I really enjoyed this video so much! Your chats and laughter great are lots of fun for your viewers. I really hope you get lots of delicious tomatoes from your garden. I have four tomato plants this year! Imagine that! They will give me plenty good tomatoes, I’m hoping! My children don’t like them very much, which is surprising, and our grandsons dong care much for them, either. And I can hardly wait for them to get ripe!

Fascinating watching you pruning your tomato plants in the garden, and also your knowledge of the plants, suckers, etc., I didn’t know about any of that. We learn something new every day!! It must be so rewarding to actually grow your own food, and no pesticides used, it is organic. My Father loved botany, and I’ve inherited his love of plants, and fascination with them, but you and your husband are experts, I didn’t know about the things you have talked about and shown in this video. Fascinating!! 🍅😊

When Matt said the chickens were flying up it reminded me of my Daddy. He always went to bed early because he had to go to work so early in the mornings. We would all be sitting around talking not thinking about going to bed & Daddy would say “well, you fellers can sit up all night if you want to, but I’m “fixing to fly up.” My grandkids wouldn’t have a clue what that meant this day & time. I love listening to you all talk. It’s like I’ve had a visit back home.

Funny thing about a whippoorwill, a couple years back we had a really loud close one or so we thought that's what it was. I kept listening and finally asked my husband where do they get it's saying whippoorwill when clearly it is not. I finally had to look it up because it just didn't make sense to me. That's when I discovered it was a Chuck-Will's-Widow. I'm 50 years old and never knew there were 2 different ones. Do y'all have both as well? We're from SC. Love Murphy, been to Fields of the Wood many times and love the flea market. Enjoy your videos and pray for your family.

My husband was talking about the Chuck Wills Widow the other day. He said they were a little bit bigger bird and made the distinct sound "chuck wills widow", and everyone called them Whippoorwills, and he couldnt understand why they did since they made that unique sound just like the Whippoorwills call out their own name. We havent heard either bird here in our part of Kentucky for quite a few years now.

I buy a big roll of dog wire, welded wire. Cut lengths 6 feet long, twist the cut ends together, and cut two holes out across from one another, one low one higher up. Just really large tomato cages. When plants get about a foot tall, just place over the plant, and I drive a metal stake to the side to keep it from blowing over. They last for years.

You two are the funniest thing to watch sometimes. And you don't want me to talk about my tomatoes, they've all been stolen and one of my plants have some type of mildrew or something... I'm going to have to pull it and burn the plant so it doesn't spread to others... And then dump the dirt out and sterilize the container I have it planted in and start over with that spot...how depressing! And the other crops have been stolen snd are picked dry. So this weekend I will seal up the garden area and replant...talk about depressing! But by August, I should have plenty to eat, but just don't have anything that even resembles food growing anymore. And Matt, splash about a cup of while vinegar into a tepid bath and sit in it and splash that water over your sunburn, it will help ya. Stay safe guys!

Someone send Matt a beekeeper's hat and netting! I'd love to see him sit and do a video wearing one! I use concrete wire and make my own heavy duty tomato cages. They are exceptionally strong. We don't remove suckers, although we've always said that 'this will be the year' that we do. I also let some grow on the ground. My paternal grandfather grew 200 tomato plants on the ground one year and they were giving tomatoes away to anyone who wanted them! I grow Jersey Devil tomatoes, Kanner Hoell (Seed Savers - Decorah), Amish Paste, Delicious (St. Claire Seeds), and various cherry like Principe Borghese, Bumble Bee, Chadwick, and some Pink something-or-another. Plenty of 'yard snacks' that way! I'm in zone 4b.

I have one tomato plant - since it's just me - that's plenty. All this talk about tomatoes reminded me of a prank we pulled on my grandfather, One summer, he had dozens of tomato plants just loaded with green tomatoes, He loved fried green tomatoes but would not have them until he had at least one red one. He moaned about that for days - too impatient for nature to take its course, My mom and I went to the grocery store, bought a basket of tomatoes and stuck them on the plants one night after Pap went to bed,. The next morning Pap checked his garden and couldn't believe the tomatoes ripened that much overnight! We had such a good laugh about it.

Trimming suckers isn’t the only way to focus the plant’s energy. Pinching off blooms from high concentrations of blossoms on less than sturdy stalks helps the plant parse the energy to produce several nice sized ones instead of many smaller ones.

Loved this episode on your tomatoes. If you want more volunteers next year, then take a tomato at the end of the season when your cleaning up the garden and just poke it down into the soil. It will come up as a mass of seedlings in the spring and then you can separate it out into individual plants. Also when one of your of Cherokee Purple gets a sucker, root it and you’ll be able to give Matt more of his favorites. Good to hear you like the Juliette. I have some this year and they are doing great. Unfortunately, I have longer to wait for the results as our growing season here is NH is behind you. I agree with Matt about the messy tomato sandwiches! In the height of the season I have one every day for breakfast. Some nice white bread, mayonnaise and onion salt…HEAVENLY.😇 you guys were so funny today..thanks for making me laugh and realizing that even though we are miles apart, we have so much in common. Sending love and light to you and especially Miss Cindy.

