Farnsey always performed with his whole heart. He loved our joy and love for him and no performance was given without him showing us we were so important to him. He feed of the crowds love and then he gave us back ten fold. He is the absolute entertainer, he owns the stage and the crowd and always sold out at his concerts.

This is a 'People's Anthem' and remains current- is so relevant to so many of today's issues as well. I think it should be played in every: shopping centre - school - subway - etc. etc. People DO need to find their voice and make it heard. Whether we're talking about: school shootings, nuclear holocaust, 'me too' or whatever injustice is creating harm.

Many Aussies do not know the origins of the lyrics of this song and I'm so pleased to see that you took the effort to find out why it was written and shared your new knowledge with viewers. The pertinent lyric for Americans is the line about 'looking down the barrel of a gun' and maybe one day this song may become an anthem in the USA, too - against the all powerful gun lobby and the American Rifle Association. Many of John's songs carry a message for the greater good of the world. Some include, 'Beyond The Call, Age Of Reason, In Days To Come, See The Banners Fall and That's Freedom.' He has other fantastic songs and all have a meaning. This concert, named 'Whispering Jack,' is named after his record album of the same name. It was this record album that took John, with the new managerial direction of Glenn Wheatley, to incredible musical heights in Australia and other countries after a time of a floundering music career and financial problems. This record was bought by one in three households in Australia. Glenn believed in John so much that he sold his family home to finance the record and John was able to repay him due to his renewed success. So, that's the joy you see in John and his fans and the people of Australia. John is well-loved here because he IS such a lovely human being. Get well, John.

This is fully Farnham, Johns a lovely man, very earthy and humble about his abilities and generous to other musicians, a musicians musician. He has respect for his audience and delivers in spades, a J.F. concert never disappoints, he has great band members and back up singers who have stayed with him for over 30 yrs. Like Bruce Springsteen he’s an all round good guy in the industry Kieth Urbans another nurturing soul like Dolly they have that wonderful generous spirit coupled with tremendous natural ability which they don’t hesitate to share.

I love seeing people from other Countries reactions to JF & yes the H is silent. He is one of THE BEST singers in the world! He's an entertainer, & a comedian as well as The Voice, & is as humble & genuine as they come. He used to play this stadium just about every year, management used to put aside 9 nights, just in case, & they would sell them off one show at a time & he would sell out 9 shows in a row, & this stadium holds a little over 15000 people, then he would go to the next city & sellout multiple shows there, til he got around the whole Country. I used to work at this stadium & saw all his gigs here, even took the night off to see him in Jesus Christ Superstar, thats a good watch too if you're interested, John plays Jesus in this rock musical, & his version of Gesthemane is just insane. He is a phenomenon, with a monster voice & killer range, hard to believe he began his career in the 60s, reinvented himself a few times, & up until his recent battle with throat or mouth cancer; was still singing as strong as he ever has. His gigs are amazing they are so relaxed & fun & he puts EVERYTHING he has into every song he does, can you imagine how knackered he must be after 2hrs of that?! He is THE BEST SINGER to ever come out of Australia, not that he ever went out of the Country, as no one was ever interested in him or his music in the U.K. or the U.S.A. which is a total mystery as everyone in both Countries are going nuts for him now & love him & his talent, range & sense of humour, as much as we all do, he's such a funny guy. Speaking of duets John does a killer duet with Jimmy Barnes "When Something is Wrong With My Baby" if you want to give it a watch, I prefer the official video version for clarity & quality. Love that you love him man, hes definitely worth the time to watch. 😎👍

Aussie here. Although this particular concert simply was one of the best concerts anyone could see in their lifetime, then, now & in the future this isn't the best version of this song. It was released in 1986, I'm guessing not long before this concert. The song & John Farnham (or "The Voice or Farnsey as he is known) is like a fine wine, it's only gotten better over time. He knows how to perfect every word & every note like far beyond most singers. He is undoubtedly a GOAT, up there with Tom Jones, Celine Dion etc They all know that & are massive fans themselves. Anyhoo you really can't guage the audience reacts to this song in this era, you've got to see the performances decades later. See what it's become. It's more than "just an anthem" it is Australia's national anthem & everyone (no matter the age) knows the words but would fail with our actual Australian anthem. He somehow how even got better performing it & singing it too. The crowd is this performance was bat shit boring compared to what you would see now. What this song does to people is beyond a dictionary of adjectives. It's that feeling from that one song that resonates with ANYONE. Checkout him in his 60's singing it with Coldplay "You're the Voice" for a charity "Sound Relief" concert. The song has just got more legendary every decade on.

