STOP! You are wrong.

You know if I wanted a more modern reel I might consider this one or the VI version. Always liked Penn reels but still enjoy my Z reels and greenies so much it’s hard to consider any of the newer Chinese manufactured Penns. Not a judgement but rather a preference. Love this video and your other diagnostic videos. You’ve helped me out of quite a few dilemmas in the past. In talking about reel grease, I have so many old Mitchell reels I have switched back to a synthetic grease I used years ago simply called Super Lube. It seems to really work well and because it is a translucent white color you can easily see where the dirt and particulates are inside the case. A friend of mine who is a Mitchell expert that has worked on them for nearly 50 years convinced me to go back to that grease. I honestly think my Penn grease had just gotten too old and had turned a darker blue than it should have been. I still use the Penn Precision but I added the Super Lube particularly for my vintage Mitchell reels (16 of them now). You take care and stay well. I had surgery for more kidney stones yesterday so I’m pretty much miserable today.

Dennis, the timing of this video couldn't be any better. I've been considering buying an SSV6500BLS for the past week. This video gave me an indication of how big the reel is, not too big/not too small. Based on what your video showed, all my questions and concerns have been answered and I have decided to pull the trigger and order one. Thanks.

I think you will like the reel. It can be used for just about anything including saltwater, BIG Catfish.and paddlefish snagging. It is a perfect size for any of those - Enjoy - Dennis. PS, you should be able to get the Spinfisher V on sale for about 25% off as the Spinfisher VI was just released. You may want to check the internet for clearance. They won't last long - Dennis

hi dennis again, fantastic video. guess what? i just pulled this reel connected to a nice rod out of the water, complete with braid! its in usable condition and looks like its only been in the water (SF bay) for a few days. im now taking it completely apart and trying to bring it back to life. it was surprisingly good. great to have this video to help me along. muchisimas gracias!

That is awesome! What a great catch. If you haven't started yet, put the reel in a bucket and fill with fresh water. Let it sit overnight, dump the water, rinse and repeat one more time. You will be surprised how much micro sand and dirt will filter out. It will assure you of a deep clean and save you time in the end. Best wishes - Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle thanks for the reply, and again i say with respect, you have great videos! yes thats exactly what i did. i wasnt sure how to approach it but i know some chemistry and thought that pulling out the salt water was the priority. i soaked in repeatedly in fresh water and shook things around. it made for some pretty dirty water. the reel turned fine even at that point so i was able to move the mechanism just fine. the blue penn grease had turned an opaque skyblue color where it had been soaked in saltwater actually. it was interesting. i wonder if that is an intentional design for their grease? i also want to pass along a tip. i discovered that the anti reverse bearing can slide apart. but i didnt take it apart completely as i think it might never get back together, but i did slide the inner nylon keeper and the roller part down out of the outer race about halfway which opened it up a lot. WD40 in there flushed out all the little dirt. i then pushed it back in and it performs just great.

That little play would indicate wear, but nothing is needed to be replaced at the morning. Things like the bearings and the gears wear over time and the reel gets loose as a result. Most of the drive train would need to me repacked in order to tighten it up, so it is best to just accept the free play. Dennis

If you recently purchased this reel new, then send it back to Penn. It should be covered under warranty, or return it to the store. If it was purchased used, then you don't have many options other than replacing the drive chain - Dennis

Great video I’ve owned my Spinfisher V4500 now for 6 years and it has yet to disappoint me. I use it as a surf reel it’s taken waves, been dunked, etc. I clean it bare every winter (lucky my dads a dentist the ultrasonic is awesome) and grease it and oil it before the first trip out. I do use CorrosionX spray after each trip just a light coating on a towel and rub it down, I think it helps but who knows!

@@2ndChanceTackle did more surf fishing this year than ever as I had a lower unit on one of my outboards go bad ($$$) and the V4500 is just a tank. Caught big bull red drum in NC in windy, rough water for a week on top of NE striped bass. Took it apart a couple days ago and it was somehow pretty clean. One thing I'll say that I recommend every couple seasons is to take the oscillation gear off under the crosswind block and clean under it. I've found that is an area junk likes to find it's way into.

