I love how simple it is, it is not a tragic story or anything. It is a normal problen of a normal person!

This was a great episode for the laughs, the tears, and background into Subaru’s character. It makes his actions in Season 1 much more understandable. Regarding playing hooky, in Japan, compulsory education is only until the end of middle school. You can elect not to go to high school, though most do, and an entrance exam is required to enter high school. So as a 17 year old, not going to school only hurts Subaru and his family’s concern for his future.

he has ALOT of catching up to do. but we know he is actually good at learning given how he learned to read and write rather quickly in this world.

That's another thing I love about Re:Zero, The main character's backstory isn't just some tragic thing like every anime MCs backstory, it's literally just such a mundane and normal problem, one would even call it pathetic. It's just him not really wanting to go to school because well he just wasn't really interested in anything, no friends, didn't really wanna try at sports or his studies.

I believe there was a mistranslation in subtitles. He said he wanted his parents to give up on him when he started failing at life, but they just treated him the same way as usual. He had yet to understand the depth of parental love. In the novels you can often see that side of Subaru - him blaming himself for every failure and wanting to be punished by his closest people, the ones who get hurt the most. Yet the punishment never comes.

Not so fun fact: You are correct, everything that happened is purely in the trial and did not actually happen in the real world. Everything including his parents, were just recreations based on his memories. In the real world, Subaru's parents are super sad and depressed and have been looking for him to no avail. No one knows what happened to him (since he kinda just got teleported into the re;zero world) If I remember correctly, there were open police investigations and other things of that nature, but no one can find any clues or info on what happened. Edit: I just realized that you addressed this at the very end of the vid, but I'll still leave this here

Yep, I think it's not that hard to come to that conclusion, but it hurts more when the author confirms it
