    Well Dennis, you never cease to surprise! You found a nice 850ss for me so that my set is complete. The reel operates perfectly and has very little if any cosmetic issues - a truly magnificent reel that I will treasure. It was loaded with fairly fresh grease so I had quite the cleaning job to do. One result of all that grease was that all the gears and internal parts were in absolutely pristine condition. After it was cleaned the internal parts in the housing all looked brand new. You can believe this one will be used and not just sit in a collection. I can’t believe I waited so long to get some of these Penn SS reels. They are very close to being the perfect surf spinning reel. I can never thank you enough! - Chris

    Thanks very much for this video. I have the exact reel in the video and bought it brand new too long ago to remember, at least 30 years ago, before a wife and kids. Reel sat for a long time unused and I've never done a thing to it until now. Some grease inside had gotten hard but soaking in some lacquer thinner softened it enough to be able to remove it. All the gears and internal parts were perfect after some cleaning. I think it's good for another 30 years although I'll do some maintenance on it more often. Thanks again.

    Dennis I now have eight of the Penn Z reels and three of these SS reels. This is the only SS reel I’d ever want to get beyond my 550ss, 650ss, and 750ss. I think the 750ss is as big as I will ever need. I searched and this 850ss was the largest in this series. I have fallen in love with these reels after fishing with my 550ss. They are great surf reels. ‘Scene of the grime?” - that was a good one! I agree with you about the gears in these reels. No one makes them like this anymore. When my 750ss came in I had to do a little work on the dog for the AR clicker but it was mostly just stuck. A friend made me that felt washer for the handle side bearing. It was missing on my 650ss.

    Yes - this is a BIG reel. Probably too big for the surf and more suitable as alternative to the trolling reels used on a boat. You are right - the 750 is best sized for what you are doing. Glad to hear you are giving these reels 2nd Chance! Dennis

    Dennis, thanks for all your videos. You didn’t spend any time looking at or re-lubing the anti-reverse lever and shaft. Mine was a victim of salt - Galvanic corrosion between the body and the shaft ….locking it up solid. Bale-arm spring lost its mojo too… Have you seen those issues ?

    Beautiful reel! I don’t have any of the Penns that came after the Z Series. I have 4 of the Z reels, 5 different large 700 and 704 Greenies, and 2 of the Silver Series - 104 and 105. Maybe someday I’ll get one of these. I am amazed at how these SS reels hold their value and are still sought after by surf fisherman. I was recently working on a large gold colored Shakespeare 2741 surf reel made back in the 70s that had reverse threading on the roller nut. I ended up wrapping the foot and putting the reel in a vise. I had to use both hands on my largest ratchet to finally get that thing loose. I think I pulled my shoulder badly. No penetrating oil or even PB Blaster helped. Someone had tightened that nut beyond any I had ever encountered. Turned out to be a very nice surf reel though. Oh, I just got another Mitchell 396 bailed reel to go with my PUM one. It is going to be very nice since I already have a NOS gray spool for it. Loved this video as these are really fine reels! Thanks Dennis.

    @@2ndChanceTackle Great buy. I love my 496. It is one of the best performing as well as most beautiful reels I own! The seller of the 396 I just bought said he thought the spool on it had been repainted. I think that’s why it did not cost as much as others. I intend to change the spool to one I already had so that did not matter to me. I’ll send you a photo when I get it finished.

    Hey Dennis. Just finished doing a complete teardown and reassemble on one of these. Refe4ed to your video when I had trouble getting the hex fitting back into the anti reverse gear. Everything went back together fine. Reel works smoothly with no catches except it requires a little bit more effort to turn. I'm at a loss. Only thing I can think of is one of the bearings but I oiled them and think I turned them before I put them back in. Could it be too much grease somewhere?

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    Here are some of the things I would try. because that tension is usually caused by an mis-install or alignment in the rotor or main gear area. If you want to check to make sure you have the rotor mounted correctly, remover the A/R disk and install the rotor back on the reel. If the condition goes away, you still do not have that part installed correctly. If the condition did not go away, check the sequence of the parts you installed and make sure that the main bearing on the pinion gear is sitting flush to the case. Here is the link to the schematic to double check your work www.mysticparts.com/Assets/images/pennparts/schematics/850ss.pdf Of course, this assumes that everything was working OK before you started the service. If it wasn't, then you would want to check the axle shaft to make sure it is sliding easily through the pinion gear. A bent axle shaft would cause the same kind of issue that you are describing - Hope that helps - Dennis

  • @wadebowman-gw4uy

    Thanks. Should have known that A/R disc might be the problem. I had a heck of a time getting the rotor back on correctly. Thought I did. Maybe I didn't. The reel worked fine before. I'll check both of these things. You've assisted me with a bunch of Anu Garcia casting reels, 3 Mag Power reels and 2 other Spinfishers. I'll finish the 850 and then move on to the Shimanos. Thanks again.

    hi dennis why does the penn diagram on mystic parts shows the octagon metal drag washer in before teflon dragwasher

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    2 жыл бұрын

    That's the factory diagram and it is correct. The metal hex is the first one in and then you alternate between fabric or teflon and metal washers to complete the stack. If yours is different, then it has been rearranged over time - Dennis

    I heard these main gears are actually naval bronze, not brass. They are amazing and last forever even in saltwater. Brass would have too much zinc and would not last as long.

    Hi Dennis. Do you have to do anything special to move the handle to the other side?

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes - you need the a different hand pivot with the reverse screw. The reel original came with both. You can still order them at mystic parts.com. You need to take the threaded pivot off of the original handle and replace it with the other. It is explained in the reel manual, which you can also see on the Mysticparts site. • @2ndChanceTackle

    Easy fix usually. The bail wire is likely to be bent down. Probably from hitting a boat or pier railing or maybe getting stepped on. Simply bend the bail upwards and that will cause the wire to clear the handle and not hit it any longer - Dennis
