Spot on. For me there was no amount of brutal kills that could cover up the bad writing. It actually felt like a comedy gone very wrong. I hope, like you, the 3rd one can save the trilogy, but at this moment in time it’s a mess.

Hawkins being the one to tell Laurie that Myers wasn't after her, rather than Allyson telling her, makes no sense. Hawkins was busy bleeding out on the ground when Sartain explained to Allyson, inside the police car, his plan to bring Michael to Laurie's house to reunite them. There's no way Hawkins could have heard them.

Your thinking too hard. Sartain slit hawkins throat after they had Michael knocked out, so he obviously knew he was evil and sick. Then Laurie tells him that they defeated Michael in her house, so it's not that hard to put two and two together. The last thing he saw was sartain driving away with Michael.

If we are to believe the newly established reality that says Michael doesn't care about Lauri ..why the hell are we investing in her plot line in the next film? He's not coming for her yet we're to believe that an 70 old wounded woman is going to go actively hunt down a psychopath mythical killer for some sort of vengeance over her daughter's death? That makes no damn plausible sense ..she could literally just leave town at this point and Mike wouldn't even know apparently lol

I get your point, but if the central conceit of this reboot (that it's an examination of the aftereffects of trauma) is to be believed, then I think you can understand why we should care. The randomness of the 78 killing spree doesn't make it any more random for the character of Laurie - it ruined her life regardless of whether Michael gives a shit. DGG is a competent filmmaker, and I want to believe that HK was intended to be this kind of frenzied precursor to a much more elemental and spare Halloween Ends. Who knows. I want to believe that this is the intention, but could be wishful thinking at this stage...

Brilliant review. Sums up my thoughts on the film perfectly. I think if you're someone who likes the higher body counts, spectacle and gore of Halloween's 2 and 4, and you don't particularly care for a deeper or more coherent story, you'll probably enjoy this film. But otherwise, I thought it was pretty disappointing. I don't like the move towards making Michael a supernatural entity after they retconned all the sequels to try and make him a "flesh and blood man" again, only to turn on a dime and do the opposite. No way he's getting up after being shot, stabbed, burnt, beaten to a pulp, getting his head kicked in, and having a pitchfork rammed into his spine.

  • @lopirobinson1991

    @lopirobinson1991

It’s kind of impossible to make him anything other than something more when they do what they do to him in the films. If they made him a normal man it would be so stupid, unless they dialed back the violence done to him. He would’ve died from blood loss alone before the end of the film. Hannibal Lecter doesn’t get shot up and stabbed and lose fingers and hit by cars and beaten then get back up because he is a normal man. It wouldn’t make any sense if he was Joe down the street. In Scream, those are normal humans and after they get stabbed a couple times and then shot they die. Michael has enough happen to him to kill 6 people, let alone one.

For me, it suffers a lot of the Missing Act 3 Syndrome that has been prevalent in a lot of blockbuster attempts for the last decade or so. I mean. It's a fun ride while it lasts. But my brain tends to be lead to believe that a real show-stopper of a climax is going to cap things off. But. No. As act two ends, so does the film. And I ask... Wait, that was it?? People may complain about James Wans Malignant. But that was one heckuvan ending. Halloween Kills sets up that big confrontation between the Shape qnd the townsfolk surrounding him annnd.. they just cuts away to a speech only to return in bits and tiny flashes of slow mo takedowns, killing all momentum and built up hype. Sure it's middle movie. Sure they can't end with definite conclusion. But at least deliver a showstopper dance number so to speak before the year or so intermission until the last third. It was a fun flick with nice hard R violence through most of it. I just wish there was a climax of some kind.

I've got to be brutally honest, I really don't understand why they're still flogging this horse. Halloween (1978) would've been better off as a standalone. i respect the manner in which the original was crafted but i don't have any particular affection for it. Personally I prefer Black Christmas (1974) and classic Giallo fare, of course I understand it's impact on mainstream audiences. I thought the trailer for this film looked bloody awful tbh.

Well, you're preaching to the choir about giallo, and Black Christmas is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. What Carpenter did in 78 on a meagre budget was to wring as much tension out of a tiny budget as he could, and in thoroughly succeeding I'm afraid he created a bottom line which is still being mined to this day.

