3D is also a huge hassle for those of us that normally wear prescription eyeglasses too.
Dredd was great in 3D. I keep my 3D tv around just for that movie
3D hurts my eyes. Never again.
I love and miss it. Theaters killed it. I own a 2016 lg OLED that has 3D (uses the plastic glasses too, no battery) and it's a breathtaking image with the right 3D movie. I have a large collection and I'm hoping the TV survivesong enough to show my daughter 3D when she's old enough. The tech got great RIGHT at the end and it stinks

Wait, modern 4K tvs support 3D? Which oled do you recommend?
The best 3D experiences i've ever had was seeing The Way of Water and the reissue of the original Avatar in Dolby Cinema 3D. A shame AMC never trots it out for anything that isn't a Cameron film, because it blows Real D 3D and IMAX 3D out of the water.
The best 3D experiences i've had was seeing Coraline. For me, in animations, 3D is fine, but in live action it's really bad.
"I wish I knew how to quit you 3D.."
I’ll paraphrase something Christopher Nolan said about 3D which I couldn’t agree more with. When you make a film, your shots should have a 3 dimensional quality about them anyway, because the whole point is that you’re trying to immerse your audience into your story, if you do it right then your visuals will seem palpable on their own merit.
No joke, if everyone had seen Ant-Man 3 in 3D, that movie would have been more highly regarded. It solidified any questionable CGI, and brought the Quantum Realm to life. An edible is also highly recommended…😅

3d is great when used on the objects of the movie and not the characters. Plus it depends NOW if its Dolbyed or Imaxxed.
3D is a wonderful medium. Lee is right about theatres not being prepared however that is true across the board with 2D as well as 3D.
What happened to the stream during this segment today?
I hoarded some 3D Blu-rays from a resell store to watch on PSVR 1. Dredd, Avatar, Mad Max Fury Road, and Pacific Rim were great in the format. Now we mostly get these lazy, pointless post conversion 3D releases so they can charge more for tickets.

Anyone know what happened to today’s show? The livestream stopped all of a sudden.
Anybody watched Bloody Valentine? The 3D effects in that movie was mind blowing!
Terminator 3D at universal studios was a masterpiece. As a kid I was blown away
the only place 3d works is in vr where you literally have a separate screen for each eyeball. trying to do tricks with polarised lenses just looks like shit.
When 3D came out I was well on the bandwagon - got myself a 3D tv when I was a student and it was the biggest purchase I had made at the time… we had 3D watch parties… I still have loads of 3D Blu rays including Life of Pi… went to see most films (that were designed for it) in 3D… hated rushed conversions… but yeah I’m defo over it now haha give me a crisp 4K 2D picture over 3D any day of the week
Love 3D , each to their own
LIFE OF PI is one of the best 3D movie’s all time. I still have my Samsung 3D TV that I purchased in 2014. When will glasses-free 3D become a trend?
When I saw Superman Returns 3d in 2006, it was very well done. Only certain parts were in 3d, and there was a visual cue on the screen for when to put your glasses on, and the rest of the movie when not in 3d, was great! My eyes were never sore etc. But that was the ONLY movie that I truly enjoyed the 3d experience 🎬 🍿
Don't care. I love 3D. I love VR. I will continue to acknowledge their shortcomings, but I enjoy how immersive they are and I hope the technology continues to improve over time. 🤷♂️
Ultimately it depends on the movie and how they incorporate 3-D into the movie. If the movie is made for 3-D then it works very well. Like with the first avatar the 3-D was awesome. Some of my favorite 3-D movies that really did well with pushing the format, not only with the depth, but with also the in your face element, your very own ministerial I thought did very good job handling the format, gravity very very well done Pacific rim, ready player, one and last two transformer movies that they made in 3-D were also very well done Doctor Strange the original bingers movie and infinity war did very well with 3-D But the other avengers movies didn’t seem to do much good with it jumper rampage pretty good but I’d say that’s probably the extent of it. There are a few other movies that weren’t too bad but they didn’t really push the envelope Tron legacy they did that movement 3-D, but there was only certain scenes that actually was filmed with the format.
I took some people to see their first movie in 3D. I didn't think it was anything special for most of the movie, except for one earth shattering moment. One action moment looked beyond amazing. It made it worth it. The movie was animated and especially bright in general, so tinted glasses hardly bothered me or anyone. There's definitely still room for improvement, like can't they figure a way to make non tinted glasses? In this day and age? Really?
And with that said I still think we’ll see 3D come back around but it will be different, I think it will be more in line with Apple’s spatial video. Not sure what format it will come in whether it will be MR, VR or a theatre experience but I do think it will be another thing that comes round again in some way… just like how there’s been multiple attempts at Cloud gaming, then it would go away and come back again On the topic of 3D things, the experience I remember blowing me away was the 3D Terminator ride
The last 3D movie I saw was Godzilla x Kong in IMAX and I just realise that it didn’t add much on the experience. The IMAX screen did, but not the 3D.
Like all cinema experiences, 3D is a choice now, not compulsory. Like imax, 4DX, Superscreen, Atmos enabled, digital projection, and Screen X. Only looks good when it’s filmed in 3D. I did have a Panasonic GT50 plasma and it was incredible. There is no doubt James Cameron is the only director, who knows how to use it (maybe Scorsese too). Just like Nolan and Denis V seem to be the only directors who know how to use IMAX. It just depends on who is utilising the tech for the art to feel enhanced for the right reasons. Avatar: Way of water looked insane. I get some people, like with VR, suffer health issues, have glasses or vision issues, so I can understand that crows. But also, most 3D bring nothing if it’s not utilised, so most 3D films suck. And John needs to read the article again. And Lee doesn’t hate 3D, he hates the experience the average movie goer has to endure, not the medium itself.

