Maybe you could advise me Doc Tac ? I have 3 recently bought ARs. The Sig Patrol, LWRCI-A5 & a Zev AR-15 Billet. Should have just bought 1 as a 6.5 Grendel, but didn't. The Zev is a mid length gas system & requires no more than an 18" barrel. 20" barrel requires full length gas system. Is it easy enough to replace the bolt, barrel to alter the Zev into a 6.5 G ?

U.S. military snipers target enemies past 800M. U.S. Army Soldiers train out to 300M U.S. Marines train out to 500M So the comment about using the Grendel as an in between round for SDM (Army SDM train for up to 800M) isn’t really solid because the standard weight Grendel round at 800M is dropping 19 feet at 800M while the SS109 (the standard battlefield M4 round) is dropping less than fifteen feet. As trusting it for a sniper round, no way. Snipers are trained to shoot to distances that make it so that .300WM is on the table as a .308 replacement (and that argument has been a constant for a very long time; during our 2009 Afghanistan deployment there were .300WM rifles in the system [thank you SOCOM] that the unit was considering getting them for our snipers but we couldn’t get them delivered in time to get the snipers dialed in and practiced on them before leaving the mobilization site so our unit stuck with the .308s. The snipers wanted them, and so did the command team because we knew the engagement distances of the areas we were going in to, but a schedule is a schedule and logistics can’t order more prep time). Also, when I went through SDM, we were using ACOGs, and to date, Trijicon still hasn’t released an ACOG with a 6.5G BDC…. obviously, Trijicon could manufacture one with a couple months warning, but I don’t see Uncle going with a round with more drop than 5.56 or .308 NATO rounds…. What SOCOM does is up to them, but the bureaucracy that makes decisions for everyone outside of SOCOM is not gonna change up to a round with more drop… wrong or right, good or bad, the bureaucracy will make the decision and more knock down power hasn’t been a consideration for battle rifles or handguns since Vietnam…. 6.5G would make a great battle rifle round (0-300/500M), but drop makes it an issue past those distances considering all the other rounds available with better numbers. Good vid, solid talking points.

July 2020, the ammo shelves are practically empty. Sullen faces staring at nothing, wishing for a box or two. My happy ass rolls up, grabs a couple boxes of 6.5G and 10mm for the g20. Those same sad eyes turn to jealousy and hate. I smile as I walk away.

Is the zombie theory going bad? Looks like the weirder the cartridge the easier it is to find. Consider how fast you can go through ammo. If the supply stops the popular stuff is gone in days. A running lever gun will look real good when the ARs stop.

15yrs ago I asked my neighbor who happen to be on of the best long range target shooters Ive seen what was the best all round cartridge I could fit into a AR15 platform that wouldn't cost so much per bullet. He told me the 6.5 Grendel. Since then I've done a couple of Grendel builds in AR15 platform and loved the performance. I just built my best one yet. A Grendel in the AR15 pistol with a 12.5 barrel. That's the shortest barrel that you could go and still keep all the great Grendel characteristics.

I was fascinated by this round 10 or so years ago, I qualified at PI on the M14, serving in both the USMC and the US Army, I was never pleased with the AR platform. So thus saying my Grendel builds were a little unique I had a company in SC set me up a Ruger Mini-30 in 6.5 Grendal, and after talking with the Dr. Out of Texas who championed the 6mmPPC, Patriot Arms in Georgia built me a bolt gun based on CZ-Carbine, they wanted me to go with a 20” barrel for aesthetic I guess but my reading on the 6.5x55 Swede was the 6.5 in an 8 twist liked a long barrel, so I was insistent on a 24” barrel, all agreed it turned out to be the right choice, as the CZ magazine extends down carrying the rifle with your hand in front of the mag, it was very balanced, not to mention it was wicked accurate. When I retired my Son in Iowa inherited both, hope he’s enjoying them, his personal builds were AR platformed.

Jonas Svensson hi from a fellow shooter in the USA. ok, it has been found by ballisticians that a 6.5-6.8 projectile diameter is the "Sweetspot" in physics for a Rifle projectile the 6.5 is best (assuming proper collary mass). I know the Swedish service Rifle used to be the AK-4 (G3 variant) in .308/7.62x51 NATO. I think the 6.5x55 Swedish mauser is the Best overall Boltgun Round extant with perhaps the 6mm PPC besting it slightly for accuracy at closer ranges. What we should do is Bring back the Stoner 63 chambered for this round (robinson m96).

Another interesting cartridge that is a derivative of the 6.5 grendal is the 6mmar designed by Robert Whitley. It is a grendal case necked down to 6mm (.243) bullets. Essentially a 6mm br for the AR-15 platform.

Start using the Hornady ELD bullets, their polymer tip resists thermal deformation much better than the old formula. The A-tips are fantastic too, but pricey. And remember folks, the 6.5 Grendel starts slow but ends fast!