Your tomatoes look wonderful! We never cut the suckers off either. We did always tie them up on stakes or baskets. I can see sitting in a chair and getting tired and sleepy after working all day then working in the garden. Its a wonderful feeling to me. Thanks so much for sharing. Prayers for Miss Cindy!

My tomatoes are doing good because I water them regularly. We have not had rain for Almist 3 weeks here in New Jersey. I always trim off bottom leaves and suckers. I have one that I am rooting. I am using cages as I only have 15 plants. I only have a 1/2 acre lot but still growing peas, onions, potatoes, Swiss chard, yellow squash, zucchini, )6kinds of peppers, cucumbers as I make bread and butter pickles that everyone wants, stringless bush beans., cabbages under netting to keep of the moths. I use the same clips that you use especially on my cukes. Enjoyed your video. You have me eating popsicles too!!!

Staking and tying those huge plants was always all hands on deck!😂 My local farmer’s market has the Cherokee Purples. I just used them in tomato pie a couple of weeks ago and it was so good. Can’t wait to see your harvest!

If you want a good organic fertilizer for your tomatoes and peppers, the next time you go to Menard's get you a 25# bag of "Chicken Poo" fertilizer. You can add it anytime and without having to worry about burning. Menard's is the only big box store that sells it. I got three bags yesterday at $10.99 per bag. I put it around my tomatoes and peppers about every three to four weeks. The NPK is 2-4-3.

Watching Mom's mannerisms - tell me that Corie and Katie don't move just like her - :) My Mom grew tomatoes, cucumbers, mint, and sometimes peppers. She was a natural at gardens and flower growing. She would support her tomatoes with sticks that were part of the bottom of a window shade. (i.e. the stick slid into an opening at the bottom of the widow shade to give support there. She also used long dowel rods. I wish I had paid more attention to her lessons. My daughter says I could kill and artificial plant. 🤣😆

I'm not trying to root them because I don't have room for them. I think my mother-in-law said she removed one, stuck it back in the ground, and it was doing good.

Your lovely garden gives me hope for ours! North Mississippi here and a new place. The land is just red dirt. Hopefully our attempt at amendment and mulching will help in the future! If I crave tomatoes in the winter, even on a salad, I sometimes just buy a can of diced tomatoes and drain them and use them. Surprising how good they are and close to fresh. Much better than those from the produce dept! Our favorite is Cherokee Purple too! And our tomatoes are doing great! Ate our first two last night! And my nasturtiums are doing lovely and bringing me such joy! I planted several colors and sizes! Thank you! My husband just loves Matt's humor! 😜

I'm with Matt on the fried green tomatoes, I could make myself sick on them. I live with one of my son's who doesn't eat tomatoes at all unless it's in a sause of some kind. When he was about six years old he and his older brother went out to the garden and ate a belly full of ripe tomatoes and of course they had salt on them and Danny got sick from all that salt and tomatoes and threw up. Since that day he has never wanted any fresh tomatoes and I have a garden full of them. I have to many variables to name and I forgot some of the names already, I'm old lol. I do the Florida weave on my plants, I don't have any cattle panels. I have cukes on the hortinova trellis and the snap beans that will need picking tomorrow.

Go ahead and try to grow a few more Cherokee purple tomato plants just to see how they will do. That is amazing that Matt could smell the smoke from fires in Canada. We have had a windy late spring too but I love it! That is hilarious about the crazy squirrel! Makes you wonder what happened to it to make it that way. I really have to pay close attention to the sounds before I can hear the katydids as well. Sometimes I haven’t been able to hear them when others did. I live in Louisiana and we have had cooler temps too and it has been so nice. Those temps y’all had in late July back then were crazy! My late husband used to not let me first silly things I said or did too Tipper. All in fun of course.

My daughter Hadley gets bit and tormented terribly by bugs. Her pediatrician told me to take bananas out of her diet in the summer and replace it with lots of grapefruits. Interestingly enough she loves grapefruit. Also foods rich in Thiamine are suppose to help when ingested such as beans, lentils and tomatoes. Fresh onions, garlic and Hot pepper are go to foods that will also help. A few other foods I have heard may help include Apple cider vinegar and lemon grass but I have never tried them personally. Good Luck Matt! Hope this cuts down on them pesky bug attacks for you! It did work somewhat for Hadley.

Tipper you may recall I did an informal 'test' last year with tomatoes. Bought 6, all the same, cultivated for this/our area. I did y'all's approach to 3 and another approach (much, much fussier approach) and w/o a doubt your approach was the winner (LOTS of 🍅). I'm only experienced growing ornamental stuff, not food stuff (wanting to put more emphasis now on the food). Successes/failures have convinced me that 'over mothering' is bad, with almost anything I'm growing. Love y'all and THANK YOU ! 💓 🙌🏼

My husband uses a product on the farm from Avon called Expedition spray that is a sunblock and bug repellent. He swears by it for ticks. Aloe Vera gel is good for a sunburn. As a child I remember my mother putting vinegar on my sunburn as it was suppose to take the fire out but when she put it on me, it set me on fire. I’ve added those Cream and Sausage tomatoes to next years list that I want to try.
