TW: Please be advised going into the video, that unpleasant images will be shown. We are talking about an animal who was rescued, and what injuries she has endured at the cost of her handlers. I run my small animal rescue with volunteers, and nothing surprises me anymore but it still breaks me sometimes.
Please teach your children to respect animals, never leave an animal alone with your child and always guide your child through their pet keeping journey together. Children should NEVER be the solo keeper of a living being when still growing up. Please don't get your kids animals as gifts for their achievements or out of guilt. If you have no time to take care of an animal for your child, you shouldn't own an animal till you're ready and able.

I will finally be making the long awaited Brachycephalic hamster video, should be out this week. Brachy basically is a disability for hamsters with the shape of their skull. Like brachy cats/dogs with the squished face. Check out my other brachycephalic videos of the past to see more about the disability and what these special need hamsters look like. 🐹 - Sorry for any confusion.

Hey, I'm new here, and I hate to bother you in the comments of your video, but I can't figure out any other way. In the beginning of this video you mentioned the cage size, I've been thinking about getting two Russian Dwarf hamsters, I was looking at a low flat cage that has a square inch surface of the floor is 617.5, would that be a good minimum size? I plan on having multiple chews and two wheels, as well as two food bowls, since that is what I've been reading was recommended, but I would like your advice if you're willing, thank you in advance!

@@nyxnightshade8422 It's not recommended to keep any hamster with another hamster even if they are litter mates and even if they are dwarfs. In the wild, all hamsters are solitary animals. So it is unnatural and stressful for them to live in pairs. Even if they get along in the beginning, as they mature, they will be territorial and could fight leading to horrible injuries and even death. It's just not worth taking a chance. My suggestion would be to just get one hamster.

I'm new to Syrian hamsters. How do I know if my hamster is brachycephalic or not? Her snout (?) looks normal, but I'm not entirely sure because she's my first. Just in case, I did my research, she has a huge enclosure, has a healthy variety of appropriate food, and she gets lots of enrichment as well as a large 11 in wheel. Just worried she might be brachy, but I'm not sure 😭

@@nyxnightshade8422 square footage is okay, just remember that it is recommended to have AT LEAST 6 inches of bedding although 12 is preferable. Make sure to add lots of hides and cork bark, the floor of the enclosure needs to be practically covered with stuff for them to run around and climb on. instead of food bowls i would recommend spreading their food across the enclosure so that they have to forage for it, this adds additional enrichment and gives them a more natural feeding style to what they would do in the wild, although you can use the bowls for treats like fresh fruits and veggies. also, hamsters are solitary animals if you want two, they need to be in separate enclosers and not be in contact with each other.

This can be true, but in actuality violence towards animals is only a red flag when it is persistent and severe. I don't mean to diminish what this hamster went through-- it was terrible absolutely, but the kind of violence that is a preface to future abuse is stuff like decapitating the family cat. Children sadly, especially very young ones often don't understand pain or death in others. That's why they do things like pulling apart worms and spiders. I could easily see how a child could think "oh, I don't like how that looks so I'll just cut it off." Regardless its a good example of why hamsters shouldn't be pets for young children without adult supervision.

Why would you get a pet knowing you aren't giving it proper care, and then just let it die? It's really aggravating. I love animals but I HATE customers and I HATE the company I work for that just encourages this behavior.

Don't think I could work in a pet store. Last winter, I had a couple of cats turn up on our 3 season porch. I built a makeshift shelter by taping a couple of large cardboard boxes together and folded the flaps back on one side to make a "door." I cut up an emergency space blanket to line them and got a pet safe heating pad for the bottom. Then, the entire thing was lined and covered with blankets. Got heated dishes and essentially helped them to survive the winter. I would have taken them in if it weren't for the pair of incumbent cats I already had. Took them to the vet, got them vaccinated, etc in preparation for finding homes for them. When one hobbled out with a degloved tail (sustained the night before, somehow) I brought them both in (of course after getting the injured one to the vet) and kept them in a spare room. Well eventually a woman and 2 little girls started to canvas the neighborhood looking for them. The woman claimed "ownership" but clearly wasn't so much as keeping them fed, let alone letting them into the house or taking to the vet. (The town had a population of 158 and a single vet, unless you drove two hours to the closest shelter.) I was so angry. And I felt even worse for the two girls, whose mother couldn't afford to take care of 2 cats but also couldn't say "no" to her kids.

