11:31 According to the author, if Subaru hadn't been summoned to another world, he'd have been told off by Kenichi around the time he would have graduated High School. He'd then be supported to return to society in Kenichi's Workplace. Subaru would then take ~two years to enter university, graduate (though as a loner), become a proper, full-fledged member of society, and while having a certain amount of composure, plus the merits of those essentials, he would honestly be living life as a full-fledged member of society. He'd then cling to a kouhai, who has a heart like Rem's, who finds the fact he's a dolt cute. They would enjoy a normal marriage and live reasonably happily ever after.

The moment that made my tears flow was when Subaru's mom said "Take care" when Subaru saw her the last time in his world. It is properly mentioned in the novel that Subaru was in a bad mood and did not even look at his mom when he left his home for the last time. Couldn't control my tears there, seriously.

Like, I can only imagine the amount of grief and regrets they'd be feeling. I'd imagine they'd be racking themselves over thinking they should've been more forceful or done something different earlier. Idk, I've seen parents of people who've lost kids to suicide and imagine they'd be feeling very similar since that's probably what the prime possibility they'd suspect. Especially with how the last interaction we saw between him and his mom was.

Subaru just straight-up disappeared from his home in Japan, his parents went to the police to search for a missing person. As the weeks go on, Kenichi tries to put up a brave front & stay strong for Naoko, but they're losing hope. :(

The "take care" moment broke me. 'Cause, when I was a teen, I was in a very dark depression and one night I was about to walk out and I was seriously planning my own end. My grandmother stopped me and made me reconsider in that moment. I felt grateful after that, but watching this made it crash home how easy it would have been and how much it could have hurt my loved ones. Feck, I'm crying like a lil bitch writing this.

Due to cuts, season 1 didn't show a few hints of Subaru's parents. When he was transported, he had to force himself to not think about them to not feel sad. The fight against the Wulgarm was longer and more grueling in the novel. During the fight, he cried out for his parents in desperation. In the Crusch negotiation, which was also longer, he used the skills his father taught him. Those are the ones I remember.

**Sees thumbnail** Ok, gonna grab some tissues and a blanket. I am (not) ready. Echidna being a bad therapist score: 1 This episode hits hard every time. It explains a lot of Subaru's behavior, including why the light in his eyes changed in season 1 episode 1 when he realized he would no longer be (a perceived) burden for his parents, that he can start over. It also makes what Subaru said in episode 18 even sadder: "Before I came here... [...] do you have any idea what I did? I did nothing... I've never done a single thing. I had all that time, all that freedom... I could have done anything, but I never did a thing. [...] What I am now is the result!" His parent know him so well. His mother telling him that if he would be more lenient with himself it would be so much better of her. Subaru is the hardest on himself. Rem, Ram, Puck all killed him, Otto tried to kill him, Crush called him a madman, Anastasia manipulated him and despite all that he forgave them, and saved them from their fate, even killing himself for Rem twice. Subaru is the hardest on himself and forgives others.

When I read the novels I couldn’t stop crying. I mostly enjoyed the parts with his dad since it was the main source of his trauma. But now I find more to love in his interaction with his mom cuz it speaks to me. The line “we didn’t have you because we wanted you to do something for us, we had you because we wanted to do something for you” is so amazing. It’s one of those lines in fiction I’ll never forget

There was this little part of his father speech skipped in anime, where he explained to Subaru he's not always that over-the-top guy Subaru used to seeing. He acts like totally normal guy at work and only gets in high gear for his wife and son, so that's why Subaru got a bit wrong father model in his head.

Subaru's past kinda attack me, except for the dropping out of school part. I shut myself in by the time I got out from the army and left jobless. It made me consider how little value I had, it made me see that everyone around me was moving on while I was stagnant despite the high expectations that the younger, more fit to success me, made others have. I was very lucky to get out of that dark spot on my own, because I refused to seek help. So, to an extent, I relate and this episode gets me every single time

i dropped out of college immediately and related to subaru as well. for me tho, personality wise, i was the exact same as subaru. im very desperate and am always upping the ante. his comment about how “making everyone laugh was cooler” really struck a cord with me. i was the exact same, no matter how stupid it made me look, if i can make people laugh it seemed like enough. but thats because i lacked real social skills. obviously, its not enough and even today its a really bad habit of me relying on my humor. it leads me to look annoying to people at times. it’s really crazy how real this was written. im sure a lot of people relate to subaru. i had a lot of expectations on myself, placed on people. and my parents, no matter, treated me the same despite everything. but it felt like they should have forced me to give up or to force me to make a decision i sort of got out of that hole, but like subaru, i constantly relapse into bad habits. its a neverending cycle. when you have trauma, thats how its always gonna be

