    "Let's take a story by a Catholic writer, about Catholics dealing with a Catholic subject, in a Catholic way, and shoe-horn other religions in, because we are more modern, now and tastes have changed." I'm not religious, but blimey, what a cop out. Why do film companies buy a story, then abandon the thing that it's about?

    Ironically people forget that in the Exorcist book the Regan and her mum are atheists. Especially the Mum and is very anti religion and wants to "protect" her daughter from religious influence. - just finished reading it lol. Mind you I have always had an issue about possession films when an ancient demon which pre dates Christianity is defeated by Priests and their doctrines/rites. A demon from a different religions or ancient belief would not acknowledge the existence of other religions so wouldn't even fear it. Same goes with demons of other faiths yet always a Catholic/Christian priest exorcise the demon - seriously lol

    @GrumpyAndrewsHorrorHouse Its so absurd. Some of these religions forbid each others practices for numerous reasons. This movie doesn't understand how religion works, which is dumb considering it's the foundation of the subject matter. It also says that all religions are interchangeable and that nothing else matters, ignoring everything that seperates them from each other.

    The Exorcist and The Exorcist III were the two good films in the franchise. The Exorcist III amazingly got bad reviews when it was released but I have always loved it. The two things that this movie had going for it were the inclusion of Ellen Burstyn and the cameo of Linda Blair.

    One of the worst things about a lot of modern movies I’ve noticed is like that even when there’s only one writer in the credits, so many big budget films feel like they’re written by multiple people with clashing ideas in terms of pace & tone. There were so many moments in the new Halloween trilogy. Some of these nigh-fourth wall-breaking haha moments did get a chuck or two out of me, but it feels often tonally like really incongruous in these “serious”movies. Humor can be really effective but hard to nail in a lot of horror movies admittedly. In my opinion Exorcist 1, 3 & The Ninth Configuration have close-to perfect scripts and dialogue. The pontifications and kinda philosophical staccatos characters dance around each other’s lines is really special and thought-provoking. A real testament to Blatty’s scripts & direction, love those aforementioned movies because of that especially. These film’s & characters are really engaging even before the nasty stuff starts. Sorry for the tirade, I just feel like Blatty’s scripts and lines involving faith & philosophy specifically sound like they came from a personal place, where everything I’ve seen, heard and watched about this new film just sounds like the most generic regurgitated slop. Sounds very bitter and definitely unfair before seeing, but I have no interest in this and I’ll be surprised if we get 3 of these. But with the weird state of cinematic horror these days, who the hell knows. I could Believe it.

    I think you're absolutely on the money with regard to how personal Blatty's words feel. As to another of your excellent points: a lot of people gloss over how frikking funny parts of Blatty's scripts are, There are parts of The Exorcist, Exorcist III and The Ninth Configuration which are downright hilarious, but they ALWAYS come from character.

    When I saw the trailer of this movie for the first time, the moment they said they were missing for three days but they thought it was hours, I thought "Ooh, and Alien Abduction/Time Displacement movie. We don't get a lot of those." Since, you know, that's a common motif of the supposed cases of those. And then it was an Exorcist sequel. I haven't even seen the original, and I was disappointed.

    Thanks, I think that about sums it up for me. I already didn't want to watch this and now, I won't. Right off the bat, when I heard of this coming, I thought, "there is no fvking way they can top the original." The original was so well made, so shocking, even by today's standards. It is a movie that CANNOT be remade today. There's no way a movie studio is going to allow an under aged actor to go through the hell that Linda Blair went through in order to get the shocking scenes. Linda had to go to therapy to get over the making of the film. There are just too many grey areas in production to halt a movie from being THAT shocking. This movie was doomed from the get go. You can't tip-toe around the horror and borrow the name of a franchise and hope you get a monetary return. This was a business movie, not a film.

