    Great video! If you want to maximize the velocity potential of the 20” without pushing past the SAAMI MAP, it will easily do well over 2500fps with the right powder and most any cup and core in the 120-123gr weight range. Partitions and some of the bonded bullets will limit what you can do with start pressure, so some will be a bit slower, but breaking 2500fps is fairly straightforward with 20” Grendel. The 2 powders that will get you there without chasing max pressure are CFE223 and LeveRevolution. Another powder that will do it is Alliant Power Pro 2000-MR. With a standard cup and core 120-123gr (not bonded), work up with CFE223 in .3gr increments to no more than 31.7gr using Hornady, Lapua, or Starline brass. Some chambers will be limited to 31.0 to 31.2gr if they were cut with a reamer past its correct cutting life. With a real SAAMI chamber with the compound throat and Enfield rifling, I’ve easily past 2500fps even with a 16” Grendel, but my go-to load of 31.2gr is usually in the 2480-2490fps region 15ft from the muzzle. That’s with the 123gr A-MAX loaded to 2.272” COL fed from CProducts mags. My 17.6” Lilja 3R barrel with the same load averages 2490fps at 64˚F. I have tons of factory load data as well out of 22”, 18” AA fluted, 18” LaRue Stealth 2.0, 17.6” Lilja, 16” AA, 16” Lilja, and 12” Faxon 5R barrels. You can also look at the 129gr class of bullets, either the 129gr SST or 129gr Nosler Accubond LR. The ABLR will actually expand down to 1300fps and has a very good BC, very soft construction but bonded so it doesn’t shed a lot of weight and expands dramatically. 129gr Hornady SP and SST are very reliable killers on medium game, but the 123gr SST has probably killed the most deer out of them all. 129gr ABLR will give you the most effective range out of all the bullets in 6.5mm that work well in the Grendel. The Barnes and other lead-free projectiles in the 100-120gr weights will give you the most penetration, followed by any of the bonded bullets. Great little cartridge that hits outside of its weight class on-target, not on your shoulder and sight picture.

    Thank you Sir for the Great comments from you with allot of experience. My data is only gleaned from the 2 rifles shown. I am able to get over 2500fps in the 20 inch with PP Varmint powder and Sierra Pro Hunter 120 grain flat based bullet, with sub moa accuracy and have harvested 3 bucks in 3 shots total. I have experimented extensively with cfe-223 and 123gn. Horn. SST bullets, velocity was great but accuracy wasn't acceptable in my rifles. Thanks again for your input and advice.

    Eh young man very nice video and well put together ...according to Berger bullets there is an increase in velocity with longer barrels anywhere from 25 to 35..40 feet per second.... now about the powders ....on the burn rate chart with pressure...your in the same playing field that all the major manufacturers are in .... I’ve experienced the same this powder that bullet .....etc ..etc..etc...I guess it depends on how much testing one wants to do with powder and bullet and primer combo ......today there are waaay too many choices .....I’ve learned to cut out all the regular powders ...they all work well.....and now I have gone the route of the extreme powders....less variation in velocities and pressure less fluctuation ....like the extreme line in Hodgdon and the new imr powders ..... I’ve also taking in consideration from other reloaders the fact about pressures with different powders ....for semiautomatic and bolt action rifles Less beating up the gun/wear and tear ..and also destroying the brass ....primer pockets ...stretching of the brass etc..etc.......example for my browning rifles I’ll use powders with less pressure examples imr 3031or benchmark...with lighter bullets and when shooting heavier bullets I’ll go h4895....varget .....and I remember reading for 308 semi autos ....nothing slower then imr 4064.....and so far I’ve had great results ....and I’m still chasing that magic load .....it’s fun and a challenge at the same time Eh young man again a well put video ...well spoken ...and nice toys(rifles)...I just wish up here in Canada we had different laws so we can hunt with ar types of rifles ....it’s only range and back home Again very nice video Cheers davide