Campia I doubt will correct himself here. Dude seems to have an agenda with this video. I never really jived with his opinions anyway and he presents stuff in such a disingenuous way to me especially on this topic.
I still (happily) have my 4k LG 65" C6. It's a passive 3D OLED, i.e., it doesn't need batteries (the theater REAL3D glasses work perfectly with it), there's no shutter effect, and the 3D looks fantastic. TV manufacturers messed up by forcing consumers to use active shutter 3D at home; the glasses are bulky and uncomfortable, and the batteries don't last more than a week. Life of Pi in 3D looks freaking beautiful. 🤩

I prefer my projection set up with IR active Xpand glasses I got off Amazon. Some glasses are Bluetooth, but my projection doesn't do that as I later found out.
Two decades ago I saw a documentary in IMAX 3d with active lenses and it was glorious. The cheap polarized lenses they use in movie theaters now are useless crap. It is a waste of a theater screen.
I remember watching captain EEO at Disneyland. The theater was designed for it. I think that was the difference. It was cool to see. You could touch the objects
My first 3D movie was Nightmare on Elm Street 6 Freddys Dead! the 3D was soo good we watched the movie twice just to see the 3D again.
My first experience with 3D is when back in the day they formated the movie Creator from the Black Lagoon into 3D. We had to get our glasses from 7-Eleven. Needless to say it didn't work it was trash. The year was 1977.
Aquaman (first movie) is awesome in 3D; especially for the trench scene. Avatar movies, 3D is amazing throughout. 3D for any of the Transformers movies? Yeah, it was a gimmick at best.
I think 3d stays alive from people like me and this other guy in the theater that had to go get 3d glasses after realizing it was a 3d movie
3D makes the screen half the size.
I watched Rio in 3D, it made that film better. I think it should only be done for some animated films. Otherwise it shouldn’t exist.
I always enjoyed 3d bluray, untill my tvs went out of service. Never quite enjoyed it at the Cinema. Also sold my 3D Blu-rays as a result. They were not worth anything 😂. They were quite expensive too
This is very random… I thought 3D movies were dead long before the pandemic happened, we all know how bad they were.
Only 3D film I loved watching in that format was avatar 2
3D in apple vision pro is amazing but yes tech just is't there yet.
I truly wish that those that make anti-3-D statements would have more exposure to good 3-D instead of the cheap version most theaters use. Dolby theaters have the correct brightness level to where the picture it looks the same as it would without glasses. They use more expensive glasses in the image in 3-D is exceptionally clear with a great deal of depth. Before saying that 3-D is a bad format perhaps you should try seen it in a good one.
I like 3D movies and I’m glad it’s coming back with new VR headsets. I wouldn’t have watched Avatar 2 if I couldn’t see it in 3D and personally I think watching the first one without 3D is a waste. 3D won’t disappear completely, it will migrate to VR where you don’t have to compromise picture quality or put on tinted glasses.
I agree that the 3D in regular theaters sucks but I find the IMAX3D is much better.

