I hear ya. Dennis is so good at this, he makes it look so easy. Sometimes, we reel-repair apprentices can only watch in wonderment. Years of experience have given Dennis this ability. If a guy really know what he's doing, no matter what his trade --- mechanic, carpenter, et al --- it is interesting, almost mesmerizing to watch them work. Dennis is one of those guys.

Interesting re. the manual information,as you mentioned in another comment. I recently just came across my manual for the 525 mag and not only did it have the schematic, but it had info regarding the various configurations of the drag washers..... which would result in a more/less powerful drag..........worth reading the manual I guess !! 😀

Great Video as usual Dennis. Anxiously waiting for your video on the Penn 555 GS. I have one that sat in its box for yrs! I mainly used my Penn JigMasters and Daiwa Sealine 50H. (Sealine 50H is tops IMO) I cant remember using my Penn 555 GS more then 2 or 3 times. In fact it looks like it just came out of the box! (wish I still had the box) Its Made in USA, has a rubber knob & I purchased it when I lived back on Long Island. (left there in 1999) So its got to be @ least 20 yrs old. It spins free and easy. Quiet as a mouse but Im sure it needs some cleaning, oil and grease. Keeping my eyes peeled for that video.

They should have 4 brake pads that can be adjusted to use just 2 if wanted, but without them, it will overrun, this was a problem with this reel when they were first made, the pins holding the brake pads in would fly apart on a hard power cast, but if the pins were stuck in with a touch of superglue the problem was fixed. I bought mine new and still have it.

I still use my open face ambassadeur reels and am pretty good with them, but...make that a big BUT...I've also gotten some hellacious birds nests. One false move and your fishing excursion can turn into a #%&**!! disaster. So I always carry a spinning rod/reel as a backup.

Mine is binding under load. Cranking the handle feels real smooth when I have nothing attached to the end of the line, sitting at home. But when I’ve got a 8 oz lure or crab snare on the beach the handle binds about once per turn. Any guesses what could be the problem or should I just do the full tear down and lube/grease?
