call upon His name. He will not only save you from your sins, he can heal you. Your behavior, and how you feel about it from your past. When reconciled with God, it brings peace. And makes it easier to confess to others who you've hurt and ask for forgiveness and he reconciled with them as well. Romans 5 1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. 6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

The only specific thing I can remember, as I'm 35 years old now, was her talking on the phone to this boy that she likes and saying that we were at the mall, but really we were at walmart. It was just ridiculous. And this is one random example of a thousand. I just can't remember anything else specifically. One of my neighbors is like this now. It's so insane. What causes it is narcissistic parenting in a narcissistic culture. In such a culture we're made to think who we are on the outside is everything, and who we really are on the inside is something bad that needs to be hidden behind appearances. You're one of the lucky ones - you sided with who you are on the inside, so you ended up suffering every time you confronted your mere appearance to others. By comparison, the people who are really screwed in life are those who buy into the appearance game and in the process lose who they really are on the inside. In short, they're suckers. You're not. But our narcissistic culture makes you pay a price either way.

We're musicians... so one thing he'll do is lie about really inconsequential stuff. Like, he bought a guitar not long ago... instead of just being like yeah i asked dude to go down on the price a little... he goes on this rant about how he really worked on this dude for an hour and talked him down and this and that happened and this and that happened. Instead of the really simple 10 minute affair it was it became this epic duel of fates that truly put him in the light of being able to MAKE THE DEAL of a lifetime. Lol... But he does this with almost EVERYTHING he talks about. Every time. Nothing is simple nor ever easy. Its something that has developed over the years. When we were young it was just the occasional embellishments and stuff. And even then that was rare. But the chick he married went through this like... 6 year controlling thing and he didnt work or see any of his friends the whole time. That shit really messed him up. Hes a social creature and that just blasted all his occasional eccentricities up and mutated them into these full on psychological issues. I still love him and would do anything in the world for him. Ive just learned how to see through his bullshit and just ignore it. He knows he does it. He knows that i know he does it. He knows that i know that he knows that i know... blah blah blah... he tries not to go on too many rants. Lol

yeah I met several but I'm starting to figure them out has I learn more about narc personalities. The last one is one moved into my trailer park and across from me was the worst but lucky for me I figured her out before she could do me harm. She is her own worst enemy because of her behavior, she said to me " You better not fuck me up" when I called her out on it and began the grey rock system and sat back and watched her destroy herself and those who also got to know her. it is no surprise that her friendships are short term and end with hostility and yet after time and in time of need she has tried to reach out to me with a common goal and I still said no. If it had not been for the fact that I have learned to save text messages and voice mails she would have had me evicted from my address of 20 plus years over things she made up. Also she tried to anti freeze my cat, it survived but that's not something I intend to ever forgive or forget. Yesterday I saw the land lord order her to stay in her own yard and talk to no one in the trailer park or she will be evicted. It felt good to me to see this, and to see her, see me, see it. What is worst of all is that has times get harder for us all, they seem to be coming more and more out of the wood work and more desperate.

Your last two sentences are so true and so scary. What exactly do you mean by “as times get harder”? Are you referring to finances or lack of morality or both or something else? I think the farther we push God away from daily society, such as removing prayer from schools and acting like it’s evil to be a Christian, the more acceptable is evil, and the more evil people become. I also think the terrible American diet with such heavy emphasis on processed “foods,” has led to across the board malnutrition, causing plenty of additional problems. The digital age has exposed people to all sorts of bad values, normalized the abnormal, and numbed their minds from critical thinking. Throw in widespread use of marijuana, crack, meth, and other drugs, and minds are fried. It’s like the inmates are running the institutions.

@@christinerobinson890 I was referring to financial hardships, she was trying to get "free" whatever possible from me, but not just here and there ,I don't mind doing something to help someone once in a while or giving away something I have but they need but not on a daily basis. Every text I got from her started with either "I need" or "I want", never once said Hi, how are you. But all the other things you mentioned are very much part of it. Has soon has I started saying no she had a tantrum. Everything she told me about herself was made up and became clear has time went by.

As George says 'its not a lie if you believe it'. I'm a pathological liar and I say this to myself in preparation. It's usually to create a narrative that would better fit the situation. I'm also very impulsive. I overshare and embellish. Often I cringe at myself later, but it's really hard to stop.

I've met a few pathological liars. Mainly minor things with someone I went to school with but oh man when I went to college I met a doozy There was this girl who went to community college with us "hilly billy folk (what she called us in a very fake New York to southern jersey accent which probably wasn't real). Apparently her parents are so wealthy and she was so wealthy they had a private jet that would fly her anywhere she wanted to go. When asked why she wasn't going to a school like Harvard (where her parents were alumni apparently) she said that her parents wanted her to be with the poor people to get some "perspective". It was very Inventing Anna type. What was funny was that I just kept saying "me too" and her lies got worse and worse from there. Looking back that probably wasn't the right thing to do but I was drunk and a dumb college kid... so eh.

Hey Derek thanks for the great content and for all your hard work. I live a life of pseudologia fantastica. As human beings we are full of sht, sometimes I can't even trust myself. I mean I used to believe that money is evil, religion is evil etc. Those are all man made tools that have been exploited. Evil is a man made tool as well and it serves to punish. Anyway what I mean is that we do not fully understand the world we live in and it gives us a lot of freedom sometimes maybe to much. Thanks again for the awesome channel. ✌️

Hey Derek, first off: Love your content! Ive been subscribed for around 2 years and have seen this channel grow Secondly though, the background ambience is very distracting. Especially the high pitched noises. I know your probably trying to go for an unnerving ambience but there are other kinds of more low-key type sounds/music that can accomplish that.

I agree, to an extent. One thing is that some people will know or suspect you're lying, but just go along with whatever you're saying. My mom is like that. She won't confront someone on their lie she just lets them continue & goes along with it. Acting like she believes them. She sometimes puts it into a pocket in her mind for later to confront you on though, which I hate. Lol. She's used it on me before.
