CMMG 6.5 Grendel VS 5.56 | Which One Is Better?

CMMG 6.5 Grendel VS. 5.56 | Which one is better? What do you guys think, which would you choose if you could have only one? Today Joel compares the AR in 5.56 with a nearly identical AR in 6.5 Grendel. Helping new shooters understand their choices. What is each one good for? Which one is better? Home defense, predator hunting, long range competition, etc? Enjoy.

I think that the 6.5 Grendel is one of the best all around calibers for an AR15 platform. I wished that it would have caught on much more than it has. Also the more ammo that is produced and sold in any caliber the lower the cost of that ammo.

Been a Grendel fan since about 2009. Anyone that’s built one doesn’t have to ask the question posed on this video.. in fact no one would chose an AR10 in 308 either after using a 6.5 grendel. I have a bunch of rifles and by far the most fun to shoot is an AR15 chambered in 6.5 Grendel. I built mine with a 20” lilja barrel (got in on the first AR barrel buy he made in Grendel) with an Alexander Arms side charging upper and matched lower receiver set.

I have one of each. 16" 556 store bought and 18" 6.5 Frankenstein. Built a 10.5" 556 for home defense The 556 is par none out to 350 meters. Past that the Grendel is great out to 800. Could go further but I have a limited distance range. Now I could throw the dice and hit the power line cut, but...... Wish you would have used a 20" Grendel barrel, as that's an upgrade I'm looking to possibly make. To all of you thinking of getting into the 6.5 , be careful of where you get your mags. There are two main makers, one works fine while every mag I got from the other needed to have some work done to it. Rounds kept hitting the front lip when chambering. I found that getting 762X39 mags for an AR work great. Haven't had a round jam on the front lip yet. Grendel uses a necked down 762 case so no problem there. There's also a third option, called a 'multimag'. As to ammo, yes Virginia, the Grendel costs more to shoot. Pre freak out was @75 cents a round, lucky now if I can find under a dollar rounds. Whereas I can still get 556 for around 50 - 60 cents a round. Will the Grendel replace the 556 as America's sweetheart? I don't think so. The 556 is the girl next door while the 6.5 is the prep school blonde hottie across the tracks. 762X39 [AR-47} is the tattooed chick from the pool hall, smokin a Camel and drinkin a PBR. She'll give you a ride, but you AIN'T bringin her home to Mom & Dad.

Well done video my friend. Once again thank you for your time people. And your information of the two calibers at hand. Along with your findings, with what could be their best fields of uses. This debate between these two calibers and their usefulness out within the field has been and in some cases still does raise its ugly head, in which one is as good as the other, that the other is a waste of money, shows no real reason for its use, in which the other would not do or give the person the same results. This discussion has been at times a much useless waste of time. Think you again for a well and informative review of these calibers and their best uses in the field. This give the person a much more positive view of what they can expect when using each calibers and in what type of platform to use them in. And what they can now expect from which ever caliber chosen at the time for that platform of uses. Again thank you gentlemen for a well and informative video. Keep them tight.

Light enough but produces .5 MOA at 100 for me. I’m getting about 1” once I get out past 300.

We have a solid amount of field data on the 6.5Grendel with wild game. For wild game we pretty much exclusively shoot the factory Hornady 123gr SST and a majority of the time use a 24" barreled set up because thats what the box data is based on as they use a 24" test barrel for that so its a fast conversion in the field when we need to. I have killed 1x Elk with a 18" barreled upper at 200yds (head shot) and 3 Antelope with the same upper within 200yds as well. The 24" barreled upper has killed 7+/- Elk, 3x Ibex, 2x Barbary Sheep, 1x White Tail, 1x Mtn Lion, 1x Javelina from 150yds to 480yds. My 15yr old son shot a Cow Elk at 480yds (one shot kill - neck shot) for the longest stretch out of the 6.5Grendel, one Ibex was at 436yds and a Elk and Ibex again at 400yds. Someone documented a Cow Moose kill in AK with a 6.5Grendel and either a 18" or 20" barreled upper at 100yds as well with a one shot kill. The 6.5Grendel has a payload and ballistics to pretty much handle most Big Game as long as Shot Placement and Appropriate Distances are followed. Its an incredibly great caliber for youth hunters, small framed beginner hunters, females, and others because its low recoiling, affordable to shoot alot and get very solid consistent hits with and build confidence with for the needed shot placements. In several states its not legal to hunt with a 5.56 but it is with a 6.5Grendel - CO for example requires a .240Cal or larger for Big Game Hunting and thus a 6.5Grendel is legal to hunt Big Game with, NM allows any center fired caliber but your limited in distance and size of game potentially with the 5.56 if you did hunt with it where as the 6.5Grendel can reasonably handle any Big Game animal in NM. We have a YT Channel as well for hunting with ARs and a MeWe Group. Follow along or Join in and contribute pics and info if you are a Hunter using the AR platform

