My wife is a librarian and she has given a whole new perspective on what it takes to actually preserve knowledge and media for future generations. Streaming is by far the most convenient thing, but it drastically reduces our chance that we'll have certain media that exist today. I do think these disc will be amazing for archiving and possibly at-home storage. With that much storage you'd be able to create your own digital library that is curated with the media you currently own. That way it's not stored off-site, but locally for you and your family to enjoy.
Physical media enthusiast here. CD's, DVD's, Blu-rays and 4K Blu-ray's are my jam. Id definitely be interested for sure
The reasons to buy physical media are: 1) you don't need a subscription. 2) you don't need internet connectivity. 3) you get the best, consistent image quality. 4) you don't fear it being removed from online catalog. 5) you better support the maker/artist with a traceable sale rather that a stream (ask the struggling Spotify streaming musician)! 6) Oh, and you potentially keep the original edit which might later be censored or 'changed' (think French Connection, ET or Star Wars).

As someone that works within the home video industry, I want to just say that physical media is still a very lucrative business, primarily because of the collectors, and the ability to turn a simple Blu-ray or DVD release into a limited edition, collectible set
I still buy physical media because streaming doesn't have a lot available and many things dissappear after a while. I also don't trust streaming to stay affordable. Eventually I think streaming will be overpriced and limited on product.

I'll say this until I'm blue in the face: WE DO NOT want to live in a world without physical media or even ownership of art. We cannot let our lives be run by subscriptions. It's A future. Not THE future. We're not going about this right because we're not trying to improve things for people anymore, we're just focusing on pure profit with no regard for customer happiness. It's wrong and I hope we reverse course someday.

Nothing i repeat Nothing could ever Replace Physical Media it gives a deeper mean of having your personal items because u have it
Imagine, the entire MCU on one disc. Shut up and take my money.
I'm younger than everyone interviewed here and while I originally like streaming and VOD for a while more than physical media, the past few years have proven me wrong. Streaming services can remove their library at any time and with VOD the "purchase" you make only gives you a "license" to view the content, not actually own a digital copy. In that way VOD is more like an NFT or a certificate that says you own land on the moon vs. something like an MP3 you used to buy on iTunes. Aka it's a scam and while it's obnoxious when Blu-Rays have included previews, it beats having your content stripped away from you because you only bought a "license" to view a thing vs. an actual copy of the thing. Hollywood is a stagnant dying business for a reason and the sad way it has tried to redefine ownership is yet another sign of that fact. So yeah for the stuff I really care about, I'm going with physical media unless it gets open sourced somehow.
Storage alone won't "save" physical media (it doesn't need "saving"). What WILL drive the demand back up for physical media is the rising cost of watching content on streaming services. Just my .02.
I really do hope they make this beacuse I love physical media.

I will always buy my favorite movies on physical disc cause the quality and sound r just way better than streaming!
One Disc to Rule them All
I just bought the TV series Smallville on Blu ray, it has 10 seasons. I would love it if it were on one single disc I could keep in my player while I binge it.
I love physical media and hearing about a disc that can store tons of shows and movies, it may not be a bad idea.
Now that streaming services are considering putting commercials in their services, physical media is becoming a lot more tantalizing, alongside the benefits to picture and audio quality.
You could have all James Bond, Harry Potter, Star Wars, MCU, Star Trek Movies each on one Disc! 😳
The problem isnt rhat blu rays cant hold enough, the problem is that people would rather stream. No amount of storage would fix that.
If there's hardware for it imagine the potential for the disc. A disc like that could have The Star Wars Saga in premium uncompressed video and audio quality and have all the version available.
As long as it’s scratch resistant, it will be viable.
Why can't we just have DRM-free digital movies? That way you at least have the option to backup and play your movies on whatever device you want, even if you lose access to the account you bought it from, or the movie gets removed from the server, etc. The music on iTunes are DRM-free, video games at GOG are DRM-free. Movies should be the same as well.