Many post that I see are years old. I just got into the Grendel 6 months ago and it's 2021. I'm convinced it's a great round and serves it's purpose. I'm a big 300 Blk shooter, but beyond 150 yards, give me the Grendel. I'm not inclined to shoot at an animal beyond 150, but paper as far as old eyes can see. The downside to Grendel for me is, not many people are shooting it. In the mist of the ammo and component shortage, there's no range brass. I thrive on reloading what others throw away. (LOL) I just picked up over 160 empty, once fired 300 Blk cases in the last 3 weeks. Loaded and ready to go, but no Grendel out there. Out of stock online for even Starline Brass.

My Grendel is a recent vintage Alexander Arms, so I don't waste a lot of time worrying about the bolt. When it comes to the AR-15, any experienced Grendeler will tell you that the real limitation is the hoop strength of the chamber; the greater diameter of the case, the thinner the chamber wall of the rifle. The Grendel cartridge could easily operate at 54,000 PSI with a properly supported chamber, but is constrained to a maximum of 50,000 PSI by the yield limit of the AR-15.

Run an AR platform in 6.5 grendel with around 500 rounds through it so far. No bolt problems yet, even dumping 58 rounds in a row (from various sized e lander mags). Only issues I’ve experienced were due to the extractor that came with the Odin Works BCG I run. I’ve since swapped that out with an Alexander arms extractor and keep a couple of spares around as well as a spare toolcraft 6.5 grendel bolt. I run a mid length gas system 16” barrel with a standard carbine buffer/ spring and have used factory Hornady black, sst, and American gunner, federal fusion and berger, and American Eagle. I have some Alexander arms loaded with 120g Barnes tsx hpbt I plan to hunt with soon, but I haven’t tested in my rifle yet. So far it loves the Hornady loads and is a little finicky with the federals.

I love the 6.5 Grendel, it's the best of the bunch in my opinion. It can do everything the 6.8 SPC can do PLUS soooo much more, what's to even consider? As far as bolt breakage issues, it seems like that was more of an issue when the Grendel was first gaining popularity due to folks not using proper bolts. I haven't heard of any bolt issues in the last four years or more. It's a very rare occurrence at best. It may just be the best or at least among the best, deer hunting calibers ever created. When used in a lightweight AR platform you get the aforementioned light weight, near limitless customization, affordable ammo, very good capacity, excellent ballistics for hunting AND able to run double duty as a long range target gun.

I load 123 sierra matchking, 123 hornady sst, and hornady 123 amax....normally.. 27 gr IMR4895. I tried a lot of different powders and loads, but this one has really worked great for me. Very consistent. I don't remember what the pressure is, but it's not close to max. I never load hot for any of my rifles. at 500 yards my 7mm-08 load is about a foot lower than factory loads, but I can shoot .5 moa at 100.

TexanUSMC8089 Do you load the 7mm-08 with the IMR4895 too? My favorite game load for my 7mm08 is the Varget powder, with Hornady 139gr GMX rounds and regular winchester large rifle primers, it never fails to do 0.6 moa on the first 3 shots. You definitely get what you pay for with those weatherby vanguard rifles.

For my 7mm-08 I use 43.5 gr of RE17. Hornady 139 gr SST. I really wanted it to shoot the 162 amax, but it just didn't like them. Yea, weatherby vanguard rifles are outstanding. They're actually made for weatherby in japan by Howa. Crazy but true. They're very well machined to very tight tolerances. I have a Howa mini action in 6.5 Grendel. Very smooth and accurate. My 7mm-08 was a project rifle. Started out as a $300 savage axis 2. I put it in a boyds stock and bedded and floated it. Nikon P308 scope. It's kind of irritating, but it outshoots several rifles that cost three times as much. lol

Interesting! I've never put much thought into this caliber. The bolt part is really a non issue. I keep spare bolts for all my AR's in house anyway. At least 1 in the grip and 1-2 at home depending on the volume of shooting that rifle sees. My 7.62x39 actually has 5 lol. I'll have to do some more research on this one, but I do have more receiver sets than a normal human should. Perks of working in a gun store I guess.

At 100-300 yds my 16" Grendel puts one hole on paper and the rest follows. It's my all-time favorite AR and I have plenty. I went AA full-auto bolt and still haven't had any issues or breaks. After building this to MY likes at $1,700 I'd be irritated on replacing bolts.

When I first saw the Grendel on future weapons I had to have it. Although, I had not owned one firearm at that time, I did not know that it wasn't available to the civilian market due to the Clinton assault weapon ban. So when I found out I could not have it, I never even thought about purchasing it. Now as of 2012, I purchased my first firearm and over time I found out how much more expensive and especially how much harder it was to get specialty, and I guess you can say exotic since that round had not really been adopted by our military. So I stuck to purchasing and building rifles that had rounds that were very easy to come by. Now a couple of AR's later, I'm looking into purchasing a new and I guess you can say a different fighting rifle load. Still, the Grendel still comes up since it was the very first fighting rifle load I looked into getting. Even the search I just made brought up this vid, which was 6.5 vs 6.8. So maybe in due time, thanks!