Many famous artists including CelineDion have covered it brilliantly but none have the passion that John brings to it , he also has other message songs which are also relevant to today ,AGE OF REASON , IN DAYS TO COME , WHEN THE WAR IS OVER all songs that make you think especially when your an old bloke like me who questions all the crap we humans perpetuate on ourselves and for what? The lyric you were looking at is HOW LONG CAN WE LOOK AT EACH OTHER DOWN THE BARREL OF A GUN .

These concerts were definately all sold out. I remember them well. Back then they had a general rule that when concerts were Sell Outs, then they would televise them both on normal TV, and at the same time Broadcast them on radio. That was so people could watch the concert on TV, dial down the volume to silent. Then turn on the stereo and tune into the broadcaster station and use the stereo's large speakers to get the audio at its absolute best. Both TV and Radio Broadcasters timed them perfectly in sync.

The interesting connection with that song and Farnsey was when Steve Prestwich, who wrote it, was the drummer for Little River Band (following the breakup of Chisel) when John was their vocalist at the time. They recorded a version of it that was subsequently used for a mini series. So much like 'Playing to Win' that song harks back to John's LRB days!

Some say this is Australia's unofficial Anthem but as far as I am concerned it is our Anthem. Bagpipes are also used in the song "Its a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll" by AC/DC. John also does a cover version of that song. There are many clips on youtube to chose from. I like the clip "Tom Jones and John Farnham at the Logies 1993" That will put hair on your chest. PS: The Logies are Australia's TV Emmy Awards.

Dude, I just love the friggin cheeky little smirk and look of contentment you have on your face whilst watching and listening to the performance. It’s almost like you are keeping a secret from your viewers… or in this case, you the knew the performance was going to be brilliant and it was playing out that way!

After a mass shooting in Australia in 1996; the Port Arthur rampage prompted a severe crackdown on firearms that saw more than 640,000 weapons turned in to authorities. Check out the band Three Dog Night do "One is the Loneliest Number"; then react to John Farnham performing it live. He is the only one with a strong enough voice to sing that song besides TDN. And I'm sure Three Dog Night's name meaning wasn't lost on John Farnham. Another gr8 Aussie band is the Little River Band. Get well, Farnsey, we miss ya! x

Its funny that I've never seen a 'reactioneer' notice that (in this video) at 6:47 John hurls the mic stand straight up in the air, catches it - then propels it off stage a few seconds later. He was known for his mic shenanigans and it was just another trait that made him amazing to witness (so much more than just 'watch') him live. Also, nearly all of his backing band and singers have been with him from the mid 80's - they're family......

Just a little trivia for you. The writer Keith Reid (former member of the band Procol Harum) and his Co-writer's refused John Farnham permission to sing "You're The Voice". John's friend and manager Glen Wheatley said let's just go into the studio and do it anyway, Glen actually sold his house to help pay for studio time to record the song. After John had recorded the song, Glen sent Keith Reid a copy of John's version of the song. After hearing Farnham sing his song Keith Reid has said that NOBODY else would ever be able to sing the song better.

John had a reasonably successful early career starting at about 18. It slowly dwindled until he was recruited by The Little River Band, Australia's premier soft rock band of the 70s. Following that he changed management and the continuing story has been told below. Get well soon John

I think the power of this song can be seen in more recent performances when he plays some benefit gigs and the average age of the audience would be his grandkids age. He sounds amazing and they crowd know every word. The link below is of one with him playing this with Coldplay - he's more than 60 and the crowd are just belting it out. We look at each other, down the barrel of a gun. To me he sings of war and not letting it happen again. Australia doesn’t have guns. You always get Bagpipes in this song. Now for a different and older John. Try John and Anthony Warlow live at The Main Event Concert singing Granada. John is a true Showman and he is funny singing Opera with Anthony but good. Thank you.