Bit rate is king. Why bother making better TVs if all you're going to get is 15Mbs 4K from streaming? Plus, you don't own sh!t if you can't hold it in your hand.
This is kinda what I’ve been saying, I’m a physical media guy, I use digital in tangent with my physical but preferably I’m physical, and what I said could happen because I’m a firm believer that physical media will never actually go away is that we could essentially see a new form of physical media that’s not Blu Ray or DVD be created, that’s what I think will ultimately happen, physical media will always be around just like vinyl, I mean honestly guys, there is no excuse you could give me as to why physical media can’t stick around if vinyl can, but just over time we see it take on a new format, and the idea that we could see stuff like an entire tv series be put onto 1 disc sounds kinda cool, now I’m not quite sure how I would feel about that with movies because I like the separation with those but I could see myself getting onboard with this, this could very well be the next 4K Blu Ray
People seem to forget, and you don't mention it in the show, that physical media are of a way better quality than streaming. The image of course said to be 4k sometimes is in fact much compressed but the biggest difference : even my my dvd of Starship Troopers carries a much better sound than the streaming equivalent. Streaming sound is like mp3 compared to a CD or even better a vinyl. No point in listening to pink Floyd in streaming it just sucks, while listening at it on a good stereo is a great experience.

They should just bring back VHS Cassette tape, those were the days when we go to Blockbuster started renting out videos where we copying them into a blank tape. Man those were good times!

How this will be used depends entirely on how fast the data can be read from the disk. It very well may only be useful for storage and people may even find retrieving information from such a medium to be slow. For example if you can only get 10 megs a minute from it, you might not use it for storage at all. Playing video above 480p would be a stretch, too.
How much would the machine cost that records the disc?

Only problem would be costs. Also read and write speed needs to be better for that format according to an article I read. New media formats always costs a lot.
You can have a whole streaming service on one disc 😂
External Harddrives are insanely expensive, what will this do to the pricess, will this make the 8tb 12tb external drives affordable?
On the Silver Globe is being released on BluRay - one of my absolute faves - I saw its remastered release at Leeds Film Festival years ago and had to track it down on a bootlegged DVD from Greece, but excited to see it on bluray - although it appears it's on KZread now anyway!
I’m definitely a physical media collector. I mostly collect Marvel movies and shows on Steelbook. I respect people who only do digital but I personally like the fact that I own my movies and shows and there’s no chance that a studio will take it down on a streaming service or switch streaming services like how Daredevil went from Netflix to Disney Plus. As cool as this new disc is, I’ll still collect physical media until it dies.
Loved this convo.
Physical media rules!
Physical media is going nowhere. Yes, it has fallen out of favor for casual movie fans, but for the collectors, who have always powered the market, it will continue to hold a market place. Vinyl was thought to be dead but without ANY advancements, it is now outselling CDs.
Maybe not for movies, but if Video Game developers adopted these discs I could see them becoming popular, imagine not having to download for 20 minutes before playing a new game. & if you could program the system to write changes onto the disc? Idk, could be game changing (literally).
I still buy physical and i rip my disc to my NAS and stream through Plex. Best og both worlds. I have the convience of stream but still my physical copy in case soemthing happens.
What is the difference between this and an external hard drive?
I love physical media, but this doesn't move the needle. It might help get the entire run of certain shows on one disc, but even if they put out a James Bond collection mega disc, people will still need to go buy the next James Bond movie when it comes out on blu-ray. Plus, it just doesn't have the access factor; you would need the player, and most devices (tv, laptops) won't have it built in, so you'd have to bring that with you when traveling. I'd rather they come out with a 200 TB thumb drive or portable SSD.
If they let this come to light this will save the gaming industry's massive problem with game downloads taking up most of people's space which in that regard could yes Save physical media😊
That would eliminate one of the main reasons I collect these days. Special packaging and editions for display.
I don't see a 200GB disc as saving the physical media industry, but i like the idea of being able to store, say, an entire HD series on one disc, especially if the oackaging is pretty for display. In general, i haven't bought a physical Blu-ray in years, but i have considered it with an occasional film here and there.

the con for digital far outweighs the pros, especially for videogames with developers telling consumers that they don't own the digital game they paid for, not to mention digital being reliant on a number of things from power to internet connection. if the grid crashes and physical media is gone, that includes books, how are you going to read, teach, etc. this is a case where the advancement of technology in this area trying to replace physical with all digital media is not a good thing.

So I picked a supermarket backed attempt, my thinking was that I doubted they'd go under with such a big backer. But under they went, thankfully they were able to get a different company to take on most of my library. I say most, because a lot of my collection didn't survive and I got a very small number of "credits" as compensation. Since then, I have slowly bought that entire library on DVD & Blu Ray. Now I'm converted back to physical only and will never trust a big online company to keep all my media forever.
