So about the whole thing about the villagers being held hostage. They were hostages, but at the moment Emilia entered the barrier she can't leave anymore if the barrier isn't broken, so with all those villagers there the food consumption of the santuary got much higher and of course there were conficts between the people of santuary and the villagers, so Garfiel undertood the situation and was cooperative and let the villagers out while Emilia remained there because she can't leave and she remained as a hostage(and a really valuable one).

About the villagers not being allowed to leave... Originally they weren't. Garfiel had them as hostages to make Emilia do the trials. It took days of convincing for Garfiel to let them go. He realized Emilia was already forced to stay and do the trials so there was no point in keeping the villagers there.

The Roswaal sus was foreshadowed a lot more in the novels. For example, just before Subaru went to the royal selection meeting, we had some inner monologue with Rem. Basically, Roswaal told Rem to not interfere with anything that Subaru does, so that's why she let him go with almost no resistance. I knew your arc 4 reactions were going to be incredible. Now you can finally start to see how crazy your predictions were lol

​@@ma.2089 Yeah, there are cut conversations that give more depth to basically all the characters. That's why I always recommend still reading the earlier novels before moving on to arc 5. There are quite a few major cuts in arc 3 as well, but these minor things are rarely talked about.

Wow that makes her attitude significantly less like overwhelmingly blind love to Subaru, it’s weird they cut that.

Honestly one of the best things about re-zero is that I end up loving every single character just because of how complex each one of them is. The world building is amazing and the way the story twists and turns makes it such an amazing experience. Also the one thing I love above everything else is the voice acting. The JP VA actors absolutely knocked it out of the park.

Bro, what the fuck, I know I've said it before but your ability to breakdown a character and their actions and make predictions is insane! Honestly, I cant wait to see your reaction to the later episodes in this season.

Roswaal was only hurt because he doesn't have the qualification to take the trial. Echidna granted Subaru the permission to take the trial the last time he saw her.

Personally I hate re:zero but I rather do enjoy vivy It's interesting to see how the author has grown over the last ten years. On a side note I'd say A Silent Voice is nice, Steins;Gate can definitely be great times....the list goes on. Lot of amazing anime out there that are also psychologically interesting.

If you though the last arcs were rough for Subaru,you're gonna be surprised at how arc 4 raises the bar. As for Roswaal...well I can't wait for you reactions to the later episodes,he's an...interesting one,to put it mildly. Nice catch on the earrings.

I love how this dude keeps foreseeing the future events just from character's words and actions. Like I said many times before, you really need to be at least a little bit smart and emotionally mature to understand ReZero. Ofc it will all be given straight in the end, mostly, but the process of realization is way more satisfying.

I'll just put up a reminder, just in case... This entire affair with Echidna, the Sanctuary, and the 'trials' is that they are that, *trials*. They are *not* intended to be therapeutic or beneficial to trial-takers, though resolving their internal, mental and self-harbored issues through it can be considered a 'side benefit' as a result. You already mentioned 'greed for knowledge' so you pretty much have a clue as to what is the ultimate goal of these trials, for Echidna at least. She even mentions it when she asks Subaru about what he'd like to know about the witches, as she describes herself.

Echidna being a bad therapist counter: 2 Superb reaction my dude. You are right, this is a GREAT episode for asking big questions, but for regular anime watchers it's just a set-up episode. I have a big question for you. Why do you think Echidna, the witch of greed for knowledge, is so nonchalant regarding Subaru being from another world? I don't know, but I have theories and I want to hear you theory on this. Yeah, all contracts are weirdly worded in this anime, it's like everyone is a lawyer in Lugunica. I wouldn't be able to handle my trial of the past. I got past a dark moment in my life because I have friends and family what were very supportive. During those days I would have preferred to die than be where I was. Then when things were starting to look up, that's when someone, a person who I trusted at the time, said some things over the phone. I hung up, got to my feet and before I could stop I was three feet away from the balcony. I backed away and sat myself down thinking I won't die because of this person. Looking back at it I know that if I would have gotten to that balcony and looked down those seven stories bellow, in my numb state I would have just let myself fall over the railing. Months later I was in better shape so I said my goodbyes and cut ties with that person. I don't blame them, they didn't understand what I was going through, they thought I was faking it and making excuses since the "hard" part is behind me and I'm "better" now.

You're gonna love the later episodes

Not that I know to what or which trauma I would be sent to so I can't tell if I would be okay. But, considering my current self, i assume my chances to be 1,25/3 to succeed, 1,25/3 to fail but pretty much okay mentally and 0,5/3 to fail and be mentally devastated.

Garfiel was holding the villagers hostage until someone came along that would do the trials and free the sanctuary - while also not wanting that to happen because he's scared of those he loves dying - and the thing people always forget about in this episode and the action in the following one is the amount of time that's passed. Garf has watched Emilia spend days torturing herself by repeatedly failing the trial and doesn't want that, so he's relying on Subaru here to take the pain away from her and it's a big sign of just how big of a softie Garf is at heart.

My past is pretty tame. I'd be wondering why i'm viewing the past and how the hell the simulation is so detailed if its coming from my memory. Having read The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher if i got transported to Echidna's Windows XP plane i wouldn't be expecting any gifts, packs or bargins from her to begin with so it wouldn't come up to begin with.

That's not confirmed at all, though. Subaru did find out the starts of this world are different from the ones on his world, but it's never implied the re zero world is just a flat earth floating in space somewhere in Subaru's universe, and it'd be really hard for that to happen if we consider Subaru's world works in a very similar way ours does. So, as of now, the nature of re zero's world, and it's connection to Subaru's, is totally unknown.

So if you cannot take the trial, the trial rejects you sorta based off of your mana capacity (at least that’s what I think it is), which is why Roswaal got so beat up.

Thank you for another great reaction! As for a series you can watch/analyse, Fruits Basket comes to mind. It's a shojo, but the characters are well written, and all have their own problems and trauma that they need to overcome. I'm confident that you will be able to foreshadow a bunch of character elements. :)

@@ArlanKels each episode is only 24 minutes they cannot force more content into them and the anime adaption is not bad it didn't change the story it just cut the contents that are not useful in the current arc and they maybe adapted in later arcs. so the anime adaption of this anime is really great

Great psychoanalysis ^_^ I believe others have talked about it, but Roswaal couldn’t take the trial; he is hurt because there is a magical barrier that will basically beat you up if you’re not qualified to take the trials.

End of season 2 spoilers Can arc 4 novel readers tell me if this ever got explained? The part of his commentary about why the sanctuary and trial were made like this made me think, we know the sanctuary and barrier were made to protect the demihumans from hector and other external dangers, so were the trials made so that only someone strong emotionally and capable of protecting the inhabitants of the sanctuary could free it or did it have any other objective? And if so, did Echidna think of anyone in specific to do it like Subaru or Emilia? Graveyard Echidna seemed to actually care about everyone so I think that's plausible, but again, I didn't read arc 4 so I'm just assuming things here, maybe I'll get to it after I finish arc 6

s2 spoilerz The sanctuary wasn't made to protect the demihumans, it was made to protect Echidna from Hector specifically (in the novels that is more clear), the demihumans were the "fuel" for the barrier (as beatrice said to Ryuzu right before she sacrificed herself, the demihumans having a home was just a happy coincidence, not actually Echidna's goal when gathering them). Graveyard Echidna is a little bit more compassionate than tea party Echidna, but not that much, so i'm pretty sure is some other reason, and she doesn't really care about the demihumans.
