Adding Mulch To The Garden, Bears, & Being a Test Dummy

Matt and I worked hard to add mulch to all our garden areas, we didn't get it all done, but we made great progress!

We used to say, “nothing like a little poverty to make you humble “ and “hard work builds character “. The older I get, the more truth I see in this.

As I have said in the past I'm 72 and growing up on a farm we had to push through or nothing got done ..we all had tasks to complete each day ..our success of providing for the next year depended on it..some how when working as a family together the hole process did build charter this was a way of life and we all are much better off having this kind of experience be part of us...I tried to teach this way of living to my children.. all of them are successful..and love the Lord.

I have bears frequently walk through my yard even in daytime. I've lived here 31 years and it is normal to me. They've never bothered anything but I have respect for them and keep my distance. As Matt said I'm not afraid of them, I'm more afraid of walking through Walmart.

My husband called Apple Fritters, "cow pies". Our daughter was just old enough to go in the donut shop to get one by herself. She can stomping out there, got in the car, slammed the door and said "DAD! They are called Apple Fritters NOT cow pies"!! We laughed so hard and still tease her about that and she is 40 now!!!

We see such beauty and how can we not praise God for His gifts, I mean the subtle detail is just awe-inspiring. Everything there is looking SO GOOD! That's a lot of hard work, we know. THANK YOU Tipper & Matt. Continuing to lift Miss Cindy up in prayer, please tell her for me. 💞 🙌🏼

Talking about tomatoes reminded me that when I was a kid, there was nothing better than going to the garden, getting a warm from the sun tomato, grabbing the Morton salt box from the kitchen, sitting on the porch and eating the mater all the way to the green end. It was wonderful. Love your talks with Matt after a hard day's work. ❤❤

the reason I watch this channel the most is because of the relationship between you and your husband. My husband of 50 years passed in March. I will never stop loving or missing him. You and Matt remind me of me and my husband. My husband would do anything for me. And he would let me decide what and how I wanted to do it. Yet he was the strength of this family but he would stand back and let me think I was. Ha! I knew better. Now I at times feel lost and always lonely. I don't think I have stopped crying. If not for Jesus I would not have nothing at all. My husband and I told each other I love you everyday. I would imagine you and Matt do the same. You come to a place where you just become the same person. It becomes easy even when it is hard. God bless you both and never let a day go by that you do not say I love you.

Here in the high Mtns of Appalachia the Rhododendrons have already bloomed & have shed their blossoms... Fortunately my soil is rich...but unfortunately there are way too many rocks...the creek used to flow here....but the flood in the late nineties caused the creek to be rerouted...There are quite a lot of large rocks too...I still own the creek it's just on the other side of the road. I am thankful to be back home in the Mtns again...

I love to hear stories of your family. The words our kids say wrong becoming part of each family's normal. My youngest and only boy had a really good sense of direction. At age 3 or 4 He would ride along with my Dad, who was a Barber, but on his day off would deliver Barber supplies to other shops all over the area. One day we were driving somewhere and my son announced in the Car, "hey, I re-necker-nize this place!" I was here with Grandpa!

Several years ago I was working in Aspen, Colorado for a couple of weeks. My husband took some days off to go with me. I told him I wanted to see a bear so after work one afternoon we drove around the mountains. It’s was so beautiful, but I didn’t see a bear. We drove back into town and we were driving through neighborhoods looking at houses and right in someone’s driveway were two black bears digging in the trash. I was so pumped to see the bears, but was surprised to see them right in a normal neighborhood like that.

Tell Mr. Matt that there are rough earth snakes (Virginia stratus) and smooth earth snakes( Virginia valeria). My son loved snakes when he was little so we have a collection of books about snakes. We have A Guide To The Snakes Of North Carolina book. We read so much about snakes that people call me to come identify snakes for them. I don’t mind snakes as long as they are non venomous. Mice on the other hand, that is what makes my skin crawl. I told my husband if we get any mice in the house that I’m moving out until he gets rid of them. Knock on wood, we have been in our house for 22 years and never had mice. I am looking forward to your garden tour! Also wanted to let you know I got my cookbook today and I’m so excited to try some recipes. When I finish up my evening chores I m going to sit down and read through it this evening.

Well, all shoes wear out eventually. But the worn-out shoes can also be reused as planters. Put some good soil in them and plant some sturdy plants there, then place the shoe-planters in an interesting place, and they're gonna tell a story of your paths and ways in the past, bringing up memories of the things you've been through in those shoes.

We bought a small wood chipper and all year long we drag branches and sticks from the dead wood of our trees on the property. Come April we feed it to the chipper and we have garden mulch. Which is so much better than having to burn off the yard waste and buy mulch!!! I need a garden your size!

Hi There! The garden looks fantastic! Speaking of tomato and mayonaise sandwiches yum!), have you tried making your own mayonaise? It's easy, if you follow only a couple of simple rules. First, use light oils -- light olive oil (not the heavy peppery extra virgin -- too heavy). Excellent choices are almond oil (a bit expensive but very, very healthy and makes a top notch mayonaise)(also almond oil makes a fantastic moisturizer -- a few drops will do and it absorbs into the skin after a few minutes). Then, there's avocado oil -- for mayonaise, that is. Makes a light green, very earthy, flavorful mayonaise. It is recommended to stay away from canola, soybean and other "common" cooking-type vegetable oils. So, mix one to three egg yolks (some use one or two whole eggs -- experiment), a good teaspoon of Dijon mustard (only Dijon), a tablespoon or two of lemon juice, a pinch of salt. Mix these with a blender stick in pulses. Then, add the oil -- bit by bit -- and pulse longer or dribble the oil in continuously and blend continuously until oil runs out and till mayonaise is light and glistening. Lots of recipes online to give you proportions. You can also use a blender or food processor. I think I've even used my Kitchen Aid mixer -- but a blending stick is easiest. Some try mixing the egg, lemon, mustard, etc., and dropping this mixture into the cup or so of oil and just blend with a stick till light and glistening. Compare a few recipies and experiment. Homemade mayonaise is much tastier, much cheaper, much healthier and you don't have to drive to the grocery store. You can whip up a batch at a moment's notice (less than 6 minutes) for the day or for the week. And there are no additives or preservatives. My personal favorite is almond-oil mayonaise. Then, of course, you can add anything else you want -- herbs, garlic, a pinch of cayenne, grated lemon or orange rind -- whatever suits your fancy. God bless!

We have a funny saying in our family, whop biscuits. Canned biscuits, because you whop them on the countertop to open. We rarely make these because we think it’s so easy to make homemade biscuits.

I would agree. Today, clothes (except some jeans and leather) just aren't built to last through hard labor and rough use.

My daughter called strawberries, sawstreebies when she was two. My girls said so many adorable things as all children do. Your garden looks beautiful. When you work hard it does make you tired. My mother used to call that “a good kind of tired.”
