    Thank you for making these videos. I was gifted a Penn 750ss that very difficult to crank. I decided to take apart to see if I could salvage it, using your video as a reference. All that I found was the grease had solidified. I had to run a micro screwdriver through every tooth of every gear, then scrubing them with a toothbrush. I flooded all of the bearings in reel oil and worked them back and forth. It's smooth as butter now and I am happy.

    Dennis, just finished working on one today. I got it to go with a 550ss that I got in September. It’s certainly not my best looking Penn reel but it will be a great surf reel next spring! I could not get the main gear out of the side plate because the bearing was stuck so rather than taking a chance at damaging the reel I worked around it. I don’t think the reel had been serviced in quite a while. I was very impressed with the quality of the gears in this reel. I replaced the pinion bearing with a sealed bearing on my reel. My reel had a washer on top of the AR ratchet that wasn’t present on your reel. Also my reel had a chrome handle shank rather than a black one. Wish I had watched this before I serviced mine. Great video Dennis! - Chris

    Hi Dennis. These 650 's are really great reels, and undoubtely one of the most well regarded models from Penn. About a year ago I bought one 650ss from US, in used condition but in really good shape and I' ve been using it without any issues. A few days ago I bought another new in box from Germany and dated in the box from 28JUL1993. Btw, as I was servicing the new reel I've noticed that the crosswind gear is entirely made of brass, while in the used reel the crosswind gear is zinc w/a brass bushing. Very interesting, looks like they produced different combination of gear material at some point.. . Keep up the good work.

    There are two different versions of the reel. If you have the one with the 650 stamped in the side plate and not the one with the metal badge, then you will notice the difference. I believe the 650 with the stamped case was called the 650 pro and did have the brass gearing - Dennis

    @@2ndChanceTackle Hi Dennis. It's a metal badge in the sideplate, same as the other one. There is no mention to "650 Pro" in the reel, box or papers. It's brand New and gave me some trouble to take it apart, screws were stiffened and the internals were dry, and so was the grease, but in the end the reel was perfectly serviced.

    A very solid weight-made reel! I’m always amazed at the prices on these reels and the others in this series command on sales and auction sites. I’m also amazed at how much more use you can get out of one paper towel than I can. By the way, you are lucky with bearings! Good video Dennis.

    Hello Dennis, I have been reviewing your videos, great work. My goal was to see how the Pivot arm(Part 34c) is placed into that part of the assembly. I took mine apart and that piece is actually missing. I have no idea where it went. I am ordering the part. Would you please take time to make a video regarding that part of the assembly. TIA!

    If you switch the handle to right side you have to have 15bl pivot right? Is there a drive screw that fits in the left side of the gear the 9a doesn’t have the correct threads. Or is it not needed?

    I don't know. You can contact the folks at Mysticparts.com They sell the reverse pivot and they should know if there is a comparable screw for the 9a with the reverse thread - Thanks for asking - Dennis

    Why is my penn 650ss not reeling. It seems like the gold gear (main gear) is rubbing against that top little gear.

    There could be a lot of reasons. It is likely in the gear chain. Possible worn, damaged or broken teeth and any one of the gears. - Dennis

    Dennis, can you advise about the drag not working properly, when drag is applied it is loosening and tightening because the top capture nut is turning w drag

  • @2ndChanceTackle

    @2ndChanceTackle

    3 жыл бұрын

    I will take two guesses here. The first is that your drag stack is stuck to the metal washers and it needs to be serviced or the washers replaced in order to free it up. The second would be that the cap is broken or the threads on the axle shaft ore worn and not holding the tensioner knob firmly on the axle shaft. I would inspect all three. - Thanks for asking - Dennis

    The bail is probably missing the bump guard behind the bail arm. It can also be that the bail wire is bent down and needs to be trued up - Dennis
