The Abominable Dr Phibes (1971) movie review | Vincent Price

Vincent Price in perhaps his finest role: the Abominable Dr Phibes, a genius madman hell bent on revenge. Way before Jigsaw in the Saw movies and John Doe in Seven this high concept serial killer ruled the roost.

But there's only one true Vulnavia! Virginia North! I think I stumbled across this movie late on TV one night, about 30 years ago. It became something of an obsession. All you say is true, thanks for a great review.

This is my favorite Vincent Price film. I was so delighted to see it here in my Notifications. It is a ghastly delight from start to finish. The visual style, the colors, the deaths, the score ... so much fun. I hope anyone who hasn't seen TADP yet will watch the movie before watching this review, because the revelation of Phibes' actual face is superb to witness when you have no knowledge of what he truly resembles. One of my favorite scenes, oddly enough because it is quiet and not frightful, is a short one where Inspector Trout visits the goldsmith (Aubrey Woods, who played the Candy Man from the Willy Wonka film). Woods is hilarious as the proper and condescending character, and I wish the scene had been longer. He treats Trout like a moron, and you get the feeling he is that way with everyone who comes his way. Great review, much appreciated. Your use of the word preposterous hit the nail right on the head; this movie is just that, and that's why I am so fond of it. There's nothing like it, though obviously it has since had its imitators and homages. Thanks.

"A brass unicorn has been catapulted across a London street and impaled an eminent surgeon. Words fail me, gentlemen." That's everything you need to know. Also, the horrible strapline on the poster which was clearly cashing in on Love Story's popularity, and has absolutely bugger all to do with the film still adds to its campy charm. I compared it to Saw and Seven too in my own write up of it, but did I also spy an influence on Sam Raimi's Darkman too? I think I did!

Dr. Phibes, House of Wax, and Theater of Blood all are ancestors to Darkman I think. A good man who is thought to have died in a horrible accident comes back as a master of disguise and picks off each individual who wronged him.

Great review. Vincent Price is my favourite filmstar of all time. This movie is an all-time favourite, that with it's sequel, and 'Theatre Of Blood', I watch at least once a year, and all three still tick all the boxes. I like how Phibes' spree has started before the movie starts - and it's noticeable, for such intricate and vicious deaths, there's very little blood. It's tremendously nasty, in a very inventive way - Dr Hargreave's ("I'm a head-shrinker.") muffled cries as his skull is crushed, slowly, by the frog mask are genuinely unnerving, and yet Dr Whitcombe's death - , impaled by a brass unicorn fired from across the street, is played for laughs as the police try to un- pin him from the door, and find the horn has a left-hand thread, and Whitcombe has to be unscrewed unceremoniously from the door. Price is obviously having a blast - rejecting sprouts for a later murder, for example - and it is obvious that nobody today could replace him, as you said. The great comic artist Jack Kirby actually started a Doctor Phibes comic strip, which looks, as you'd expect, astonishing. Yes, a great, fun movie. The sequel is great, too. I'd like to see both in the cinema, actually.

Such a strange, and lovely movie. There really is nothing like it. And totally agree with you that Price isn't camp, he's only camp when the performance calls for it. He's got many great roles that aren't camp. If you haven't done Theater of Blood yet, I'd love to hear your thoughts on that, and he totally camps it up hard in that one! Which also has a Avengers link just like this one!

I haven't done Theatre of Blood yet...it might fit in nicely after the 2 Phibes movies. It always feels like an unofficial Phibes film to me...and you've reminded me of the first time I watched Theatre of Blood and got into a mix up with Blue Velvet. I may have to tell that story.