@@raftyfins I called animal control about a woman rehoming rats with SDAV which can be fatal to anyone's mischief who would take them. The whole situation came about because the teenage son didn't want to get food for his snake and their teenage daughter wanted a pet so they decided to get her a male and female rat and breed them. Typical dumbass sh*t. Well....what happened is they did ZERO research and when it came time to feed the snake the daughter took the entire little of babies and released them into the backyard. Well, they didn't separate the males from females by 5 weeks so 2 quickly became 60+ and they had gotten all the babies that were released outside back but one. The rats were sick and she disclosed it at first and then started omitting the fact the rats had SDAV from potential buyers. Even a couple local ratteries were going to help her out until they found out the rats were sick and needed to be euthanized. Well, I ended up getting pulled into the situation and was given her information like address and name etc. I started making calls to animal control and I contacted 3 or 4 in her area and every single animal control said that law enforcement needed to be called so I contacted law enforcement and the officer said she knew that address, it was a rental that didn't allow pets and she was going to check into it and keep her from rehoming or selling sick animals since it wasn't legal. Apparently the gal threw a huge fit over whoever called law enforcement but they took care of it. This is a clear case of animal abuse and law enforcement would more than likely have a chat with the people who chopped this poor little hamsters tail off. 😢

Not just small animals. You should always watch your kids, so they don't hurt themselves, other kids, humans or animals big and small. Kids don't have fully developed brains and motor functions. They may come up with ideas, adults will think insane (most kids will cut off a doll's hair and fully expect it to regrow at least once). Don't get me started on object permanence and lack of empathy (as in inability to see things from a different point of view). And even if they don't hurt anything intentionally or unintentionally with their weird plans, they can still hurt others simply because they aren't always as gentle as they mean to be. I can't count the times where animals were hurt by kids, because the parents were inattentive and the parents always blame the pet or kid. Eyes gauged by a pencil, bites after hits and "haircuts"... So many nicks. I'm willing to bet a child cut it off, maybe because it was dirty or something. I had a worse thought: It may have been a parent trying to clear the area around the anus, like some do with dogs.

Poor baby, I hope she's fine & well! Can't believe someone, even a child, that would cut off an animal's tail. That's not a good sign in children, just hope if one of those kids did do it that they get help so don't end up hurting other animals or even humans down the line.

This absolutely disgusts me. I cannot believe someone would let their pet go through this pain, and not want to deal with them, so they just sell them? And this hamster seemed so sweet too! I hope she is better! Thank you Munchie for giving her the help that she needs.

I appreciate the TW. My best friend is a little Russian dwarf hamster who's at the end of his life and I'm just giving him the best I can in his final days. I watch almost all of your videos, but didn't think I could handle watching it, given what's going on and my emotional state right now. I decided to read the comments instead and feel like I made the right decision in not watching this one. I really just wanted to say you do amazing work and not enough people appreciate and understand these beautiful little creatures. To too many people, they're disposable and seen as more of a toy than a pet. Thank you for all you do and for all those sweet little beings you've saved and given better lives to.

What a sweet, sweet girl! I was tearing up at this. I feel so sad for the trauma and pain she has been through, and to still be so sweet. If parents are going to let their children have pets, they need to teach children the proper care of animals and supervise the children's interaction with the pets. What ever kid did this, they need to get this kid into therapy immediately. This is a huge red flag when children intentionally hurt animals. Telling sign of a serial killer in the making. I'm being totally serious. Her snout does look on the shorter side to me. Will be looking forward to hearing how the vet visit went. So glad she is safe now!!! Thank you for all you do.

It sounds like one of the children cut the the tail (that shows psychopathy and the parents need to get that checked out) and the parents panicked and got rid of her asap. It's a miracle she landed in your hands. So glad she got a second chance, so many abused animals die in the hands of their tormentors.

What an absolute sweetheart that she is so calm, loving, and easy to handle; considering what a horrible, violent trauma she endured. I hope that you reported this to the animal abuse people in the area. Maybe the person did it, becasue they are young and don't know any better; but it is also possible that they did it, becasue they are abusing animals and need to be reported. This shouldn't just be forgotten.

I mean-- imagine what could have happened if you didn't rescue her. As someone who owns hamsters while being at a younger age... it's not that hard to get a bin cage. Also-- just the fact that this hamster's tail was chopped off-- I have no words. I seriously want to throw my laptop knowing these people did such a horrible thing. She probably has some neurological damage from her tail being cut off like that, maybe that's why she's walking funny?