@@brianng8350 Not just the glasses. The screen is lot bigger and the colors are brighter. The Real3D is dark and you can't always see what is going on but the IMAX3D is immersive and makes the movie experience better.
I think it was a mistake forcing directors to make movies in 3D. Most didn't care and had them converted afterwards which very few people liked. The only ones who I have ever heard or read from being enthusiastic about 3D are James Cameron, Ang Lee and Peter Jackson. Three just aren't enough to make that technology viable on the market.
In order for 3D films to look their best you MUST view from a laser projector - contrast and brightness are perfect, beautiful picture. The TCL Chinese Theater and El Capitan in Hollywood both have very high end laser projectors, movies like 1st Pacific Rim (Del Toro used Cameron's 3D cameras for it) , Force Awakens, Guardians Of The Galaxy films, Black Panther, 1st Doctor Strange, Infinity War & Endgame were awesome in IMAX with Laser 3D @ The Chinese Theater. I understand not everyone has access to that theater, its dual laser projectors are some of the best in the US. Shame more theaters across the country dont have the same caliber of projectors, it makes a huge difference in regards to 3D, hence the bad wrap it gets when not projected properly.
Brave take- about 15 years too late
If Avatar, the gold standard of 3D gives me a headache and lot of eye strain, it doesn't work for me. Even if it didn't, it doesn't add anything of value to the movie if you ask me.

My first 3d movie is spy kids 3d on dvd 2 disc one 2d and another one is 3d and come with 3d glasses my first 3d movie in the theater is green hornet
Seen Tron Legacy in 3D at theater It was cool
Best 3D experience was Gravity in IMAX. Worst 3D experience was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Mutant Mayhem.
3D is good only for some moving with big action sequences movies with big monster creatures coming at you but if you don't pay attention to the 3D it has no effect.
I agree
Look let’s be honest here, unless it’s Avatar, 3D should die off (& I don’t think many people would be sad to see it go)
Oh shit
A big reason I don’t like 3D is for one as someone who already wears glasses it’s hard to then have to put another pair on top of my normal ones, like after all these years they definitely should’ve taken that sort of thing into consideration already, but the biggest reason I don’t like it is the same reason I think stuff like D-Box is dumb, and that is that when I’m watching a movie I wanna just watch a movie, to just sit there and become immersed in the story and characters, I don’t wanna feel like I’m riding an amusement park ride
Honestly, as Lee suggests, the issue isn’t 3D in and of itself, it’s the presentation of said 3D. If it’s done well, it’s a PHENOMENAL experience. I’ll never forget Avatar: The Way of Water’s IMAX 3D laser presentation, I truly felt I was in Pandora (sounds over the top but I really did). The problem is the presentation, in that unless it’s laser projected, the image will be incredibly dim and look muddy and garbage. And for that reason, I understand why most people think it’s trash. The average movie goer doesn’t know the difference between normal and laser projection, and there lies the problem. If all theatres projected properly, 3D would be a lot more successful, and James Cameron wouldn’t have to single handedly keep the format alive!
@thereelsociety6487

@@TheMediaHoarder Yeah it’s hard when the theatre industry is still struggling, so investing in proper projection is very costly, I can see both sides. I was very fortunate that I was on holiday in Japan when Avatar 2 came out, so I went out of my way to go to one of the best in the country to see it in IMAX 3D High Frame Rate laser, and it was one of the most beautiful presentations of a movie I’ve ever seen. But then I came home and watched Avatar 3D re-release on a local theatre, and it was muddy and gross. Such a shame!!

