The Funhouse (1981) movie review | Tobe Hooper

When friends on a double date decide to spend the night in a travelling carnival after hours they find themselves hunted by a killer. Not your typical 80s slasher movie; trust Tobe Hooper to give us something a little weirder.

"A bubble of madness," "a locus of evil" -- yes!

My favourite Tobe Hooper film. (There, I’ve said it). Still remember my first viewing at home on a pan and scan CIC VHS purchased tape. Turned off the living room lights and subjected both my parents to this fantastic phantasmagorical fairground ride into madness. (The Dean Koontz novelisation adds more meat to the bone in terms of backstory and motivations and is certainly worth a read). Also remember the glorious poster tagline - ‘Pay to get in, pray to get out’. Would love to watch this on a big cinema screen one day.

Oh you had not seen The Funhouse before? Love this movie, it parallels TCM quite a bit but still feels fresh. Great setting, great characters great story, glad to hear you liked it.

Excellent review as always grumpy Andrew, I’ll have to put this one on my must watch list. You have great enthusiasm for these movies, I really wouldn’t describe you as grumpy at all!

I spun my DVD copy many MANY times...remember discovering it as a kid in the 80s on TV...True, there's something very unique about it.

Tobe Hooper did a fantastic job on directing this 80's hidden gem horror movie. 😀👍

Gosh, I’m really surprised you missed this. Especially with the legendary Tobe Hooper attached to it. Along with the original ‘My Bloody Valentine’, those were two of my faves back in the day.

Genuinely surprised you hadn't seen this. I came to it quite late (maybe 3 or 4 years ago) and really enjoyed it. The atmosphere is terrific. For me this might just be his 2nd best movie after Texas Chainsaw.

Loved Funhouse. I remember seeing it on cable when I was younger and I ended up buying the blu ray version. I've always thought that Tobe Hooper was one of those directors that didn't get the credit that he deserved. This is a movie with a simple premise and sometimes those turn out to be some of the best movies. Quick question. Do you have any info on The Salems' Lot re-make? I've heard so many stories, it's getting pushed back and there's another story that says they're scrapping it altogether. The original Salem's Lot was a masterpiece. I'd love to see what they could do with a re-make, especially if they take it seriously and put some love into it. Love the videos, keep up the good work!!

The morning atmosphere of that final crane shot instilled a strange melancholy in me watching it. Good movie this.

Here goes 'The Unpopular Opinion'... SPOILERS....I don't like The Funhouse, all because I think the killers are just lame, one is an Albino Vampire, the other is a middle aged carny. I really wish we got something like a killer who isn't revealed until the end, but no. However, I really enjoyed the (very different) Dean Koontz Novelization of this film, which I do recommend, it's not amazing, but the story is way better and very different, no Albino Vampires in it either. Elizabeth Berrige's outstanding Breasts is the icing on the cake of this film for me. Great Review 🎅

I watched this a couple of times back in the 80's, and didn't get on with it at all. That said, I was just a teenager then, so maybe it's time for a reappraisal.

These last two Hooper reviews have really made me want to rewatch 'Eaten Alive' and this one with a fresh eye on intentional artificiality. When I watched these movies on video I was far too young to be thinking about anything like postmodernism or art reflecting its own artifice and just wanted some good killings. Also, I never realised that it was Costanza from 'Amadeus' in this one.

I totally get the youthful viewing experience, and there's nothing wrong with wanting to see a few gory deaths lol! I would have been exactly the same, so it's just dumb luck that I'm looking at these films later in life.

The carnival barkers look similar and are played by the same actor because it implied that they were related through incest.
