    Depends on the armor. A few years ago, a piece of one of the last remaining half-proof armor sets was used for an experiment to test modern guns against it. Since half-proof and full-proof armor were designed to counter matchlocks back when guns were first popularized (and are the origin of “bullet proof”). Half-proof was designed to protect against pistols. To the scientists’ shock, the armor was outright *invulnerable* to anything less than a .44 (or was it.45? Meh you get the point) and even then required several shots to the same point on the armor. It was noted that the test did not use all the layers of material the soldier would have worn and would have stopped the bullet completely due to how little energy it had left. There are no full-proof sets around, so they can’t be tested. But, it is thought they’re immune to all small arms weaker than an anti-material rifle and might be capable of ensuring the wearer survives even that. As a result of the experiment, historians renewed their interest in finding out why armor stopped being used. Since it clearly was not due to the rise of guns. And the armor was cheap, common, and quick to produce, so it wasn’t any of the associate problems either. Personally, I think the historians overlooked the obvious: cannons. Not that removing literally bullet proof armor is justified by cannons, but the need for metal and manpower to make cannons and the huge numbers of cannonballs probably competed with the armor. Ultimately, cannons matter far more in battle than body armor.

    To jump from "half-proof can stop pistol rounds" to "therefore we conclude that full-proof can stop any small arms except for anti materiel rifles" is about as smart as claiming "The record for weight lifting without straps is 900 Pounds, therefore the record for lifting with straps must be 4500 pounds". Why would anybody assume that people during medieval times could create a suit of body armor that could stop things which they had trouble stopping during WW1, for example? WW1 trench armor could be pierced by normal rifle rounds of the time, at over 200m distance, right through the thickest part of the plate. Are you claiming that medieval blacksmiths could create plates that could stop those rounds easily, and make those plates cheap and quick? Or did i missinterpret your comment?

    @@alexturnbackthearmy1907 If we are talking about modern - or at least WW1 level - rifle calibers, then no, they could not. Something like a 8mm mauser, with a military powder load, will not be stopped by a medieval armor plate (even something that is as heavy as jousting armor would either fail to stop it, or simply have so much inner spalling that the wearer still dies, regardless of penetration. And jousting armor is impractically heavy for the battlefield.). Again, if armor like that could be made reliably at the time, it would have been used in conflicts like ww1. At least officers would have gotten a working set of armor, to make sure they are not picked off by snipers as easily. And yet, it didnt happen. What does that tell you? Also, medieval armor is in fact very badly shaped to avoid bullet penetration. Medival armor uses round shapes to make sword/melee weapon attacks more likey to glance off. Round shapes however almost ensure that a good portion of bullets hit the target almost dead on (imagine trying to draw a line that goes through the middle of a circle: the line will almost be gurantied to hit the circle 90°, which is the best angle for bullets.). Good shapes for deflecting bullets are angled, not rounded. And medieval armor has very few angled shapes, because its supposed to fit your properly, and humans arent angular.

    I’m honestly impressed with how effective the curved armor is. Though, to the initiated, it should come as almost no surprise, seeing how similar concepts are used on tanks. I’ll mention, another YTer also made use of that concept, and 1/4 inch thick steel managed to deflect just about all but .50 BMG. Save for some hotter loads, I think angled/curved armor/plating may yield some actually interesting testing.

  • @ebreshea

    @ebreshea

    Жыл бұрын

    It's great if you can predict where the shots will be coming from. Any shot that's not directly head-on will reduce the armor's effectiveness. 45 degrees off and the curvature will have no effect. For tanks you can rotate that armor 90 degrees and any shot parallel to the ground will be deflected either into the ground or the sky. For humans, though, that would just deflect it into your chin or your groin (because you can't feasibly get full coverage with that geometry). Late medieval/renaissance armor was rounded to somewhat increase chances of deflection regardless of where it was coming from, though the armor was thicker in the front and especially vital areas. It also had geometry in place to guide arrows away from the neck region, to keep them from being deflected upwards into the helmet.

    @@whatever-hd5vp Stab vests stop a knife stab(almost like its in the name), and most likely a direct sword hit or a long distance arrow. But uhm, there are a lot of gaps in modern armour where you could stab/hit and be lethal, or hit the arms that are mostly unprotected and do a lot of damage. So medieval weapons could easily kill a soldier, if that soldier wouldnt use modern weapons. As soon as there are guns, you would need a whole lot of medieval soldiers to kill a modern one(amount depending on the distance and the weapon used, example: browning M1 with unlimited ammo on a hill 500m away would kill a lot)

    @@tomjongman4797 stab proof vests are designed to stop knifes, if you put them against a halbeard/warpick/poleaxe. Or any other anti-armor weaponry of medieval times any stab proof vests are gonna be destroyed, because it's essentially a modernized gambeson (no need of looking for gaps). Now the bullet proof ones are gonna be an interesting test. He should also get someone that can get the edge alignment right for the test. Ofc a single soldier with a M1 would delete a medieval army, there is a reason guns eventually outclassed any other weapon.

    @@jordicl4325 In this case i was talking about the most "common" weapon people associate with the middle ages which is the sword. The sword would probably have trouble going through a stab vest and wouldnt go trough any higher rated armour as well, but as you said most anti-armour weapons would likely go through a stab vest. As for higher rated armour, it would depend on the material its made from. Steel plates would be thick enough to stop any(?) medieval weapon, however its only on the front and back(most of the time) meaning a stab/cut in any non-protected area will pretty much be fatal(losing an arm,/getting stabbed in your throat will probably kill you). medieval weapons would work better on ceramics since its brittle, it wont go trough the first time but repeated strikes should weaken it enough for a warpick or halberd to go through. same thing regarding weakspots applies tho. For referance a 170Ib longbow could generate about 150J of energy point blanck, generic 9mm FMJ should be around 500J.