Great review.👍👏 For me, Anthony Michael Hall is HORRENDOUS in this movie.🤦‍♀️ I watched it 4 times and it was so much more enjoyable AFTER I fast forwarded through the way too long Tommy speech at the silly bar with the puppet and ventriloquist.🙄 Not only was it ridiculous, insufferable dialogue, it was inaccurate. When was Tommy brutally attacked & why did he forget that Lindsey was with him & Laurie and how did he forget her house was across the street, not next door?🤦‍♀️ That long, dragged out hospital mixup could have been time given to a Lindsey & Laurie scene at the hospital and a Laurie & Sheriff Bracket scene when she woke up after surgery. Powerful moments that could have been.🤦 HATED what Frank said to Laurie, “it’s not about you”. Am I the only one who remembers Halloween 1978? She saw him stalk her all day. He then killed her friends and put them on display for her. He then repeatedly attacked her. That’s all she knows and has ever been aware of. How could she not always believe that it’s about her? Hated that line!🤦‍♂️ There needed to be much more screen time for Lindsey & Marion. Why did it have to be them at a silly bar? Why couldn’t we see each of them in their homes watching the news and then they each rush to the hospital? Was a second fight between Lindsey & Michael cut from the film? I can’t figure out why she was in such worse shape and down near the bridge when they found her. Something is missing. Tommy’s line to Lonnie outside about Laurie “I’m glad she survived “. This is supposed to be Tommy & Laurie. That delivery by him was absolutely awful.🤦‍♀️ There were a lot of things I liked about the movie but there are just as many things I didn’t like.

'there's someone in the house, I'll just go check' it would have worked better if the couple in Myers house brought the mob there rather than having them die for not showing common sense and getting out of there. I've been thinking (I know, working without tools again) and I feel that H2018 was a very effective bookend/resolution to the 2-film arc of 1978/2018. I realize now why my heart sank when I heard that there were going to be two more films. The prospect of ANY follow-up to 2018 would, to my mind, invalidate that two-film arc to some degree. In a way, I think that's why I disliked the latest Bond film. The first two Craig films made a very satisfying story arc and when they started retconning a link between those and his last two films, they retroactively diminished the prior movies. I'm not happy. To summarize the sheer stupidity of the movie that is Halloween Kills, I'll somewhat quote Tommy Doyle, it might not be his exact word, but here it is ... "We don't know what he looks like, he's always worn a mask". What? No, he's worn the mask one day in 1978, and another day in 2018. He's been incarcerated the vast majority of his life, and they want us to believe he's still this mystical presence and no one knew what he looked like during the Benny Hill chase scene in the hospital, not even the cops? No mug shots, no documentary were ever made on the man that terrorized Haddonfield in 1978, and continues to cast this shadow forty years later? lol They are looking for Michael Myers in Halloween Kills, but no police presence in the streets? No choppers? I could go on and on, I'm sorry, this movie was so DUMB. This trilogy is a rehash of all of the previous movies, put together by two clowns, who most likely had good intentions, but failed miserably. I need to watch this train wreck again tonight, they don't make good comedies anymore, and I need a good laugh this weekend.

  • @patrickdoherty4527

Yeah, exactly! He's a crazy man who killed a (relatively) small number of people in the 70s. They want us to buy into the myth of Michael Myers but they retconned all the sequels which helped establish him as an unstoppable killer. "No mug shots, no documentary were ever made on the man that terrorized Haddonfield in 1978, and continues to cast this shadow forty years later?" That would have made for a much more interesting film, like a mockumentary about what happened. I know that would NEVER get green lit but still. The climax could have been the documentary crew coming face to face with Michael.

In the middle of it, we watch Laurie Strodes fight for her life and grows weaker and weaker as the body count increases. You end the movie with her dying, it becomes breaking news all over the place, Laurie Strodes, original survivor of Michael Myers, finally died of her injuries inflicted by Myers. I thought 2018 was a decent movie except the unneeded side plot with the doctor and the the overly cartoon like death of the doctor. The death of the nurse in this movie is something I'd expect from John wick (which would suit that movie) and I was like "what the actual hell was that?!". The finger poke to the eyes death scene again made me go "that's just stupid" (I know it's a Halloween 4 reference but try and keep it more grounded in reality rather than "look at this cool shit!"). Big John just stands there and grieves his partner for literally one second before he let's Michael know he's there by saying "you've come home". No shit sherlock, run! Ohhh boy. Halloween ends is going to have Michael talking isn't it.. how noone since the original has been able to actually understand the character of Michael genuinely confuses me.

