In the original timeline, the second tea party where subaru talked with daphne, there was a scene in the web novel that didn't get adapted in the light novel which is the source of the anime. In that scene daphne make subaru understand what is true starvation to change his mind about her philosophy. Subaru starts eating his left hand and would have gone through his arm if not for minerva beating him into health. Just after that echidona appear and express her regret that the discussion didn't yeald any merit. But subaru answer that the discussion wasn't over and ask her to bring daphne back... And that creeped the fuck out of echidona: the guy just went through an horific experience and dismiss it like nothing. Worse, he want to continue the conversasion that led to that experience. Its at that point echidona realise how mentally destroyed subaru really is and that's after a dozen death. In greed we are at hundreds of million

@Ambridge for a lot of people, the webnovel is the true story LN is simply what the anime adapts Most people that know the source material always consider the webnovel to be the truest, most complete version of re:zero

And it's a story that is still kept updated Also why do you try to push anything bad subaru does as a reason for why wn is not cannon? Those two things are completely unrelated That argument sounds like cope on your side Also... Fanfic? In what world is the webnovel considered fanfic? Wn is literally what the LN is based on. Wn cannot be considered fan fiction and hence that argument is also invalid LN in re:zero's case is that its simply a neatly Packaged version of the LN made for the purpose of publishing Since the wn is basically free

Question: Is the anime adapting the web novel or the Light novel? Most anime adapts the LN, and the LN's the revised and edited version of the web novel.

The two things that really got me in Greed If were: 1. Beatrice being one short step from being empty inside after her contract is broken. Not that it’s really surprising because we know how much that contract means to her (and what it took for her to let go of that contract herself in the main story), but seeing her end result is so heartbreaking. 2. Subaru thinks so little of his life that he utilizes RBD just to get a weather forecast for Petra… and Echidna, who at the end of the day really doesn’t care for Subaru beyond sating her greed for knowledge, even tells him to value his life more than that. Emilia doesn’t surprise me much because we saw hints of this kind of reaction with “Yandere Emilia” prior to Subaru getting eaten by the bunnies for the second time, and Reinhard doesn’t surprise me because his is a common theme through these If stories - you don’t break him physically; you break him psychologically… and as long as the plan is well though out it’s really not that hard actually to break him that way.

Thing is, Echidna does have feelings for Subaru, as clearly shown here. Subaru changed so much her own "love" faded away. Echidna's really disconnected from feelings, but she felt something for Subaru (cause of the Natsuki charm, ofc) and that was lost because of her own machinations.

I was waiting for this for so long... Greed IF is my favorite IF story. I don’t know why but Greed Subaru is giving me chills. Greedbaru’s mere existence is nauseating. A being who will not stop even if he dies over 100 million times. Also even if he died everyday and didn’t have any time between his loops he would still be over 273.000 years old at this point at bare minimum. Which we know it would be higher since Subaru compromised a month worth loop in this IF story. He didn’t knew he would be returning to morning which means he done this many times before. Especially in the new LN addition to Greed IF we saw what happened to him and how much he changed. Even one of his opponents who was aware of Subaru had a contract with Echidna, that person also realized the fact Subaru is totally inhumane and His last words before he was killed by Subaru was “I should’ve not only be aware of the witch but you as well, Monster!” There is also a scene where Subaru was being awarded for defeating The Great Rabbit in a room filled with more than 400 guests. He dies while he was being awarded by the said enemy and after that guess what he does. He asks every single guest if they are a sin archbishop or they wanna kill him and then commits suicide after the answer they gave. The point is Greed Subaru has become a eldritch abomination who is still pretending to be a human. He is the most monstrous one out of all IF stories. Even Pride still had humanity in him even after all that carnage he caused.

A cursed existence for sure but it’s not on the same level as Greedbaru solely because his plan of returning back [Natsuki Subaru] by patching the memories together is futile and it’s definitely gonna fail. When that happens it will also break Gluttonybaru. He is not of a monster as Greedbaru because I can see an end for him while an end for Greedbaru is far from sight…

"why must love always fade" is a line that will probably give me chills forever, especially hearing it voice acted

To Echidna, I’m pretty sure love is the same as the satisfaction she gets when learning something new. ”Why must love always fade” is probably her reaction to having seen Return by Death used enough times that she no longer feels it’s enough to fully satisfy her.

one thing ive not seen many people consider is the fact that subaru is doing the trials that means he is gonna be doing the second trial over and over again and its a trial that he sees himself die in every possible way even the deaths that happen later in time from the trial so, the number of times he sees himself die doesnt increase linearly it increases exponentially

Mathematically it's quadratically. His deaths experienced in the trial follows an arithmetic progression. Let K be number of deaths before first trial attempt and n be his nth attempt. Then the number of deaths experienced is Number of real deaths: K + n - 1 + Number of trial experiences of his first K deaths: nK + Number of trial experiences of his new n - 1 deaths: sum(1 to n -1) = n(n-1)/2 It's this last term that makes it quadratic in n.

