After seeing The Creator I think we've reached a point where you can do a very good mix of both, practical locations and extras and actors who can act against each other and not have to be covered in blue dots and still have the option of turning them into something alien after editing. if smart about it, it's a rare case of having your cake and eating it too

My idea for an alien tv-series is as follows: It takes place just before the events in the first alien movie and happens on a planet near where the nostromo spaceship is shipping ore. Weyland-Yutani is on the planet and have terraformed it for years, when they discovers a cave with lots of xenomorph eggs. One of them get's infected and a xenomorph is born. It turns out to be a queen, and a lot of the Weyland-Yutani humans are infected and then a war breaks out. All the humans on the planet are wiped out and only a few manage to escape in a spaceship. Then they nuke the planet from orbit. Then Weyland-Yutani regrets the decision and a hunt for the xenomorph begins. They get a tip that there's a crashed spaceship on lv426 and sends the robot Ash on the Nostromo spaceship. But they are informed that the mission has failed and that Nostromo has gone missing. Then Weyland-Yutani get's a tip about an xenomorph on Fiorina161 and sends a team of researchers there. They finds a surviving prisoner that is impreagnated and a queen is born. Weyland-Yutani then wants to use the xenomorphs on the planets where the engineers are located because they want the technology to seed planets with life. They also want the elixir that provides humans with prolongued life. After they have managed to give birth to a flock of xenomorphs, they drops them on an engineer planet and causes everyone of them to die. Then they get hold of the blue elixir that gives prolongued life. But several ships with engineers that where away from their planet when Weyland-Yutani wiped the population out, pursue them and manages to get the elixir back, but gets trapped on the planet where both parties crash. Then a battle takes place and the crew from Weyland-Yutani gets the elixir that gives them prolongued life for thousands of years, but they are now trapped on the planet, with no means to get anywhere. But then they see a light aproaching, but is the spaceship friends or foes ? It turns out it is the engineers and after a battle they gets hold off the blue elixir once again, and that gives the cliffhanger for a second season that we must wait several years to see???

If you want to make a scary movie, as Fede Alvarez seems to want to do with Alien: Romulus, then it makes sense to go more practical than digital. Because at the very least, you want the actors to be conveying fear through their performances, But that is going to be made more difficult, and less convincing, if they are reacting to a tennis ball in front of a green screen. They are having to use their imaginations to scare themselves, rather than being afraid in any meaningful way. They are trying to be afraid, but their subconsciousness are telling them there's nothing to be afraid of. It's the difference between the Jeep attack scene in Jurassic Park and the Indominus/Raptor fight in Jurassic World. Both Sam Neil and Ariana Richards were able to convey fear more convincingly, because there was a full size animatronic T-Rex in front of them. Whereas in Jurassic World, the two kids were essentially reacting to nothing. It's easier for an actor to show fear when the scary monster is actually in front of them rather than when it's in their heads.

I would bet you would be surprised how many effects you believe were practical, are really CGI and you just don't know it is. These days, CGI is so good, that studios can just claim it's all practical when it's far from it. Because a lot of bad CGI has rubbed a lot of the audience the wrong way, it has become taboo to the point where studios simply lie about using it. They put pressure on their crew to highlight the use of practical, but they are just telling you what you want to hear. They think saying this will create the best buzz for their movie. You would be amazed at how much practical elements simply end up being replaced by CGI ones and you would never have guessed.

I feel like Alien 3 should've focused on the Weyland-Yutani corporation. There was an opportunity there to wrap the movie series as a trilogy. Alien 1 - dealing with one alien Aliens - dealing with a horde of aliens Alien 3 alternate - dealing with the source of the problem - the Company. THEY were the big trouble-makers in the first two movies. THEY wanted the Xenomorph. THEY screwed things up. So Ripley dealing with them should've been the big finale. agreed. the way the camera would track the facehuggers and latch on had that fake cartooney feel to it that you see in every heavy CGI movie. if you replay those facehugger swarms slowly it looks completely fake.

@@roof1975 The topic is about the director boasting it's 'All Practical Sets And Creatures' and what they showed on the trailer was not that. What would you like me to do? Say "gEeZ whIZ gUyS, tHosE cGi FaCeHuGgEeRs aRe pRaCitAl eFfEcTs"

Practicals are largely for close-ups however practical is not really a cost effective thing. Beyond that green and blue screens have all become obsolete thanks in part to virtual production

Enough with the bragging about practical effects. Visual effects artists ARE ARTISTS

Blind much? The trailer is a CGI shit fest, the hoard of face huggers looks like a game.. stop kidding yourself. I'm not saying its bad, I hope its good I'm a huge fan. But what Fede says and what we can see with our eye's is not the same. Lets hope the movie is better

All we know is that he didn't want to show anything of the actual plot or dialog in the trailer. That's why what we see is pretty vague, other than the brief shot of cgi facehuggers and a facehugger dong being pulled out.

Oy, I'm not from the 70, I've been through the 80s 90s I want my fucking CGI. I'm tired of all these little bits here and little bits there of the Aliens. Time to bring it on fully now. No more boring shit. Why do they keep employing these clowns who keep living in the retro past??

The Extra Terrestrial Ride at Magic Kingdom literally traumatized me as a child. I had PTSD from it, that’s not even a joke. Silly to think about now because I’m sure I would love it as an adult, but as a child, it was next level terror.