Funny thing is that the constant comic book style split screening in the 2003 Hulk was far worse than 3D
I think the evolution of 3D will move to entirely be in AR/VR headsets. If they can incorporate 3D on the new Vision Pro, that experience could be incredible. But the theater 3D experience is pointless
Here's the thing - old 3D already had it's issues - especially when not watching it in 3D. New 3D - it still seems to have lesser versions of those issues in terms of some scenes seeming to be almost built for it and standing out (though could also be a product of the poor quality of CGI these days movies have in them cause of how studios are) and the like. But the thing is with newer stuff where it's less about popping out and more about lacking possibly a better word 'depth' - it gives me a headache and I see no real difference - other than it looks weird. Like, outside of scenes where the matte painting, green screen, and other smoke and mirrors is really obvious - normal films don't look any different than reality in that regard to me, when you add new 3D to it - it's more like what you see in some early Playstation/2/N64 games where the objects just look... out of place. Like in trying to make it more 3 dimensional and real they made it look even more fake.
Avatar and Beowulf the 2 3d movies that made sense.
I like 3D
Loved the Jaws 3D shout out 😂 that might have been my first 3D movie as a kid as well. I recently saw Friday the 13th part 3 for the first time in 3D at Alamo drafthouse and enjoyed it very much. However, I agree 3D needs to just go away at this point.
Fully agree with him... I hate 3D movies so bad. All they do is give me a headache.
While I somewhat agree, I think Life of Pi and Dredd were elevated by this
Misleading hook/clickbait. You know Ang Lee specifically slammed the presentation (not the medium) which has always been the problem. If it’s not IMAX 3D or Dolby 3D in theaters, it’s really inconsistent and usually too dim either bc theaters are conserving the PJ or the damn thing’s been around since Avatar 1. You never mention Apple Vision Pro and how Disney in particular has been bogarting/vaulting its 3D releases for AVP. Apparently it’s an amazing experience (HFR/VFR 3D in 4K for Avatar 2), but too dam expensive. Meanwhile I can load 3D ISOs I rip from my own collection onto my 512gb Quest 3 and watch them on airplanes. Waiting for streaming services to stop saving all the 3D exclusive streaming for AVP… For the passive glasses, those were perfected in 2016-2017 with 4K OLED FPR passive TVs. I have like 10 different ways to watch 3D (gave away my 2010 active-shutter Panasonic to family recently so I’m down one), but my crown jewels are my LG OLED55C6P (bought in 2017 and only used for movies and some gaming, at 6K hours), a practically brand-new LG OLED55E6P I bought for $700 last year, and a worn-in but still glorious LG OLED65E6P. All have DolbyVision 60hz and FHD passive 3D that literally uses RealD theater glasses. I have drawers full of those glasses; sometimes when I go to see a new 3D movie (if it isn’t in IMAX or Dolby) I bring a pair from home and just pocket the unopened pair. My point here is: if more TVs had been made like this, and theatergoers had been made aware they could just take the stupid glasses home with them and use them on their highly versatile passive OLEDs that look incredible in 2D too, maybe home 3D would’ve had a chance. But alas only a few models were made like this, then LG and Sony gave up and stopped making them with the filter layer in early 2017. Even now there are a bunch of PJs including UST that do 3D (usually with DLP-link rechargeable glasses though). IMO passive 4K TVs were the answer, but they barely gave ‘em a chance. Ah well! I’ll be watching and playing in 3D for years to come regardless of whether 3D makes a comeback or VR dies off. PS: Most replaceable-battery 3D glasses used CR2032s, which are really common.
Raquel Welch should be in 3D. 3D is my apartment number.
I respect your opinion John, but I happen to fall into the small minority. I LOVE 3D!!! And I’ve come to learn that Cinemark projectors are the best for 3D. I stopped going to imax because of the dim image that only got worse over time. I’ve never had that issue with Cinemark, be it XD or standard REALD 3D. The image is always crisp and bright. I’m officially a loyal Cinemark member because my local AMC and premiere cinemas always fall short of the Cinemark experience. Just last night I watched Godzilla X Kong again in 3D and I had a blast with the 3D. I don’t so much need stuff coming at me, I just truly enjoy the depth of field effect, and when paired with a good sound system that shakes the floor, well, that’s the feeling I want from the cinemas. I loved dune part 2, but I wish it had been in 3D 😂😂
Ang Lee: Hates 3D. Loves High Frame Rate.
To this day, the only film to get it perfect was Jackass 3D
Dolby 3D is awesome. No more dim muted picture. Avatar 3D remastered was awesome.
3D only works with the right director and the right film. very few directors use it right. i personally only have had 3 good experiences with it in the last 15 years: Avatar 1, Avatar 2, and Jackass 3D. eventually 3D will die and cinema will be better for it.
I vehemently disagree. Stereoscopic 3-D is the best. People have misconceptions about 3D. It's not about visuals popping out of the screen like the 80's movies like Friday the 13th 3D, where they purposefully make items break the 4th wall. It's about depth of field. You can see the different sizes and distances compared to each other. The best 3D movies I've seen Jurassic Park, Star Wars Saga (1-6), Zootopia, Transformers 1-3, Jumanji. 3D would be the only reason I will return to the theaters to watch a movie.
The only movie I’ve ever seen in 3D was The Green Hornet in 2011. It wasn’t worth it, and I only did it because the theater near my place was only showing it in 3D. When it was the trendy thing in Hollywood, I avoided 3D like the plague otherwise.
3D sucked! Always has, always will. I even built my own 2D glasses with two identical lenses (during the time where all movies were only available in 3D).
3D is a cash grab imposed on the consumer...felt this way from the get go.. it makes movies suck... distracting..my eyes don't want to go that way. Headache inducing. No one wants it... especially post converted crap. Avatar was literally the only good 3D movie
I love 3D. I just watched Godzilla King of Monsters in 3D this past weekend. I own around 150 more 3D Blu-ray's
Wow, I usually enjoy your content, but I have never known you to take something so far out of context. Ang Lee loves 3D, and loves the medium, he says that right there in the article. “I refuse… to blame it on the medium”. He’s just disillusioned by the incompetence of the exhibition ecosystem beyond the studio. The best way to see 3D these days is in cinemas with laser technology and those who guarantee a minimum brightness standard (Dolby & IMAX). It’s sad that now, both at home and in theatres, technology has come to the point where it’s possible to have flawless 3D presentations, but because of the ineptitude of the initial rollout, people’s opinions of 3D have soured. And not just people with first hand experience, we now have a generation where they haven’t first hand experienced 3D but because their parents or friends tell them it’s bad, they parrot it out as their own opinion. 😞