Once again, we thank you for this amazing reaction and analysis content, and you need not worry about the awkwardness or whatever; moat if not all of us got impacted by this episode more or less the same way, and we're glad you got to experience and appreciate it yourself as we did. The 'fog' is a sort of clue as to the nature of this trial medium; if 'castle of dreams' wasn't enough of a clue, then 'vivid dreaming' should work well enough. Another thing is that this is both a trial and a knowledge/information gathering thing, for Echidna at least. Remember who she is. This ability kind of suits her and her desire in a way that works for no one else. This trial system she has in place has a specific purpose in the grand scheme of things, but that's all that can be said about that. It is also an amazing, albeit unconventional tool for therapy, as long as the person can handle what it entails, which really is about overcoming one's internal problems with their own strength of mind, maturity and mentality. Essentially, failing to overcome the obstacle in the trial is failing the trial; fortunately there are no limits to retrying it, though, that may have adverse consequences on the person if they brute force it. Finally, it is somewhat modulated so the person can handle and overcome the obstacle in the trial if they have the strength to do so - in other words, it's tough but fair, bar some circumstances of which I cannot divulge at this time for spoiler reasons. *Feeling greedy yet?* Lastly, I hope you pay attention to the upcoming OP sequence/scenery for Season 2. It's got plenty of symbolism and foreshadowing in it, and I personally think it is the best representation of Re:Zero in general thus far. As always, we look forward to seeing the next one, and wish you a good time.

My mother always says that when someone leaves the house, they should always say "goodbye" and "Take care" as we do not know if that will be the last time we see each other. I like subaru didnt say goodbye that often in the past because i never saw the need in it, but now i become afraid something will happen to me just if i go outside for a little bit. So the whole deal of not being able to say good guy while they could understand you hit like a train. I find shows that pierce my heart to be rather therapeutic. I don't cry about IRL stuff (except when mom passed) so the only way to drain my emotions is to watch shows that trigger my tears. One Piece has 3 or 4 points where I just open up and cry for a bit almost every time. Violet Evergarden is one massive tear jerker because the MC is a war orphan learning how to emote and function well. A few others.

Just something I'd like to say about the translations I didn't really like. When Beatrice calls Puck 'Bubby' she's actually saying 'nii-chan,' which should be translated as 'older brother'. They probably didn't translate it as that because it isn't that unusual to adress someone older than you as 'nii-chan' even if you aren't related.

A lot of the times I feel panic stricken/anxious... it hits me out of the blue. As I try to ID why I am feeling that way my most common answer is instincts. A danger sense that is helpfully vague but linked to something planned like work. On days I have ignored the feeling and have continued the day are "bad" days worse than normal in some fashion. No not everytime but because it has been some of the time its easier to rationalize listening to the instinct. I require a focus for hope to exist something tangible that I can picture in my mind... what I lack on my anxiety days are things to look forward to or for that are believable to me. So I have had issues in the past where I call in to often. Like many of my problems they sneak up on me. Only my most recent 2 jobs did it ever come up and my most recent was the worst. Do you know of a good way to get rid of work burnout as in being burnt out on working itself? I find it a bit difficult to want to work when it feels like nothing will change other than location and time. The minotiny drives me nuts (things having no finality or end point, things like stolking shelves or unloading trucks... there is always more to be done, and the same stuff moving and being stagnant). But like that's basically every job to some degree. It also does not help that I hate the concept of money... which is required constantly. I was wondering if you knew of a simple exercise to help with these self feeding issues... I do not understand phrases like think positive in these cases, because I see myself as being realistic not negative.

This may be late, but in an interview with the author of Re:Zero, he says that his parents would've set him straight eventually whereas in the Re:Zero world, a bunch of loyal friends and respected figures are the remedy.

And yes, you're one of those who get how much Emilia is suffering from having to confront her past in the Trials. Also, to all who are on Team Emilia vs Team Ream, well, I'm on Team Threesome. Sadly, I don't think Tappei and his publishers will ever go down that road, due to extreme prejudice in Japanese (and our) society.

Despite how remarkably moving and well crafted this episode and the other stuff about the Trials are, it's an OLD trope often used in all sorts of anime that your biggest challenge is either facing your past and coming to terms with it or facing your worst self and coming to terms with it.

And people say George Martin treated his characters badly. At least he killed them rapidly (more or less). Tappei is on a whole new level of psychological torture.

Agreed, he kills Subaru in an agonizing way. But also keeps a touch of realism in his deaths like he doesn't instantly die. He suffers for a while and feels his life slipping until the last moments.

It's worse than that. At least George R. R. Martin's characters are allowed to die eventually. Subaru can't even say "I'd rather die than do that." all that does is get him an "okay, try again."