  • @PrecisionRifleNetwork

It really depends on ammo, barrel, velocity, and other things. Roughly speaking however, if you zeroed at 30y, you should have minimal drop at 300y. Doing that though, you’re almost 5” high at 100y. Could cause issues for fast head shots. It’s overall easier to use this method with a standard AR and 5.56. A grendel really should be zeroed at 100y like most other long range rifles. Then just memorize your drop data out to 500 yards or so, and you’re golden.

Grendel is the clear winner, but there's something to be said about ammo compatibility, availability, weight, and size. Outside of hunting 5.56 makes more sense for a shooting intensive mission unless you're a designated marksman and even then you should probably step past the grendel to something a little longer range. There's definitely something special about it though, definitely my favorite round.

Trouble is Grendel is going pretty slow from a 12" bbl, but it keeps that energy well and has better bullet mass for hunting. 6mm arc is even less efficient in a short barrel but has a lot more starting velocity, so a short barrel will still have fantastic velocity, and even 105 gr bullets have excellent BC in 6mm arc. But Grendel has steel ammo.... i love my 18" Grendel but it's effectively a bench gun. After I got a 12" 350 legend I just LOVE that size, so darn handy.

Yes. You need a different bolt head, I’d just buy a dedicated bolt carrier group. You will also need mags.

You got my thumb up mostly because of the beard. But thanks for the rest too. The beard! I bet you have to tell the ladies all the time, "Eh hem, my eyes are up here. Eh hmm." 6.8 spc, though.

haha, my wife likes the beard. I rocked a standard goatee for years before this. 6.8? I haven't shot one of those yet.

Liked the 6.5G but love the 6Arc. Hard to beat the 80g ttsx out to 200 yds and 103 eldx out to 400yds. Sierra 90g have shot the best groups but haven't harvested anything yet with them.

Agree on the -0- for .223/.556. I think that’s aka MPBR. Max pt. blank range

6.5 Grendel is my go-to caliber in ARs. Deer, hogs, 2 legged varminting, I love it. Nothing against 5.56, I love it, but I love the terminal performance of the Grendel at all sorts of distances. I skipped .308 because it isn't as good for anything I need. I may get a 6.5 PRC, but the Grendel is my tactical round preference.

To be more accurate about the whole USMC zero thing: we do sometimes do a 36 m zero, BUT we use the 300 m aiming point in the reticle when doing it (not the center of the reticle). That means it's still a 100 m zero in the end, and we still will usually confirm at 100 and make final adjustments at 100. The 36 m is a means of getting an expedient zero using a well defined aimpoint within the reticle (the 300 m aim point).

Basically 224 flopped. It was launched in the wrong barell twists and was unable to stabilize the 90s. Basically companies rechambered 1:7 223 ar15 barells. It was good with the lighter stuff up to 77s but then it is pointless given a 223 could basically do the same thing. It's since had faster barrels but no one is really interested anymore given the overhyped launch that didn't live up to expectations. Dead caliber for the most part.

@@bmstylee it's not so much a twist rate issue as bad barrels/reamers apparently. Have not seen stabilization issues with the 7 twist ones, unless maybe with the very sleekest 90+grainers like JLK or berger that don't really offer you a whole lot over stuff like the much shorter 90gr SMK, 85.5 HybridTarget, etc