Interestingly, Echidna is doing a good bit of lying in this story. First off the talk about Beatrice continues the implication of “That Person” being an actual person Beatrice is waiting for and not the truth that she’s supposed to choose. Second is about Rem’s condition - each option is possible, but it makes me wonder if Roswaal or things Subaru has been doing has tipped off Lye to go into hiding, and while there was some cut discussion about the Sage in Arc 4, I’m imagining that’s gonna be brought up more significantly when we get to later Arc’s so it might be considered Spoilers… but let’s just say that how do we know the Sage wouldn’t work with Subaru? Which leads to Echidna pushing for Subaru to get the Dragon’s blood. Which leads into another point - Roswaal wants to kill the Dragon for some purpose… which since he’s being manipulated by Echidna, could have something to do with the Dragon’s Blood. Emilia’s incentive in being in the Royal Selection is to save Elior Forest which gives some implications she might want the Dragon’s Blood for that, and now Echidna is disregarding to other fairly viable options and possibly even making them non-options to get him to get the Dragon’s Blood which leads me to the question - Why does Echidna want the Dragon’s Blood? She keeps leading those she’s manipulating towards it which makes me think she wants it for some reason.

there is a theory that roswaal wants to kill the dragon and obtain its blood to fully and truly revive echidna with her true personality (its been hinted at that the trial echidna persona isnt the true echidna ( just a creation with some part of her ) of course maybe its the other way around

@@adonaimelles2317 but yes that’s also something I’ve pointed out, but what I think it’s essentially a manifested Greed Witch Factor taking the appearance and some parts of Echidna’s personality. (Not that the full factor is there but certainly remnants of it at least, because the trial does need The Tome of Wisdom to recreate aspects of the Trial.)

Can Echidna be considered as a superhuman?

Just because we wear masks in public, doesn't mean that without the mask we're vulnerable, nor does it mean said masks are not who we are.

This is a great analysis, but on the production side i thought i would point out that the subaru (not sure about echidna) voice actor is the actual official dub voice actor, pretty cool stuff

The thing that makes Emilia’s and Subaru’s dynamic work in the main story after sanctuary, is the fact that Subaru’s weirdness is a facade, and that he’s almost as unready for a serious relationship as Emilia herself.

The contract looks too profitable without real pitfalls. He can borrow her wisdom, use her as psychological support and is not obliged to pay anything in return.

Oh he does give a lot in return. His mind is broken, he’s actually more isolated from everyone else than ever before and even his thoughts are being invaded by Echidna. Otto flat out left the faction and ended his friendship with Subaru, Emilia is almost completely broken, Garfiel is also broken and not friendly really, and on top of all of this Echidna is subtly manipulating Subaru to her ends. She flat out lied to Subaru in the discussion about Beatrice and all of the options to fix Rem are more viable than she claimed. She’s spoon feeding Subaru information to subtly lead towards her own goals, which is likely to cause problems for Subaru in that timeline. Basically look at it more as Subaru will never be able to have a thought to himself, which can get especially hard when Emilia becomes ruler and he wants to be with her, since he’ll constantly have that voice in his head belittling her, and he’s essentially been made into Echidna’s pawn for her actual goals, just like Roswaal, Beatrice and many others have.

