    Hey Dennis thanks for this video my spinfisher is about 15 years old and I have never serviced any real before. I didn't even know if I could do it but after watching your video I just did and it works great. I'm stuck in the house because of the Corona virus. so I bought a cleaning kit and I'm going to try to fix my other reels that were my wife's father's. some good old Penn reels and an old Shimano Calcutta. watching your videos I think I could do it thanks.

    Thank you. I have put all my Chinese Penns back in the boxes and have gobbled up some 700 series greenies on Ebay for my go to saltwater reels. That ssm gearing was the last of the good gearing that Penn offered.

    Excellent video Dennis...enjoyable and relaxing to watch. I have 2 USA built 4400ss...haven’t used them for almost 20 years since purchasing. What are your thoughts on the build and purpose and would I find a similar build to your current video? My hopes would be a light saltwater use.

    Enjoyed the video very much. I have a 650SSM. What would make the anti reverse not engage all the time and feel like it skips as well?

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    That reel uses an anti-reverse clutch, so it is most likely dirt in the bearing or the sleeve that it engages with that is causing it to skip or not hold - Sounds like it needs to be cleaned - Dennis

    Hi Dennis, I've tried to service my old penn 950ssm like in the video but when I put it back together the gears were not meshing properly. I'm pretty sure its the main gear and the gear that goes parallel to the shaft. Any idea on what could cause this and how to fix it? Thanks for the informative video.

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    Жыл бұрын

    Those would be the two gears that need to mesh, but you should also check the back of the main gear where it meshes with the oscillation gear. You do not say exactly the problem. Is the case closing and you have gear noise? Check the shim washers on the handle side to make sure they are installed correctly. Is it that you cannot get the case closed? Check the oscillation gear and back of the main. Check how the main seats in the bearing. Do you have the version with the screw that goes in the non-handle side bearing into the main gear? Check to see that is installed properly - Dennis

    @@2ndChanceTackle Hi I'm back! Thanks for the help, with much fiddling over many spare days it has been fixed. I still don't know what was wrong with it but the original problem was that there was gear noise and vibrations when cranking. It runs smoother now but not perfect, which is good enough for now. Thanks again for replying to all these comments and helping people even on a 3 year old video.

    Try a shot of penetrating oil on the spring side of the bail before you do anything. That will free up a dirty or stuck bail. If that is not the fix, it is likely the bail wire is bent. Watch this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/mIB8o5KuhLuuerQ.html it may help with the next step

    Can someone with a lot of rod/reel knowledge give me advice? I’m setting up a rig for tarpon, cobia, bull redfish, and sharks. It’s got to be cheap, last, and be a spinning set up. After doing research I decided on a Penn 850ssm, Penn allegiance II heavy, fast action 1 piece 7ft rod, 65lb braided with 80lb mono liter, and some large swim baits. Total cost is 230$ shipped. Are there better options for the money? Will the penn 850ssm hold up to those bigger fish? Is heavy action enough or should I get the extra heavy rod? Thank you to anyone that replies.

    Wish I had one of these. Does Pennstill make the 704Z and the 706Z in ‘Pennsylvania? I know they started making them again in 2013. I have both of those that I got back in the late 70s. Super video.

    That is a good question. I don't know if they still make anything in Philadelphia. I will need to look into it. Penn got consolidated into Pure Fishing and moved most production to China around 2005.I think their headquarters is South Carolina with another location in Spirit Lake, Iowa. I do not see Philadelphia in their contact information. My guess would be that the newly released retro Spinfisher are also made in China.

    @@2ndChanceTackle it is a shame that Penn had to do that. I have a Penn 104 in addition to the Zs and greenies but nothing more modern than that.

    Penn didn't give up the US manufacture until 2005, but quality definitely slipped as they were sold and resold a few times. Some of their 1990 reels just used the name and were downright awful - I'm thinking of the Powergraph and Roddy by Penn as examples when they were owned by Master. I think they have righted the ship under Pure fishing and are starting to innovate again as opposed to milking the brand name. I plan on doing a company history at some point. That 104 was made in Japan in the 1970's. Nice, but the Daiwa 4000C, a competitor at the time, was the better reel in my opinion - Dennis