I know it's a matter of opinion if the director doesn't like 3D. But I don't believe anything he says. to me his opinion doesn't hold face value. James Cameron made so many awesome films to his name. More than Lee. and Cameron is a huge fan of 3D. Cameron knows everything about it. How it should be done during principle photography and not post production. The man is simply an expert. He would completely shoot down everything he said. Camerons opinion holds weight because of the legend film maker he is

Speaking of opinions, that's all your comment is too. Your personal opinion. You don't know who Ang Lee is? He's an Academy Award winning filmmaker, and knows 3D extremely well. Lee along with James Cameron has championed 3D, for many years. Ang Lee even utilized High Frame Rate 3D. For someone who says he loves 3D, it's odd you weren't aware of Ang Lee or his work. By the way, I have a home 3D projection setup too. I enjoy it. But that's not what Ang Lee is talking about. His comments largely focus on the theatrical exhibition of 3D, and his frustrations with how theatrical 3D was mostly always poorly presented. Aside from Laser 3D cinema projection, I agree with Lee. At home, we can calibrate our displays for 3D. But not in a movie theater. Cinemas have largely always ignored proper 3D projection. And most filmmakers likely couldn't even control the 3D conversions, of their films because the studios usually outsourced that work.

@@christopherbrown5023 of course I know who Ang Lee is, I have his Life of Pi in 3D and looks magnificent. I have an impeccable set up using a Benq 3D cinema quality vp with a 50,000 to one contrast ratio. Have had no problem in Australia viewing 3D in cinemas.