This will be a long one! First the flash back looked great but tonally it was all wrong, instead of having a very serious tone the kids are written very badly and act really badly and a cop leaves them to fend for themselves with a killer on the lose and all the cops looking for Michael act like bumbling morons and it really hurt the flashback! I have to point this out in 2018 the cops before Michael killed them phoned in a dead body, there is no way more cops were not on the way and how could the fire fighters get there first and the fire fighter stand around and only go at Michael one at a time and it looked abet stupid even if the sequence was cool! There is no way Hawkins is alive, in 2018 Sartain stabbed him multiple times and than ran him over with the car and Cameron did not find him right away or he would have been at the hospital long before Laurie! Tommy, Lindsay, Marion and Brackett are wasted and we learn nothing about them in this movie and there is no meaningful scenes between Laurie and Lindsay or Laurie and Brackett or Laurie and Marion! Marion's death was stupid she kicks open the door eliminating her only barrier between her and Michael gets Michael's attention and she said this is for Loomis and she is out of bullets and she does not even try and go out her side of the car and just excepts her faith! That couple that joined them the woman disappears while Michael is killing Marion and her husband and only comes back to try and shoot him after everyone is dead and she gets to close even though she has a clear shot and Michael causes her to shoot herself, which looked stupid! Lindsay does put up a good fight but her chase sequence was over way to fast and she is sidelined the rest of the movie! The two subplots in this movie the hospital and Myers house with the 2 guys was horrible and completely ruined the flow of the movie! Laurie and Hawkins had some good scenes together and Karen was actually good in this movie but there characters are sidelined so much of the movie that it really hurts things! I admit I did like Lonnie but he brings his son and Allison to the Myers house and tells them to stay in the car while he goes in by himself and never thought to call for backup on the way to the Myers house which seems like a very long drive! The mob at the end of the movie you expect me to believe only two people had guns and when Michael is out cold instead of continuing to hit him they just let Brackett go in for the finishing shot giving Michael a chance to recover and no one thought to fall back and get in there car and run him over! When Allison and Cameron enter the Myers house the tension is ruined by that song on the record player and they take time to examine the dead bodies and Cameron who was better in this movie leaves Allison to continue searching and when he sees his dad and than Michael charges at him he did nothing but freeze up and Allison was the one that tried to save him and he really did nothing in this movie! I liked seeing Karen saving Allison and having Michael follow her to the ambush but number one she should have stabbed him a few times with that pitch fork and number two she should have stayed to make sure Michael was finished! How Michael suddenly appeared behind Karen is up for debate because there was no way he could have gone up the stairs! The other question from the abrupt ending is Karen alive or dead, I know from the leaked script there was an extended sequence that would have confirmed that Karen was dead but I suspect it was removed to give them an out and I noticed something similar with Tommy and Bracket's deaths! This movie is poorly written, has terrible dialog, braindead characters, wasted legacy characters, horrible subplots, horrible pacing, very little suspense, this movie is a mess!

The only thing I enjoyed about this film was some of the kills. Other than that it is absolutely terrible in every way. The firefighter massacre scene was cartoonishly stupid. The random chanting back and forth of "evil dies tonight" was embarrassingly stupid. The scene at the end where he allows everyone to beat the shit out of him only to come back and destroy them one by one like John Wick or some shit....the dialogue in general was just awful and why did Tommy Doyle go to a talent show to talk about how he almost got killed 40 years ago!?!?

I think I liked it slightly more than you, but not by much. The part that is a body-count film is really well done (the light tube kill, for instance). I liked the more modern take on the mob mentality, but, yeah, it didn't resolve. I thought they might be going for a defund-the-police thing (forgot about when it was filmed), but the film seems to straddle the fence on whether you should or shouldn't trust the system. I hated the ending, though. To me, "it really sets up the next film" is not a plus for a film. Have a structure for the film you got. It's not a TV show.

  • @midnightmoviedreams

I felt the same way during this film- where's the tension that some of these characters could get out alive? Watching Prom Night after this actually made me appreciate a human slasher. It seemed like a foregone conclusion that they'd all die. It's also apparent that we the viewer care more about these "loose ends" of previous survivors getting killed than Michael. Within this new mythology of Michael as complete inescapable monster- why does he choose to now pose the victims? The death tableaus don't make sense to me, even as they satisfy the macabre, as there is no motivation for Michael to do so. His nest is the house and becoming this symbol of evil incarnate so his singular motivation wouldn't care for posing. The muddy themes also come through with all of the monologues- mob justice, becoming the evil- standing in evil's shoes. They felt more like an outlined concept that the writer wanted to achieve- rather than them actually coming through on film.

Yes, this was a major disappointment. The film had a nice opening for the most part, but after the opening credits it just declined to a total anti-climax and just stops rather than ends. Yeah, the survivors are so stupid in this film and it was really a crying shame that *Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie is SIDELINED in her own story.* Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween IV-The Return Of Michael Myers (1988), Halloween H20-20 Years Later (1998), & Halloween (2018) are all awesome. The rest are either garbage or mediocre as hell as far as I am concerned.

After watching this last night I have a greater appreciation for Rob Zombies movies. I enjoyed some scenes and I can’t fault the effects. But you hit the nail on the head that Laurie is sidelined in her own movie, there was no purpose to her scenes with the cop in the hospital and many of the flashbacks. In the other movies you don’t realise Michael is there until it’s too late but, as you pointed out, he’s become a bit more like Jason which makes him less scary in my opinion.

@@GrumpyAndrewsHorrorHouse the whole ethos of the original Halloween is loneliness. No matter how many people are around Laurie she is lonely she is disconnected to everyone around her. The same with Dr Loomis no one listens to him so he is disconnected too. It’s the loneliness that makes the original movie terrifying. What lurks within our own loneliness a darkness we try to hide from by running from it. But as we all know we can’t hide from ourselves. There is darkness within us all and we see it when there is silence. That is the essence of the original Halloween. That is why it’s so terrifying.

I have to be honest and say that I think the Christmas Sweater is the most subtle piece of character work across both movies.