+jack suquett You could try out reloading, it can really cut the cost on ammo, especially ammo that is somewhat obscure. Attention to detail while doing it is very important tho, but as long as you don't do anything crazy, it's not that hard. Look up some videos on it, and I would suggest pricing Lee stuff, and using a lee single stage press for your first press, they have one thats under $30 I believe, on cheaperthandirt dot com, and Amazon.

I have a 24 inch barrel custom built Grendel. I've killed 1 coyote 2 bobcats 2 pigs and 3 deer with it. Have dropped every animal except one doe with it. It's accurate and packs enough punch to drop a deer at 200 yards. With the 123 gr hornity it went clean threw a 200lbs bore @ 150 yards. Don't know that I would attempt an elk hunt with it, but I do plan on taking it to Wyoming for a pronghorn antelope hunt this coming fall.

My 6.5 grendel AR groups wolf steel at half inches at 100 yards. I’ve ran a couple thousand rounds through it of that same steel ammo and have no bolt issues at all. I have a palmetto state bolt and an Alexander arms 18 inch barrel on a BCM upper. It’s my favorite rifle. And I have a BUNCH of rifles. This cartridge is nasty and I’m glad I chose it over 6mm ARC. I’ll eventually have an AR in every possible cartridge though. Thanks for the info. I’ve yet to find any of the 140gr options for this projectile.

I have several hundred rounds through mine shooting factory hornady black and wolf steel. I have broken a extractor early on with the wolf ammo but have shot over a hundred rounds of the stuff since with no problems so may have just been a bad extractor or a damaged shell casing.

I think a lot of the mass or penetration concerns people have with any of the 6.5 bullets (and also 6.8) are all solved by the non lead rounds, especially the barnes TTSX rounds.

Maybe you could advise me ? I have 3 recently bought ARs. The Sig Patrol, LWRCI-A5 & a Zev AR-15 Billet. Should have just bought 1 as a 6.5 Grendel, but didn't. The Zev is a mid length gas system & requires no more than an 18" barrel. 20" barrel requires full length gas system. Is it easy enough to replace the bolt, barrel to alter the Zev into a 6.5 G ?

Great video. I like the Grendel for its efficiency as it has a nearly unmatched power to powder ratio, but in a modern bolt gun with modern ammo the hundred plus year old 250 Savage still smokes it. Like the 300 Savage had near 30-06 power, a 264 Savage would have been ideal. I'd call that wildcat, the 6.5 Savage Bastard!

Great article, have 3 Grendals an they are my favorite, will shoot less than 1 inch groups at 100 yards, the 16 inch compared to the 20 inch gives up about 50 to 60 FPS, hand load all my ammo, just FYI you know about using 7.62 x 39 brass an fire forming it to make 6.5 Grendal brass, I get 50 pieces of Winchester brass for less than $25.00 and have had very few hic-ups, great stuff. Keep up the good work.Thanks;ARB/Recon

It may just be my Grendel, but I had problems with the PPU. I had primers blowing out and jamming in and ending up in my buffer. They use a large rifle primer and are not that great for reloading. I had problems with brass not wanting to eject. I now only use Hornady brass and reload beyond 10 times with no problems.

CMMG makes the MK47 Mutant, which relies on a chunkier and more robust 308 platform and bolt/BCG to run 7.62x39 reliably. In AR-15's chambered in 7.62x39, the bolt is also usually a weak point. I could see CMMG coming out with a 6.5 Grendel variant based on the modified 308 BCG used i ntheir 7.62x39 MK47.

Been shooting the Grendel for about 4 years now, before SAAMI. The 140's will not work in any of my rifles, I have 4 right now all different barrel manufacturers. You should keep it to less than 125gr, I use 120 and 123. Mark Krebs is supposidly working on an ak in 6.5 Grendel and Mossberg is making a Bolt action in 6.5 Grendel. The PPU is made by Wolf, the PPU and Wolf are Large Primers for you reloaders. I have ran my Grendel so hard it had a primer blow out, No bolt breakage. There is a bunch of people who are using the 6.8 LWRC bigger platform with Grendel with very long bullets

Excellent information and opinion here. I knew nothing about the AR platform bolt issue (of course, I just picked up a complete 18" upper today, having read about this cartridge and all of its good points) so this video has been extremely informative for me. I really liked the opening statements pertaining to downrange ballistics. What barrel length are those figures from? I know 24" is considered optimal for this cartridge, and I'll be running an 18," so how much can I expect my velocity/energy to suffer? Thamks again for a very concise and informative video.
