Dennis, just finished servicing a Penn 104 that was perfect except the anti-reverse did not operate. Took it apart and found that the only thing wrong was that the anti-reverse cog or gear was put in backwards. Fixed that, cleaned and lubricated the reel and now have a mint Penn 104. Don’t like the plastic bushings but the reel is extremely smooth and works perfectly. This video and another one on this reel that you have done made this job both easy and fun! Thanks again for generously offering your expertise to amateurs like me!

Okay, Dennis. Your posts have inspired me. I've got a Penn 650SS that I bought brand new years ago. It was missing a handle which I was gonna---famous last words--replace. Now, a mere 30 years later ha-ha, I've decided to fix that reel. I can get the handle from mystic parts and this video and your Penn 550SS video should help me out. Wish me luck and thank you!!

I have used brake cleaner to melt the old grease. Works on the toughest cases.

Brake cleaner and other solvents, like carburetor cleaners will work as well. I stay with the penetrating oil, because it is an oil and not a degreaser. If any residue is left from the degreasers, it could degrade the new lubes - Thanks for the suggestion - Dennis

I know these can be upgraded from felt to the HT-100 and Carbontex. I would go that route as there would be more max drag than the teflon. Also, I don't know a supplier for the teflon replacement if it is available - Thanks for asking - Dennis
