Pepper does seem to be a common name for hamsters. My dwarf hamster was called Pepper, but we changed it to Pumpkin because she was surrendered for adoption on Hallowe'en. "Surrendered" would be a generous term, because she was actually dumped in a pet shop in a carrier bag... honestly, the way some people treat animals makes me sick! There was so much we didn't know and so much the animals had to deal with because of a lack of information. At least now I won't let anyone I know make the same mistakes we did. The apartment had listed different species that we can’t keep, they missed guinea pigs. I actually found out on the new lease that we just signed that they now welcome all animals. As long as the animal is caged. Unfortunately i have 10 guinea pigs and 2 with special needs and tons of vet bills. So i won’t be able to get any more animals for a while. I do miss owning hamsters though.

I have been working for over a month to take in neglected pets around my city and give them great care. I have so far taken in a rabbit that was neglected and being poorly taken care of. She wasn't getting enough hay and was only really fed pellets. She also didn't have the right size litter box, no chew toys,, and she had a waterbottle. She was never let out of her cage. I took her in and she is so sweet. I am now working to take in a guinea pig that isn't being cared for properly.

Hello! Thank you so much for all the information you give. My son is wanting a Hamster in which I told him he had to earn 50.00 before i would even consider helping him get one. At first I was looking at critter tale cages on Amazon then surprise surprise youtube started recommending hamster cage videos! And I found you! I am so glad!!!! I cant believe all the stuff I would have done wrong if not for you! Thank you!

Thank you for sharing this story especially talking about the cage, i dont have this cage but i have put in a new big wheel for my Ham ham and the top was close to one of his platforms so it made me realise that i needed to move the platform away from the wheel xx I also think some of the blame has to lay with the owner for not doing their own research, but you could argue that asking the employee is thier research, but a quick internet search or opening a hamster book would disprove anything thing that employee said!!

So sad, poor Penelope. 😢 My heart breaks for Hamsters. 😭 Glad she will get a nice home and live her life in a better environment. 👍 My new baby Syrian George is 13 weeks old already and he is already 138 grams, so Penelope is well small for her age. X

Honestly hamsters are more like male mice, some (dwarfs) CAN be housed together, but not recommend, they are protein based, and can be affectionate and smelly.

As a human named Penelope, I feel terrible for this poor little namesake of mine. I also want to mention Crackle, and how he grew at an odd later age in his life. I had a severly stunted little girl named Snickers. She was the most hyper, insane, and terrified hamster who made the biggest, most shocking recovery. She became calm, trusting and cuddly, when she use to scream at me and hiss and kick and bite. Anyway, at over a year, she randomly got bigger. She wasn't full sized but she got almost there. So yeah, i realize stunted hamsters tend to do that.

I live in a country where people generally misinformed about hamsters. I joined a local hamster page and I was just horrified at the living conditions of the hamsters. Small cages (even though they were big cages, they were all small), very little bedding, and some just house several hamsters together. Some of them are breeders but I’m pretty sure they do not care about the genetics, and the hamsters are usually sold off in pairs (male and female).

I got my hamster from Facebook from my moms friend from high school. It was a birthday gift for her 8 year old daughter. She said the hamster was evil and horrible and she hated it. When we got home we noticed he had bald spot from him ripping out his fur!! He is so lovely now! big cage he sits on my lap and falls asleep. We rescued alot of hamsters from online and rescue centres.

This channel makes me feel better after seeing so many sad Craiglist ads and videos of small pets in bad care… I try to avoid them but things pop up now because I was helping someone look for a big enough, used cage and hamster rescues in her area. Now the internet wants to show me hamsters. Sadly they’re rarely in good care…

I am not a hamster owner, but I do have 2 little rats that I 'rescued' from a pet store, the guy next to me wanted to by these 2 rats as live feeders and the pet employees had no problem with it at all. Before he could take these poor babies I quickly jumped in and adopted them. Its so disappointing how naive most pet stores and owners are, especially because there are educational care videos online like yours.

I just saw a Syrian on Craigslist in a critter trail with like no bedding, it’s so sad to know people don’t take good care of such great animals, not only that ad but also one with a small cage, very little bedding, EXTREMELY small wired wheel, and in that cage was two Syrians, I wish I could save every hammy, it’s so sad, there are other ads too and it just makes me so sad

My cute little Celia (hamster) was with a secend hamster buyed to be feed to a snake. But the two little sons of the man, who buyed the snake won't let him feed the hamsters because they liked them. So he gave them away to a collegue of my mom and she gave her to me. Now she has a big cage and all I read in books is good for a hamster. The other hamster has found a home too.

I got both my hamsters the Prevue cage, they seem to love it. But recently one of my hamsters keeps climbing all the way to the top. But usually when she sees me. It seems she wants to get out to walk around. I usually let her when I'm with her. But I also noticed she liked the big green bowl in her cage and eat food from there. Or more like stuff her cheeks and hide her food. She would do the same thing when I would let her out to free roam. I don't know if it's normal. If she's just a climber or if she's doing it to get my attention so I can get her out. She doesn't constantly do it. Only sometimes especially when she sees me.

The nick could be from her doing the same thing the dead hamster did, but she was luckily able to escape. Just a thought, it's unlikely.
