Yep, I cried... Re:Zero Season 2 Episode 4 Review/Analysis

This episode made me cry. Here's my thoughts on Re:Zero Season 2 Episode 4, or "Re:Zero Episode 29".
Last Episode: • Witch's Tea Party! Re:...
Next Episode: • Emilia's Trauma... Re:...
In this episode, Natsuki Subaru returns to Japan in the trial to face his past. We get to see Subaru's backstory and meet his parents, Kenichi (Subaru's dad) and Naoko (Subaru's mom). This episode provides additional context to Subaru's behavior and personality, and confirms that he has retained all the character development he gained in Season 1. Rem and Emilia even got a bit of screen time too. Subaru overcomes his past self by deciding to go back to school, where he then finds Echidna, the Witch of Greed, waiting for him in a lewd school girl outfit.
So far, this is the best episode of Re:Zero Season 2. It was a perfect adaptation of the light novel source material, and I can only hope White Fox continues to make episodes of such quality.
We also got to see the (amazing) visuals for the ED song, "Memento" by Nonoc, for the first time.

It really touched me when Subaru cried into his father's arms. He really realized then that he had left his family behind for another world. You could tell he had changed since before he was transported to Lugnica. In his flashback with his mother saying "Take care", he ignored her and you could see his eyes were that of one with no aspirations. And then you look at Subaru after his endeavors in the parallel world, and he is filled with purpose.

I'm sorry for your loss, man. This episode in general had a pretty big impact on me too since I could relate to a lot of what Subaru was going through. My father died four years ago, around the same time that I was going through a particularly severe bout of depression. I spent so much of my teen years just going to school, (and, due to a lack of motivation, I wasn't doing very well at all. In fact, on a lot of days I would just find any excuse available to dodge school altogether), coming home, and then shutting myself away in my room until the next morning. What hurt the most about losing my dad was that he was a really big help in coming to realize what I was taking for granted, and he was one of the main reasons I was able to get better over time. I never really got to tell him how grateful I was for him being there for me, and I regretted that for a long time afterward. For the first few months after he passed away, I would see him in my dreams; we would hang out and laugh just like we used to, and in between all of his joking and banter, he seemed to possess a monk-like sense of wisdom and contentment, just as he did in life. When I watched this episode, it brought back a lot of memories and buried emotions from back then. I'm not gonna lie, even though I already read through this part in the web novel, they still managed to make me cry like a little bitch _again._ Smh

When a Subaru left without saying goodbye, and disappeared, his parents were probably very worried and sad to hear about him being gone, as if he had been kidnapped or killed without a trace. They’ll never know, and he didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to them, that makes me real sad. I’m glad he was able to go back and say goodbye. Croncodile That may be your interpretation, and possibly the author’s. However I appeal to death of the author. Once a work is out we as fans can choose to interpret a work however we please. So long as we are not stating that’s how the author interprets his work or that’s what he’s intentionally doing with the scene then it’s fine for us fans to create our own headcanons, and this is mine. Edit: as for echidna. Of course she’d claim that Subaru didn’t meet his family. She’s an asshole.

Due to Re Zero's (And anime in general) demographic, it's likely that a lot of us would relate a lot to Subaru this episode. He might have been obnoxious and frustrating in earlier arcs, but this episode made him absolutely relatable. It felt like it was me in there; my father is an awesome person and even though he only wants for me to be happy, I just can't but compare myself to him at his age. Everyone tells me I'm too hard on myself, and I'm often confused by that because I don't know anyone as lazy and detached as I am. But they're right, they're absolutely right. They see right through me and notice that I've given up only because I think my own expectations are unarchievable. Last year I had a car accident. I was on my own, and just went offroad, luckily. I was fine, but the car was destroyed and I could've died just as easily if I wasn't able to manouver as I did. I was extremely lucky. All I could think of was the cost I meant for my family. I barely worked in my life, have been stuck in college for 6 years, and now this. They should hate me right now, they should be so disappointed by now. I'm just dead weight. But no. When everything settled, my parents threw a party just to celebrate that I was fine. Cheesy, I know. I couldn't wrap my head around it, but now I understand what they mean when they say they love me inconditionally. It took me this long to understand something so simple. That's why I cried watching this episode.

subaru's parents are just so wholesome. i expected them to ne assholes tbh, and i was so relieved to find out it isn't the case. and this episode is yet another piece of evidence that re:zero always finds the right words to say.* i think the best bits about this episode were the bits of his dad and mom talking about how subaru is "half of them" and the contrast between what they say, yet also the similarities. it's comforting to hear, honestly. and also subaru's tragic backstory of experiencing the "gifted child" syndrome i think really hit hard for a lot of people, myself included. i think some of the best lines in this episode were: "if i had to give them away, i'd make them mine, even if i don't deserve them. i'd just make myself worthy of them after." and "we didn't have you because we wanted you to do something for us. we had you because we wanted to do something for you." and the whole bit about subaru's mother (and father too honestly) telling him she's always been watching him and trying her best to help him but not knowing what to do or how to,, that hit hard, too. honestly, this is such a nice episode. well deserved and well timed. nothing much happens in terms of action, but it's the conversation that subaru deserved to have, like in that episode with rem and him just talking. absolutely powerful. *in a previous episode, i loved the line, "you shouldn't assume all her decisions come from someone else."

