Nolan was talking about streaming and he’s 100% right. Disney Plus is dropping shows off the face of the earth. Mike Flanagans Hush is off Netflix and no where to stream legally. Also, for what it’s worth, losing discs isn’t an issue if you keep your collection organized. It’s all up to you and how much care you want to put into movie collecting.

Check your facts John Campea, because there are people that buy whole seasons of shows on iTunes and they get deleted. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it doesn't happen to others. When you purchase a digital TV show or movie, you are not actually buying the show or movie itself. You are purchasing a license to watch the show or movie. This means that the content owner (i.e. the studio or distributor) has the right to remove the show or movie from your library at any time, for any reason. There have been many cases of this happening over the years. So get your facts straight.

Physical movies stay on your shelf when you are not using them, so you have to go out of your way to lose them. I've become a huge physical media enthusiast over time, esp since the pandemic. I'm totally with Nolan on this. And it isn't just the possibility of something being deleted. Streaming has the ability to edit existing media. For instance, The Office has an episode or two where certain scenes have been adjusted / removed... However, I own the blu ray collection of The Office and the scene is intact as it was when it originally aired. One last point--streaming compression, for both music and movies, take away from the final product. For instance CD / vinyl quality is MUCH better than spotify / apple streams. The same goes for blu-ray / 4K UHD. Your digital provider might say "4K UHD" but it is compressed, visually and sonically, due to it being streamed. A 4K stream can't compare to actually viewing something on a 4K disc.

The problem is that you're relying on an external source to play your video. And that's dependent on if they still have the rights to play that video on their platform. At some point, the movie can be removed and / or moved to another platform that we then have to subscribe to as well. It just adds up and becomes annoying to us as consumers.

Anyone who's watched his movies on disc know that the quality is second to none. He really puts in a lot of work into the presentation and it's well worth the money for both the video and audio quality. The bitrate on 4k discs is just insane and streaming quality is a fucking joke in comparison. Tenet's disc is reference-level and I have no doubt Opp's disc will be exceptional. This video hilariously misses the point and passion behind Nolan's statement. He's not talking about it being stolen from you if you purchase it. He's talking about its future life on a streaming service being unreliable. It's funny watching a video like this right after Stuckmann's "The Future of Film - Why I'm Worried" video where he literally highlights an example of a Netflix film, Mike Flanagan's HUSH, being available absolutely nowhere, NOT EVEN NETFLIX. In a day and age where a studio is literally cancelling completely finished movies with the incentive of a tax return, is it really that bad to push for physical media, still without question the best quality money can buy and an option that will be permanently yours to own? Also, not taking proper care of your belongings is no one's fault but your own John. I have DVDs from pre-2000 that still work just fine. Now is it less convenient than having a digital library? Sure. But losing discs and getting them scratched isn't anyone else's fault but the owner's. And with the hardware behind blu-ray and 4k discs, it's very hard to scratch them. You have to be intentionally trying to mess up a disc to scratch one.

3:28 John, but it DOES happen. Companies having access to digital does lead to them being able to limit or restrict them! Of course it doesnt happen as often in movie cases, although, people in the comments have been bringing up examples like Hush, but look at video games for example. Xbox 360 marketplace is shutting down next year, and with that many games that were released digital only, are going to be lost - many games and dlcs for them have been delisted already, which makes buying them impossible. Not to mention, that in licence agreement of these digital services it is stated that you are not buying a film/game but licence to use it, within platform you purchase it at. And while it might not be propable, that amazon goes out of business tomorrow, and shut down everything, restricting access to your bought VOD, lets be honest here - there have been plenty of smallet platforms, which offered vod content, and shut down. If the platform you have bought movies on shits the bed YOU CANT ACCESS "YOUR" BOUGHT FILMS. Its as easy as that. Losing your physical media due to your neglegience, is not the same as losing access to vod you paid for, because million dollar company said so.

Take for example on of my favourite movies of all time Jaws, I like to watch this at least once a year alongside Close Encounters, Alien etc they are the movies I will always return to from now until I die. I can tell you know these movies I just referenced can come and GO whenever Netflix please, for a few month they are there the next they are not and I don't know when they will come back. Luckily I have these films on Blu-Ray so yes Nolan is 100% correct, if you want to watch a movie and not have it taken away from you physical media is still the best format for home viewing. Also I have had my internet ruin countless movies because of buffering issues if my internet is weak, never had that issue with Blu-Ray ever. The argument for digital is honestly so weak it makes me wonder why it caught on in the first place.

While the verbiage was unfortunate, the dialog was considered essential to fully understand the character. Only the Blu-ray contains the complete theatrical cut.

You do not own streaming. They are all glorified rentals. At any point, a licensing agreement could expire, a tax write off can happen, the streaming service decides a title isn’t performing well and removes it from their library, or the internet servers for whatever reason just aren’t working that day.
