Theatre of Blood (1973) review | Vincent Price

'Theatre of Blood' ('Theater of Blood' in the US) is the third of a trio of revenge-based horror comedies from Vincent Price in the 70s, following his two Dr Phibes films.

Remember seeing this as a young kid in the 70,s and the Poodle thing was the most disturbing thing I had ever seen as a kid. For me it was this movie and the tingler that i saw on a Saturday matinee for TV. I actually believed the it was real

The first time I watched this film I was 10 years old (1981) I think ITV showed it as their were ads and pre channel 4, I had no idea Diana Rigg was Lionhearts sidekick until the end of the film.

Btw, Diana Rigg was not the only ex-"Avenger" here. Ian Hendry was the original star of the first series of The Avengers, with Patrick Macnee as his co-star. Hendry was replaced by Honor Blackman, who left to do Goldfinger, and ultimately replaced by Diana Rigg, who left for OHMSS (and other films).

I think we can consider Diana Rigg's character in this a sort of career call back to her gender fluid appearance in the play "Twelfth Night" where she plays Viola who pretends to be a young boy named Cesario. Yes, I do believe the audience is supposed to be in on the joke from the beginning. The reveal was a major feature in the promotion of the film before it ever opened in the theatres.

Absolutely love this film.Price is brilliant and the supporting cast are very good to.The scene that sticks in my mind is the decapitation of Arthur Lowes character.Very gruesome. The thing that puzzled me about this murder was how did the head appear on top of the milk bottle outside the flat of ian hendrys character really weird

Great review Andrew. The film is , British...class! It does have a superb cast as you mention in your review. but, you didn't mention Eric Sykes. He is the most comedic turn in the whole film for me. Also the wonderful Madeline Smith is in the cast.

Question 1 answered: Lionheart believed that he is a great actor, but he is not. That is the point. He in his murders actually goes beyond his skills he portrayed on the stage. Question 2 answered: Yes, it is supposed to be surprised at a first showing. Especially if you're not paying attention.

This is one of my favourite Vincent Price movies. I love how it constantly switches gears from wicked comedy to gruesome horror, to melodrama and back to comedy and all performed with gusto and perfectly judged tone by Price. I always thought of Madhouse as being the unofficial third Phibes movie, mainly because of the inclusion of the Doctor Death character who was obviously inspired by Dr Phibes but actually, you're right, Theatre of Death is a lot closer in tone to the Phibes films than Madhouse. I have a question which was triggered by my mention of Madhouse and a video on your channel talking about the old horror double bills on BBC 2 from back in the day. Do you recall the old House of Hammer magazine which included comic strip adaptations of the classic Hammer films as well as original comic strips, some of which looked as if they were drawn for 2000AD? I started collecting them back in the day from issue 10 which featured a stunning comic strip adaptation of The Curse of the Werewolf. The comics were adapted from the original scripts and not the finished films, which is why there were some artistic discrepancies between the comics and the movies. They also featured reviews and retrospectives of classic and cult movies (Not just Hammer films). This is where I first saw a reference to Madhouse long before I eventually got to see the actual movie. It appeared in issue 11, which featured the comic strip adaptation of The Gorgon. Just wondered. I still have some of these magazines but not all of them sadly. I moved house several times and lost a lot of stuff in the various moves. I used to have quite a lot of them, including the really good adaptation of Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter. I may still have that one. Haven't seen it in awhile. Anyway, an excellent review. I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next one

I actually get some of the kills from Theatre Of Blood mixed up with the ones from the Phibes movies, they are so similar in tone. I read somewhere that they actually had the idea for a Dr Phibes vs Count Yorga movie! Which is interesting considering Robert Quarry had already been pitted against Price in Dr Phibes Rises Again. In the end the project had the plug pulled on it,but they toyed with the idea for quite some time.

It's interesting how quite a few Price films are very similar in that they are basically a revenge movie but I am always for seeing them. Its the same with the Amicus portmanteau movies which are basically the same movie over again but I love them all. I think it helps that I'm watching them retrospectively. If I was watching them come out at the time I would probably be saying "not another one ffs"

Surely the irony of the film is that Edward Lionheart was a better actor 'off stage' than on!!! He was able to convince the theatre critics he was someone else right until he revealed himself to them just before they (the theatre critics) died. In a strange logic this is what made Lionheart a 'great' actor - not by what he did on stage but rather in real life. This is actually a bigger plot twist than a 'Tales of the unexpected' episode!!!

Great review. I now want a t-shirt that reads: 'Shakespeare - Never Above A Knob Gag.'🤔 Coral Browne, who at the time, was shortly going to be married to Vincent Price, kept 'corpsing' when confronted by her future husband in his 'Butch' get up. As her demise is one of the nastiest in the movie it needed to be serious banter, but she said that she kept seeing Vincent in that afro wig, and would lose it, which would cause Vincent to start laughing too (he, Peter Cushing, and Christopher Lee were notorious corpsers, apparently). I think Lionheart was loved by his audiences, but loathed by the critics - a large number of his plays are shown, and one would not put that many on unless one had an audience. The only question I have, is simply: who put Horace Sprout's (Arthur Lowe) severed head on to the milk bottles? A superb movie, though, which I think should be shown to children to get them interested in Shakespeare. Yes, really.

I love your story about mixing up the two movies on television. You basically watched "Theatre of Blue Velvet", ha ha. I just love the David Lynch film, it's like a teen sleuth story (Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew) in a frightening nightmare world where lovely and idyllic American suburban life is infested by evil at its most nefarious. A gripping piece of 80's cinema. Since "Theatre of Blood" involves revenge, another fun revenge film, though a black comedy and not a horror vehicle, is "Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe" from 1978 (also featuring Robert Morley). I rarely hear anything about it but it is a hoot. Definitely a cult movie. In "Theatre of Blood" I always get a supreme chuckle out of Butch the hair dresser; his customer in that scene is actress Coral Browne whom Vincent would marry in '74. Butch is a fun satire on that over-the-top type. Here in America in the mid-to-late 20th century we had our share of flamboyant (hey, is that where "flaming" came from?) gay gents working in beauty parlors; many of them went by names like "Mr. Billy", "Mr. Dennis", or "Mr. Larry" for some reason. I'm gay but I never felt the calling for styling ladies' hair. I was more into cooking thanks to Julia Child's show on public television in the late 70's ... although I didn't pursue it as a career. But I digress. Thanks for the review.

Why consider the critics Edward Lionheart to be a bad actor? I think it's not really the problem, that he is to bad at acting, but he is to old fashioned for the time. In the early seventies modern director's theatre was state of the art, but he still holds on doing only Shakespeare plays and I think he is not only acting but also responsible for the complete most likely traditional productions. (Like the cuttings from the silent movies in the intro.) His public still love that, but the the critics, who have seen to much of the traditional plays in their lives, are bored to death when they have to write a review about this, so he gets only bad ones. If he would have played some roles in modern theatre, or would produce Shakespear in a more modern way, the opinions from the critics about him would have probably much better. (Vincent Price makes fun of himself, as he was often criticized, that he do to much campy classic horror movies.) So in his revenge he just execute what the critics always wanted: Shakespeare in a modern way - but unfortunatly the critics have "vitally" important roles in his stagings. :-) Best line at the end of the film from the chief critic Devlin: "But of course he was madly overacting as usual, but you must admit, he did know how to make an exit."