I had this exact problem in two of my Penn Battle 2’s only the main gears were out of round. Never seen that before in a reel.

I have seen a lot of warped gears over time. This is a very common failure in the low end reels that are made of lesser materials. Like you, I don't expect tat kind of thing in the higher end ones. Thanks for sharing your comment - Dennis

Hi Dennis, et al, I have a Peen Spinfisher 7500, just purchased, got it home, went to rig it up, and the bail would not flip shut! So, I loosened the bail screws and added some oil, thinking it might be the issue, no luck. then i inadvertently unscrewed a bit too far the screw that closes the little compartment housing the spring that triggers the bail - and the spring sprung out! Yikes! I fussed with it till i got the spring back in, and in a position i thought was correct, got the lid of the compartment back on with the little nib in where i thought is should go, but now the bail does not close, and only goes 1/2 way to closure. So, i have a new reel with issues, that i have messed with, and Penn may say i voided the warranty because i messed with it. Can you give me some input on how to get the spring properly positioned so this thing functions as it should? I really do not want to ship it back to Penn, visit a service center, or have a replacement - all taking too long. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide! Keep spinning those grins... Tom

Wonderful video explaining how to fix a bad noisy reel and thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. I have a doubt regarding one of my Shimanos basic reel. If you can guess the issue it would be wonderful. When I tighten the rotor retaining nut of the reel, the reel itself get very tight to crank. so I have to keep the nut very loose and when loosen it spins very good. Do you have any Idea behind this reason?

Please pull the schematic for the reel. I believe it will be available at Mikesreelrepair.com under reel schematics then Shimano. Sort the list a to z and find your reel. My first guess is the you have a missing shim washer or Ferrell that sits between the rotor and the bearing. If that is missing, it could cause the problem you are describing. It the rotor sits directly on top of the bearing or anti reverse assembly, the part cannot spin free. Use the schematic to make sure you have all of the parts and that they are in the correct order. That is a quiet reel and there really isn't the old clicker set up that you are looking for. The condition you describe is normal - Dennis

Dennis! I have a spinfisher 4500 and 6500. I've never had spinning reels (baitcast guy)...but when travelling in hawaii i find it more appropriate for south pacific style of fishing..anyways....i've rarely had the bail "flip" automatically on it's own when i turn the handle...many times I have to manually flip it....is this normal? thank you!

It depends on the design. I believe your SpinFisher V is the same as the SpinFisher VI. They have manual bails that do not trip when you turn the handle on the 6500 and above versions. The older SpinFisher reels have the bail trip when turning the handle - Dennis

I don't have a video on that one. The problem is likely caused by a broken or damaged part. Possibly a spring. You would need to take the reel apart to determine the cause - Dennis

Would you recommend use de-greaser or just wipe the parts with paper towel when removing old grease? Thank you.

I have a problem with the main gear of the Spinfisher V6500. spare parts are hard to find in my place. are there other main gears that can be used to replace it? Main gear from other PENN models?

I only have a live liner video for the Penn Slammer and it is not the same set up as your Spinfisher (Thank God!). The Slammer set up is by far the worst spring configuration I have ever seen in a bait feeder reel. Hi Dennis. I was hoping to help me out. I have Spinfisher V6500 , I use it mainly for vertical jigging. I have loaded it with 80 lb braid. The reel is very smooth and does make any kind of noise , if you spin without applying pressure on it. However, while jigging the line retrieval is very stiff. I think when you put pressure on the reel , it becomes vert stiff. Knowing that I have serviced the reel . Is it a common problem. Awaiting your response. Many thanks.

How long have you had the braid on the reel? If it is over 1 year it may be compacted and causing your issue by creating tension on the spool. There will always be strain on the spool, but if it is hard to turn at a certain point of the stroke, like when it is at the top fully extended, then it may also be a bent axle shaft or a weak pinion bearing. Hard to say without seeing the reel. Dennis

My spool is no longer moving up and down, so the line does not distribute evenly . Is this an easy fix ? What is my problem ?

