How to Fix a Seized Up Reel! | How to Fix a Loud Shimano Stradic

Ойын-сауық

In this video on how to fix a seized up reel and how to fix a loud Shimano Stradic, we completely do a teardown on my Shimano Stradic 5000 FK and clean everything up and replace broken bearings. This video will be a series because I don’t think many of you will watch a video that’s 45 minutes long!
.
.
My friend gave me this reel because it would turn at all when you pushed on the handle. After taking it apart I replace all the rusty components with new ones and I get it working like new again!

    *Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*

    18:57 - to remove that bearing, grab the main gear axle in a small vice with soft alloy or plastic jaws to hold it in place, and then just do it like you did. You can place a transparent plastic bag on top to catch the bearing if it flies off and at the same time be able to see what you're doing. I cringed several times watching those small parts almost flying off the table while you were trying to get that bearing off :)

    Good job with tear down only thing I would suggest. Use a parts tray especially for those tiny parts witch can be prone to loose. All you need cut bottom out of milk jug. About 3 to 4 inch deep. Works wonderful. And don't cost anything.

    I agree completely. I do reel repairs in SW Florida, ReelQualitySRQ and it is imperative to use a parts tray. Also I wouldn't improvise on video with a knife for safety reasons and I also always use a wrench instead of pliers so that the parts on expensive or any reels do not get marred. I hate opening someone's reel for service and finding a screw inside that was destroyed for lack of using proper tools. Very informative video though. Not bashing you at all, just concerns for safety and also for the equipment for the next guy working on it. Enjoyed the video.

    My repair method for a reel that I have that torn apart is to gather up all the little parts and pieces. This doesn’t include the ones that have flown across the room cause I find those with the vacuum cleaner in 5 to 10 years when I finally decide to clean under the piece of furniture that I never move to clean under. Then throw everything in the trash can, while cussing up a storm, and go buy a new reel...

    amazon... good location to find your bearings. I get ceramics for my upgrades there also. I also am a parts dealer with shimano and they are reasonable at that level. Amazon is still the best place to get them. I use a micrometer just to verify the size but if you search the RD part number on google, theres usually a site that will confirm the size of the bearings such as 8x14x4mm etc etc

  • @richardhardin191

    Better method for removing stuck bearing.....bench vice with wood on either side. secure the drive gear. I use a thin screwdriver to prevent damage to the washers under the bearing. prior to any attempt to remove that bearing or any for that matter, I always use WD40 and let it soak for a day. sometimes heat also works. If its frozen, you can give it a few taps with a chisel and sometimes it will break free. Saves you damage on the drive gear which can cost $40 depending on the reel.

    Great video thanks! Sounds like my Stradic c5000xg 🙈 I'll probably just send it in, if not too costly.. *Two tips I stumbled on* 1) For the tiny 0.9 hex nut - I found the pin/tool used to open SIM/SD card slot on most Android phones worked very well.. 2) The black plastic cover with two small screws is actually fitted to the nut it is covering. Remove just the two screws. You should be able to loosen/tighten the nut by hand turning the black plastic cover. Easy to align holes at reassembly. Hope that helps! 🤙

    Is the plastic that was holding on to that last bearing really flattened because of tightening the handle or was it designed that way?

  • @WestCoastFloridaFishing

    @WestCoastFloridaFishing

    There were no plastic pieces but there was those brass shims designed to reduce gear lash in the reel. Did that answer your question? If not add a Time stamp for me!

    @@WestCoastFloridaFishing At 17:24 you start talking about how the plastic holding onto the bearing you can't get off is a result of too much tightening of the handle. To me it just seems that the factory made it that way. Your thoughts?

  • @WestCoastFloridaFishing

    @WestCoastFloridaFishing

    3 жыл бұрын

    Aha now I see what you’re talking about. So that part where I say has been flattened is the actual main gear. That isn’t any plastic. That’s the metal gear that spins the pinion and spins the reel. The main gear does not have that flat “lip” holding onto the bearing right there.. when you take a new gear out of the reel that bearing is SUPPOSED to slide right off. Sometimes it’s really difficult to get that bearing off that gear and that is due to the handle being over tightened on. Great question! In my next service video I’ll go more in depth!

    In your videos you use "orientate" instead of orient when you start to take the reel apart. In the Army we were told to use orient , just as we were also told to use regardless as there was no such word as irregardless. Well both words are accepted words with orientate being an accepted 19th century word and orient an 18th century word. Irregardless, however, is not readily accepted unless you are in the Marines, of course. I spent the entire afternoon looking at Shimano teardowns and upgrades. Does that give you an idea of how interesting my life is? Keep them coming!! Thanks Doc 1/5 Cav

    Place longer end of gear into metal tube. put tip of flat screw driver under bearing so that when you rotate the screw driver in a turning motion it twists so that the pipe holds the gear in place keep rotation and one side of the screw driver pushes up the bearing the gear and twisting the screw driver in different positions until bearing pops off its alot safer, nothing jumps and you have alot lower risk of stabbing yourself