    Great video! As an avid reloader, 6.5 Grendel is my next round to experiment with. Standard reloads are a piece of cake, but I’m interested in oddball rounds now, in light rounds and experimenting in the heavier rounds for improved downwind performance. I’m specifically interested in 300-400 yard accuracy and now to figure out if I trust myself enough to take my chrony out to 400 yards and shoot across the top. I can calculate it, but no better proven method than shooting through the posts. I need a new chrony anyways. Maybe I’ll shoot low on purpose when testing and tell them wife “oops”, so I can finally ditch the user unfriendly Chrony Gamma. My rifle is a 13.5” and I get amazing accuracy out of it, at a cost of reduced velocity. However, it plants deer like a champ with 123 SSTs and is dialed with factory ELD Match. Shot 2 deer with the SSTs now and both times it dropped them within feet. Split the heart in half like a sushi knife on the first deer I took. 2nd deer, I gained tremendous confidence, and took a direct center neck shot. The deer dropped instantly and never so much as twitched. Confidence in the grendel platform for hunting is just as high as using my 243 win, 270 win or 308. Dead is dead with proper bullet performance and over 1500 ft lbs of energy on target. Very happy

    I am not a reloader but I can tell you that the longer the barrel, the more complete the powder burn is and that results in maxed out and often consistent velocities. From my research there is a point after 100% complete powder burn where the load reaches maximum velocity, and after that the bullet starts slowing down. Most factory reload data comes from a 24 inch bolt action barrel or pressure test barrel, and these barrels will always result in higher projectile velocities than a gas operated rifle (the rifle cycling according to my research takes away between 100 FPS and 200 FPS from the bullet). If you are getting higher velocities than recorded with no pressure signs, or accuracy degradation I consider that to be a good thing. If you really want to test the stability of the load then you are going to have to do a high heat firing (a few mag dumps before accuracy testing) and a cold firing (probably put the rifle and ammo in a cooler with bags of ice for an hour). If the load can pass this test without displaying pressure signs then I say you have a load that should not fail you. TL-DR The formula you have for ammo so far seems good.

    I would say if that load is too hot for one it's too hot for both. I think you're just on the right combination if the brass is good and the barrel length definitely has to be why the speed was so good. So the pressures should be good.

  • @davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009

    @davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009

    Yes, except for the first shots in the 20" which were lower than previous tests. But, after case and rifle inspection at the reloading bench, there was no case stretch and no primer pocket looseness. so I will stick with that load for both rifles due to acceptable accuracy. However, the ballisticians at Alexander Arms, Speer and Sierra have the ability to check for chamber pressures and place max load data including velocity expectations for our safety. When reloading, inconsistent low velocity and high velocity based on listed load data with the same components is cause for 'prudent further investigation' and why we reload. Thanks for your comment.

    The 24 inch gives me better velocity that I feel makes the 6.5 Grendel more effective on game. Speed helps and also translates to better foot ponds of energy within the cartridge limits, on game. Both are pretty accurate. The big benefits to the 20 inch barrel is ease of getting in and out of the truck faster, should you need to. Also neither would be a good choice for a added suppressor. The 18 inch would be ideal for that. Thanks for watching and your question.

In his manuals and on various forums you will see loads and FPS for the 123 grain top out at 2450 -2500 fps.. As far as the what the bullet does on deer sized game, bullet construction, distance to target and shot placement has more to do with actual terminal ballistics as bow hunters have had arrows zip right through a deer at 250fps. I am a bit confused. Did you mean to imply that longer barrels with the same cartridge create higher chamber pressures? I do not believe this to be correct, as the chamber pressure begins to drop as soon as the bullet has moved, and will be the same for every inch of mutual barrel length even if one barrel is longer than the other. For example, if you use Quickload you will notice that maximum chamber pressures do not change with barrel lengths as you are working up loads in that program. So if a load is safe in a 20 inch barrel it will be safe in a 24 or 26 incher as well. Also, I believe that with an AR's gas system, a gas tube of the same length on 2 different barrel lengths will still transmit about the same gas pressure to the bolt.

    Thanks for your input David...I may have misstated, or had a slip of the tongue, as all of my videos are a running dialogue with the video camera and I am limited to my editing ability...It's a good thing to have subscribers contribute for clarification an or correction. I should have made it clear that even with a longer barrel, the increase in velocity from the 24" BCA upper over the 20" BCA upper with the same exact load was extreme and more than the reloading manuals printed velocity for maximum loads...No doubt, pressure increase does contribute to increase velocity . But after checking the fired brass and primer pockets there were no anomalies. A good thing...So a possible explanation and further investigation could lead to chamber tolerance being different between the two rifles...I sure do not want to cause a bolt or other catastrophic failure for extra FPS velocity, (Grendel limit 53,000 PSI), but that being said I do like the accuracy of the rifle and that load. Thanks again for your insight and for watching.