[Spoiler] I broke down when he tried to tell his father that he wouldn’t be able to support him and Subaru’s mother because he’s in another world. Even though Subaru came out better than he went in, him wanting to make everything up to his parents, and his father telling Subaru that to make up for everything that he should take care of them when they get too old to take care of themselves, it must have felt horrible in that moment to know that he can’t even take care of his elderly parents.

@@dddmemaybe It's not anime, but if you haven't seen Futurama, there's a very similar concept to an episode in that show titled Game of Tones. If you haven't seen it, the basic premise of the main show is a guy gets isekai'd to the future. It's mostly a comedy but has several heartwarming episodes throughout the series. Anyway, the game of Tones episode deals with this fairly similarly, although with a slightly happier ending and much more satisfying closure than this particular episode (I don't want to spoil it for you or anyone reading this).

I totally didn't expect this at all, especially from a dark thriller anime like this. They even make it an almost 30-minute episode! I can't imagine how much work they put in this episode to make something as amazing as this... From the start until the end, they really perfected the scenes, the background, the animations, the character development... and most importantly, the feels 😢 Now I understand why they took so long to release s2, and I'm definitely not complaining!

I fucking cried on this episode so hard. Natsuki's dad and mom really are the best. The thing is Re:zero is the first proper isekai I watched. So, when Natsuki said "Where's my power and cute heroine" and all that shit, I didn't get the gist of it and when I did watch a bunch of ongoing anime at the time, I realized that Re:zero really was not like any other isekai. You'd think that it wasn't taking itself seriously but I don't think that is a correct statement. What it did was innovate. And personally, I have been waiting for Season 2 for so long because I am an anime-only watcher (As far as Re:zero goes) and the delays, the postponed dates of release made me think they wouldn't actually release it, but here it is in all of its glory. This season's best girl percentage for me definitely has to be like this: Rem: 50% (because of course) Echidna: 30% (because the moe-gap is awesome) Emilia: 10% (she's kinda redeeming herself this season ngl) The remaining 10%: To be decided

Going back to this episode almost 2 years from it’s original air date, I have to say that I didn’t think I could love and respect Subaru’s character anymore than I already did (and I can’t believe that only my second time watching this that I almost cried and I never did in the first). Before this episode, I loved Subaru as a character as I saw him as someone to compare to. A protagonist that could survive and overcome the impossible from his luck, smarts and limited powers. A major comparison I gave him was that he had the human limitations and so much as acknowledged and accepted how weak he was, yet here he is doing what he can to save everyone he loves and cares. After seeing this episode, I now even understood more how Subaru learned to understand himself, to see his mistakes and regrets and even understand his parents despite knowing they weren’t really his parents. Point is, I think Natsuki Subaru is one of the best protagonists i’ve seen within the limited isekai anime i’ve watched. He isn’t super strong or powerful in a fantasy world but makes up for it for how flawed of a character he is and just isn’t some protagonist that can easily improve within one chapter and has multiple scenes dedicated to necessary character development. The world clearly doesn’t revolve around him despite him being the make or break of Lugunica’s future. And while he can use his Return By Death to fix his mistakes, he still is a normal human being with human limitations that can’t easily stall out death and can die pretty easily.

If you think about it, seeing this episode really makes the IF stories way more sad, and they hit different. It really feels like Subaru not only betrays himself and everyone else in those paths, but his parents and past life. It's amazing what a little perspective can do. Just that thought and cross-referencing both made me cry. Like, in Wrath IF, imagine if it was Subaru's father or mother that walked into the Pandemonium castle. What would they think of Subaru then, and vice-versa?

The fictional day must have been set before the night he was transported, the hunched over Subaru who left without even acknowledging his mother is not a kid who would wrestle his dad etc.... weirdly when I first watched the show I got an extreme depression /suicide vibe from Subaru and he gets transported to a world where he can’t die... Dear god, everything in this episode is just sentimental and pure. This is one episode that shows that Subaru has been growing up and learning new things everyday ever since he went to Luganica. I really feel bad for his parents though, they just can't get closure as they don't know where he went. Usually in isekai's only the soul is transported. For Subaru's case, his whole body even his belongings are transported. This means there's no predicting what happened to Sabaru in the real world. That thought alone makes me feel great sympathy. This is a very good episode. Also, I have Twitter now.

This Isekai, I mean, what can I say after an episode like this? I've seen many Isekais, most are just saying they're Isekais without real impact on character or plot. most are fantasy wish fulfillment (I'm the 8th son??, old man grandson etc...) , others are a twist on the Isekai genre (i.e - konosuba, Isekai quartet etc...) and other's are a unique way of exploring a character/world (i.e - log horizon, The Saga of Tanya the Evil etc...), but Re-zero punched me hard. after re-watching it all, this episode came like a howling father headbutt to my heart, it's character development that isn't concerned with easy solutions. this is not Subaru trying to get back to his previous life, this is not Subaru having the worst parents and running away from his previous life. this is Subaru, accepting his past mistakes, realizing some things are too late to change. and for someone who can just die and change things, this is a hard lesson to learn. he's now a better person, in a realistic way, which is amazing considering this could have easily been that "this is a trap to make you stay here forever" twist or "your parent's have special powers too" or something of the sorts. any way, here's wounder-wall. #keeponkeepingon #McryingRN
