I don’t own a Shimano reel. That’s kind of sad since I have over 80 vintage spinning reels. I have heard that the Stradic is a fine reel but I have no experience with them. I recently had a problem with a Roddy reel where someone put a lock washer under the rotor nut. I was really mad at whoever did that. I had to use a tiny chisel to bend the points down on that washer before that nut would budge. I don’t like to use hammers on reels! I use a tiny awl on pinions. Works pretty good. Often I’ll spray it with WD40 and brush off with a stiff toothbrush. From watching you I’d say Shimano is synonymous with screws. I like the oscillating system on this reel. Seems like it would be very accurate. It has a nice main gear. I haven’t been able to find Purple Power but Home Depot has a pretty good product that is similar. Don’t you love white reels - they show all the dirt! Never seen a drag washer setup like this one. Altogether this is a fine reel but as you know - too new for me! Great video Dennis!

I like the worm gear oscillation. It is similar to the level wind feature on bait casters. Daiwa uses it on some of their tournament reels as well. They are smooth! Like you, I have seen all kinds of substitutions inside reels. Screws, washers, springs, etc. Sometimes it needs to be done if you can't get parts. -Not sure why a lock washer was used! Thanks Chris - Dennis

Dennis, what type of fishing do you enjoy most? Do you have a favorite brand or series of reel to use?

I enjoy surf casting on the bayshore of New Jersey for Bluefish and Striped Bass. When I go on the ocean, it is for Blues, Blackfish and Sea Bass. I'm not a drift and dream guy. - Occasionally on freshwater, it's largemouth bass and Crappie -Thanks for asking

I have a 2500 that evidently has a bad pawl as it doesn't oscillate. I that a tricky job to replace?

No. The pawl assembly is easily accessible inside the case. There is a cover cap that is removed in order to replace the pawl - Not easy, but not that hard either. The difficult part of this reel is getting the lower case opened for the service, as you can see in the video - Dennis

Hey man, just found your channel. I recently was given a stradic 2500FJ. How similar are those to the 3000? Also, seems that the handle spins both forward and backwards even with the anti reverse switch turned on. What do I need to do to fix this problem? Thanks!

If you do not have an A/R function, there is a problem in the assembly. It could be as simple as a loose spring or it could be a broken or frozen A/R clutch. You would need to take apart the reel in order to do an inspection. The 3000 is similar in design, but I don't recall the model in the referenced video. Early ones use an A/R pawl set up and later ones used the A/R one way clutch. Dennis

Hi, I would like to know whether shimano stradic 5000 fj (2012 model) is compatible with stradic 6000 fj (2012 model) spool.

  • @2ndChanceTackle

I am not sure. Many models do share a body that can accommodate the 50 or 60 size spool as a swap. Not sure on this one.

You have it backwards on the spool shims. If the line is more at the top you need to lift the spool to get it even. By adding a shim. Otherwise great video. The 706z one helped me