​@@Megamanlanprime none of this is a side or direct effect of the contract, it is all due to Subaru's own mentality. He would end up the same even without Echidna. He was already on that path in the main route. But in the main route Echidna was the one who made him diverge from that path, and here in Kasaneru she didn't do it. She didn't lie in a topic about Beatrice. There is a certain person, but Beako is free to choose anyone. There was a leeway in her, erm, "contract" in case a certain someone(guess who) wouldn't appear. Once again you are wrong. What she said about the sage is absolutely correct. She said literally the following : "will you find a sage you will be disappointed by him and won't find an answer, so it will be a waste of time and efforts". So I shall ask : where is she wrong exactly? As for Gluttony... Listen, she was actually the one who proposed this option, it is not like she said "no, don't waste your time trying to find sin archbishops, it is useless", she never said it and never tried to prevent Subaru from chasing after them. And so, Subaru did try to find them for the last 2 years, even if it wasn't successful. He even had Elsa, who literally came back from her mission of finding Ley with empty hands, what are you talking about? Echidna did her job as an adviser perfectly here. Proposed options, told which has the most chances for success, etc. With not a single lie in her words. He made his choice, he decided what he will pay for the things he tries to achieve, and cuddling with Emilia in a bed wasn't a prominent thought/goal in his head. Also Echidna being in his head would be the least of his worries. His dead insidness, his indifference would be the main issue. He simply wouldn't want any of the things you mentioned. He already doesn't and that's the result of HIS mentality, that has nothing to do with Echidna. Oh yeah, forgot to say, there is no issue with Echidna monitoring his head and invading his mind. Just take a crystal off your neck and that's it. But he doesn't, think about it. Everything else is a baseless conjecture. Maybe Echidna has her own plans, maybe she doesn't, but it doesn't matter since their goals in this case are totally aligned, it is not like Subaru don't want to make Emilia a ruler, that's literally one of his own main objective that he formed in his head in the prior arcs. And in the end Subaru has a complete freedom of choice and never did a single thing that was forced upon him by Echidna. He is not obliged to follow Echidna's instruction, he is not obliged to listen to her 24/7, he is not obliged to die in order to "entertain/satisfy" her. He is not obliged to do ANYTHING.

@@LxDization actually no, Subaru if not manipulated by Echidna would not have heading in the same direction as he went. And really if Subaru didn’t have Echidna’s influence or manipulations he would have ended up in quite a different place. You seem to miss the point that both are indirect lies - Echidna explicitly talks about “That Person” as if it was actually someone that would come and save Beatrice, not someone she’d have to choose. Because of that Subaru acted very differently than in the main timeline, and still acts differently to Beatrice. As for the other options, I can’t say much because of later spoilers, but it’s pretty fair to say that Echidna’s machinations either with Subaru (or some stuff with Roswaal) is the most likely reason why Gluttony is not around. The Comment about the Sage goes into spoilers, but the easiest explanation that doesn’t spoil anything is that Subaru probably could get the help from Sage if he wanted to. Echidna is manipulating him to treat it as not an option. Also both Kasanru and the Alternate Novel really puts into place how much Subaru’s current mental state is pretty much Echidna’s doing. And on top of that, yes things such as never having a private thought again is directly referenced to in both - he can’t hide anything from Echidna but she can easily hide stuff from him. She’s very much not doing this for Subaru’s benefit but for her own. Her full speech in the Tea Party even explains it - yes she won’t intentionally make Subaru use RbD, but that doesn’t mean she wouldn’t give him some information that might be not completely accurate just to see what happens. Something like discussing “That Person” to Subaru as if she knows who it is, or subtly leading him away from more viable options, etc. It’s very clear the more you learn about Echidna that her manipulation is made to be extremely subtle - she’s a master at making you think her thoughts are yours and manipulating facts to her own ends. Also you have think about the “Psychological support” she gives might save his mind from breaking on occasion, but it comes at the cost of Subaru becoming her pawn. He thinks he’s doing what he wants but if you know anything about some of the later parts of Re:Zero, it’s clear how manipulative and leading Echidna is which starts questioning, why? She is very much doing what she told Subaru - she’s using him for her own ends and it’s not just knowing about RbD, and death and such. She has much loftier goals and has been manipulating Subaru towards them.

Telling you to make sure Emilia doesn't do the trials and do it yourself by using RBD to solve it won't be helping Emilia..... Why you think Emilia solely relies on Subaru now? She obviously could not possibly have done those trials without Puck leaving her and Subaru believing in her that she can, which he didn't because that's not what Subaru chose to do. Making her ruler by forcing others to submit like he did with Felt all meanwhile making sure Emilia doesn't do anything but sit back and have Subaru do it, which is exactly what Subaru agreed to do to Emilia. Literally called taking other people autonomy away and Subaru just gave his own autonomy away to Echidna. But perhaps you do not understand what autonomy actually is.