    I can totally respect that, even though I find it such a high fall from Alien Im having trouble completely disregarding it. For a while I at least enjoyed the visuals but watching it recently I came to realise how artificial it looks compared to Alien. Even the dialouge feels peculuar - I often find myself thinking "people dont talk like this". Perhaps the hole crew consists of androids instead of just David? Wich lead to my final thought; like George Lucas, I strongly suspect Ridley was surrounded by more talented people at the beginning of his career than today.@@GrumpyAndrewsHorrorHouse

    Hey Andrew, big fan and love the channel. Yeah, The Exorcist is one of those movies that should never be re-made, re-booted, etc. It's a classic that's hard to top and anything they do is going to be compared to the original, although. I do think Exorcist 3 with George C Scott and Brad Dourif is very underrated. Credit for them trying something new, but I just didn't feel it. Maybe they should've focused on just having one victim instead of two. Love the Avengers Assemble line. It felt exactly like that. Quick second question for you. I got a gift of a picture of Universals' Colin Clive(Henry Frankenstein) arm wrestling Hammers' Peter Cushing(Victor Frankenstein), with both versions of the monsters backing them up, a pretty cool picture. Who do you think would win in a knockout drag out fight? Clive or Cushing? I personally would go for Cushing, since he's not afraid to get his hands dirty, (Frankenstein must be Destroyed). Clive's Dr. Frankenstein always had someone else do his dirty work. Keep up the great work, love the content!!!

  • @GrumpyAndrewsHorrorHouse

    I agree, Cushing Frankenstein would wipe the floor with Clive Frankenstein. Remember Clive's Frankenstein being all bedbound in Bride of Frankenstein and overcome by the events of the first film? If you can’t pick one it means to me that you actually have faith in none so how could something of that nature have success? Telling over showing seems to be a problem with mainstream cinema these days, from the various products of the Mouse-Industrial Complex through to even otherwise solid stuff - The Creator was great, for instance, but it was hardly subtle in terms of meaning. You mentioned Insidious, but this also sounds a lit like it owes a lot to the Conjuring films?

  • @GrumpyAndrewsHorrorHouse

    @GrumpyAndrewsHorrorHouse

    If so then they haven't even learned lessons from The Conjuring movies either. At least the best of The Conjuring films have sequences that understand how to build and release tension. Believer cannot muster that for even short periods or sequences let alone across the duration of the film. There is no building towards the ritual, more a feeling that the film thinks "well, it's time for the exorcism bit now."

  • @RB01.10
    @RB01.108 ай бұрын

    This may be a bit long but I had to get this off my chest: This movie was horrifically bad, even worse than what I expected. It wasn’t scary at all, overused the jump scares, and bombarded you with loud noises to the point where it got old and annoying fast. This film also felt like it had a lot of stuff taken out. What was the point of the girls going in the woods in the first place? It’s never explained what exactly happened to them there, or how / why they got possessed there ; you could’ve cut out that whole subplot of them going missing in the woods and had them being possessed from the get go and nothing would’ve made any difference. Also, what was that weird shot of the dead white horse? It looked like they were hinting at something but it was glossed over fast. So yeah it seemed like there was promise, especially with the girls going missing but it just squandered it badly. What also didn’t help was that they had the audacity to lazily copy & paste shots and dialogue from the original to the point where it felt like nostalgia baiting just for the sake of it. Don’t even get me started on Chris, she was absolutely wasted and treated horribly to the point where it just became depressing. One redeeming moment was the final shot as it was legit a nice moment but even that couldn’t save the entire film. The studio really thought this would launch a new trilogy? By starting off this horribly ? It’s likely going to crash at the box office next week, especially when the Taylor Swift movie comes out.

    I thought it was ridiculous that Exorcist Believer was billed as a direct sequel to the original. As a devoted fan of Blatty’s novel and Friedkin’s brilliant film adaptation, I felt it was an insult to call Believer a “direct sequel”. As soon as I heard that, I refused to see it. The novel Legion is a direct sequel. Blatty’s own film adaptation (The Exorcist 3) was a fantastic film. Though the novel doesn’t have an exorcism scene, the film company big shots wanted to tie the movie into the Exorcist franchise so they made Blatty alter the script and incorporate an actual exorcism so they could title the film Exorcist 3. But it explores and expands upon the original novel and film’s theme of the mystery of faith through the continued friendship of Father Dyer and Detective Kinderman. The demon allows the soul of an executed serial killer to possess the body of Father Karras and commit a series of gruesome murders. THAT is the one and only sequel. Certainly one to watch over and over upon occasion. The Exorcist Believer? I will never see it. Even if it was free.