    If you’re not seeing any problems with signs of pressure, why does a 2600+ feet per second velocity out of the 24 inch barrel concern you? I’ve always hope people will find combinations that let us push the Grendel just a little bit hotter

    In a Bolt action rifle, I would not be concerned in the slightest as long as accuracy was still there also. But in a AR-15 platform.. The bolt is only rated to 53,000 PSI max. The Grendel bolt face is quite a bit thinner than the 5.56, so it is possible to damage your bolt, bolt lugs and barrel at the chamber...So I do not want to exceed what the books (egg heads) say is maximum Sammi. standards. Just not worth the worry to squeeze out 5% more velocity.

    With smaller lighter bullets, speed is your friend, so longer barrels typically produce higher velocity thus more energy on target. That speed difference is typically 25fps per inch. As shown in this video I experienced between 100-150 fps difference between the 20 inch barrel and the 24 inch barrel. If you are stand hunting the 24" will work well. The 20" is a little more maneuverable if a quicker shot is necessary. Thanks for watching

One big cow elk at 175 yards and had a through and through clean pass right behind the shoulder and a nice Idaho bull 6x5 shot just over 200 yards where the shoulder was hit on the front side and the bullet rested right under the skin on the far side. The black bear was a boar that weighed about 375lbs not huge, but decent sized took out both lungs didn't go very far at all. Also seen it in action on several hogs of all sizes and the difference on 1 shot drops was huge when switching from 5.56. How's that recoil on the 6.5 Grendel? I've heard people say it's like a 223, but from watching your video it seems to send you back a bit. If I could find an extremely low recoil 6mm or 6.5mm round for hunting I would be very happy and the Grendel seems like it could be a winner. So I'd like to hear your thoughts on recoil if you have a moment please.

    Recoil is subjective to the individual, but can be measured by the law of physics...The best resource I've seen is the "Recoil tables, by Chuck Hawks" accessed through Google...To answer your question in short. The Recoil energy of the 6.5 Grendel is 8.9lbs and the recoil energy of a .223 is 3.2lbs...So it is safer to say the Recoil of a 6.5 Grendel is closer to that of a .243 Win...But I think the recoil of the Grendel is not unpleasant...

    I'm a pretty recoil-averse shooter. I have a 20" heavy barrel AR pattern rifle chambered in Grendel, with a large optic and mount. I have no issues firing the weapon. I would liken that gun's recoil, that weighs about 10 pounds, to the recoil of a naked 6lb 223 AR, which makes sense: 50% more muzzle energy, but the gun is 50% heavier, and they kinda "cancel-out", or at least it feels that way in my uncalibrated shoulder.

    Depends on what load you shoot and what the rifle weight is. 90gr TNT and 95gr Lehigh Controlled Chaos feel almost recoilless to me from my very lightweight Lilja 17.6” Wasp profile barreled AR15. 100gr and up will generate more recoil that isn’t as bad as 7.62x39 in an AK or SKS, somewhere in-between those and the .223 Rem in the AR15. Reciprocating mass effects recoil will also depend on how the gas system is set up. The large the port and closer it is to the chamber, the more perceived recoil from the reciprocating mass you will feel. A well-tuned rifle will feel like a pussycat compared to the exact same rifle with too large of a gas port. My kids shoot Grendel without a problem and they’re still pretty little. A 6mm AR or 6mm ARC is very low recoiling if it has a heavy barrel, but the 85-95gr loads in Grendels feel the same.

    The first sign of overpressure is a flattened primer which you do not have. You aren't even close to the velocity limit. The poor accuracy was telling you that the bullet was being underpowered. And by what it appears, it was under powered by quite a bit. You weren't even getting a decent group at a hundred and twenty five yards. 120 grain 6.5 Grendel should be easily capable of producing muzzle velocities comfortably above what you've indicated so far, even with the 20 inch barrel