The two components that make the spool go up and down are the crosswind gear and the crosswind block. Either there are teeth missing in the crosswind gear or the is a broken crosswind block. You need to remove the side plate to determine which is the cause of the problem. Replacement parts can be ordered through Mysticparts.com Regards - Dennis

The reels are basically the same. The Spinfisher VI is the latest version in the series. They claim it is more watertight than the Spinfisher V, which it replaced. Both have great reputations and I don't think there is that much difference, unless you are wading chest deep in the surf and dunking the reel a lot. What size fish are you jigging? Fish in the 10 pound or less class would match to the 5500 series. The 6500 takes you to the 15 pound and under and the 7500 is for ones bigger that that. The 5500 and 6500 have the same gears and max drag. The difference is in spool capacity. The 7500 has a lower retrieve ratio, more line capacity and more max drag (30 pounds vs. 25). My reel of choice of the 3 is the 6500, because it is more versatile than the others. - Dennis

These were made in the USA. You can usually find the stamping on the bottom of the reel foot. Penn did not move production to China until 2005-06, so reels, including this one, made before then, were made in the USA - Thanks for asking - Dennis

I don’t think so but to each their own. The VI has gotten great reviews but I also have had my V4500 for 6 years as a surf reel and it’s great. Buy a Slammer III if you want an upgrade.

Wow - that is a matter of opinion - right? The Spinfisher V is a great reel. I have not seen the VI in action yet so the time test is not there. The only changes I see are touting the CNC cut gears and improved seals. If you want the Spinfisher V series, Penn is currently selling the older version at 50% off with free shipping on their website - Pennfishing.com

The Crosswind Oscillation gear is grinding when i rotate in my reel and the teeth are damaged. Replacing the Oscillation gear will resolve the issue? Please help.

If your oscillation gear is damages and missing teeth, then the main gear, which drives it is likely damaged as well and if teeth were floating around in the reel, it may also have damaged the pinion gear. At a minimum, you need to consider replacing the oscillation gear and the main gear and possibly the pinion gear. In addition, you need to do a deep cleaning of the internals to make sure that no broken teeth remain inside the case - Dennis

I still feel grinding when i rotate the oscillation gear. any idea what can be done? Do i need to add shim anywhere?

A fish that size with the 7500 or any other spinning reel is going to be a challenge. The reel itself is capable, but spinning reels are generally not enough to comfortably handle those big fish. That's why most folks go with heavy poles and conventional reels - Thanks for asking - Dennis

Check to make sure the main gear shims are installed. Those shims take out free play in the side to side movement of the main. If there is too much play you could get a grind - Something worth checking against the schematic - Dennis

How do I reset the bail

I think you are asking on the bail spring reset. There are two parts to the bail spring that is under the cover on the line roller side of the the rotor assembly. T He two parts are the spring and a pivot arm. If you have a question as to what these look like, get the schematic from the mystic parts.com website. It's free. To load the spring and pivot arm place the point end of the pivot inside the spring and the open end of the spring on the bottom of the cavity. Next, take the bail wire off of the bail arm. Be careful, there are washers and bearings inside. Note how the parts came out for reassembly. If you didn't do that, use the schematic. Once you have the bail arm separated, align the stud on the pivot arm with corresponding hole inside the plastic bail arm. Orient the bail arm to the stud on the rotor that holds it and press down on the arm/spring assembly until the hole in the arm sits on the stud, then put the screw in and test. It should work now so reinstall the bail wire, bearings and washers and the side plate cap and test it.. This is not easy for me to describe, but I think this will be the answer. I don't have one of these in the shop, or I would have done a video. I hope this helps - Dennis

Too little, too late but you neglected to lubricate the gear box gasket when you closed it up! May end up being a contributor to gear box leakage in the future, however unlikely.

Spinning reels used in the surf are disposable. You use them for a season then throw them in the garbage. Even $300 are disposable.