I will say this, Green and co did an admirable job on the 1st Halloween follow-up. Then there were 2 and 3. Absolute horse muck. You should watch Mark Kermode's review of the Exorcist Believer. It'll make your day! Thanks again for your review. Brilliant!

People who say it's a worthy sequel, know absolutely fuck-all about cinema! I've seen loads of 5-star reviews for this sack o' crap... EH??? Thanks for the review, sounds like I should save my $$. Tbh when I saw the trailer, my thoughts were that unlike the original Exorcist it's geared more for mainstream audience and not horror fans. Quick off topic question, you mentioned UK theater goers are generally polite and quiet, do they enforce age limits? I ask bc in my small theater (US in Florida) they don't and I had Scream 6 ruined by someone asshats bringing in a few 5-6yos.

    I agree with Mark Kermode's impression of Green's Chris MacNeil. This wasn't Blatty's Chris MacNeil... She wouldn't have written that book. She wouldn't have made the "patriarchy"comment. And I don't believe she would have been intrigued by exorcism after the ordeal she went thru 50 years ago. In the original film, we go to the real location of Georgetown... In this film, we go to the "made up" location of Percy (not Perry), Georgia. For me, canon was immediately shattered. It might as well have taken place in Haddonfield. This film played it "safe" compared to the original. Rev. John Nicola ( one of the tech advisors for Friedkin's film) would have found this absurd IMO.

    'all' of it was rubbish. The girls were unconvincing however, I do realise they have skills. Nonetheless, I believe the director is at fault here. The best way to describe this film is 'empty' - The only horrifying thing about this film was the film itself. What a mess.

    Yes, I agree. David Gordon Green holds the bag on this one. There was no vision, no driving creative need, only the desire to use IP to make another movie in the Exorcist "universe". Bankrupt.

    Jason Blum is the real menace here. David Gordon Green may be making the worst Blumhouse films, but Blum is the one who signs off on this shit. The man should be banned from aquiring the rights to any established film franchises. I don't care what crap he creates from his own little brain, but leave the classics alone!

    I said a lot of similar stuff in my review . I was looking forward to this actually for the most part enjoying the Halloween movies by DGG . I thought he would atleast bring something new and creative to the table but nope . That monologue at the end was soo drawn out and Ann Dowd great actress she’s giving the line “ u know what evil is I’ll tell you what I think it is and he didn’t even ask . She just proceeds to tell her view anyway 😅 0 tension and the way the mother died was so over dramatic she could have had a more common death and as u said off screen it wasn’t necessary at all . Ellen burnstyns character cameo was a disappointment too

    Most people only understand or notice messages that movies and tv shows try to say if it says the message openly out loud so yea most people are that stupid. People love to talk about subtlety very often but most people cant even see things if they are done in a subtle way. It does not matter how obvious something is if they dont say the message out loud most people wont notice it.

    This movie just comes off as generic modern horror. I actually don’t think it’s all that terrible (if you haven’t seen The Exorcist). I actually quite liked the early part when the girls were missing and I thought it could have been a decent missing persons thriller. At the point where it starts to lean into being an Exorcist sequel is where I started to feel like I was going to projectile vomit! The actual exorcism scene has absolutely no impact and is played like an action scene. It has no depth. There is nothing to tie it into the original movie apart from a few superficial bits of window dressing. Kids who have never seen the original who enjoy modern horror might get something out of it but if you are a fan of the original you will find nothing here to pull you in. It also has no cliffhanger or anything left to do at the end to justify the upcoming sequels.

    Thanks for watching :) And I have to agree, a lot of subtlety seems to have gone out of movie making, it seems. Perhaps because we're in an era where companies think every movie has to make a billion dollars and they feel the need to make it work for people who are half watching, with an eye on their phones? Or, perhaps, there's less room for storytelling with any kind of singular vision, for fear that lucrative audience "quadrants" might be lost?

Plus the Director ruined the Halloween movies so badly that I was skeptical of this movie. You really shouldn't touch beloved classics unless you are going to update them in a way that improves them, not just "we're going to have a completely different take on it".
