6.5 Grendel vs 6.5 Creedmoor: Which 6.5 Should You Use?

In this video I talk about how the 6.5 Grendel and 6.5 Creedmoor compare to each other.
While hunters and shooters in Europe first embraced the 6.5 caliber well over a century ago, it has taken much longer for that caliber to really catch on in North America. However, that’s changing fast as more and more Americans discover the advantages of the 6.5mm bore.
At this point, the 6.5 Grendel and the 6.5 Creedmoor are probably the most widely adopted 6.5mm cartridges in the United States. Though they have similar names and utilize bullets of the same diameter, that’s basically where their resemblance ends. Indeed, the designers of each cartridge had very distinct priorities in mind and built the 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.5 Grendel to accomplish very different tasks.
In this episode, I’m going to do a detailed comparison of the 6.5 Grendel vs 6.5 Creedmoor to help provide some insight into which cartridge will work best for you.

This is pretty much a no brainer. Grendel in an AR, Creedmoor in a bolt.

The 6.5 Grendel turned out to be a perfect round for my circumstances. Before a full shoulder replacement I hunted deer in Michigan with a .308 most recently having some 150-200 yd shots across fields. After the shoulder however I was not able to handle the kick of my AR-10, which I sold. Using a 5.56 is illegal for Whitetail deer hunting in my state,a bummer seeing I already had 2 5.56 AR-15's. Then I found the 6.5 Grendel upper could be used with my already owned AR-15 lower. The Grendel has plenty of punch to drop a deer at 200 yd with ballistics I am used to. It also barely kicks more than a 5.56 and MUCH less than the AR-10. A perfect gap fill between the 5.56 and the 7.62 x 51.

I hunt with both a CZ 527 and a Howa Mini in 6.5 Grendel. My load is H335 behind a Nosler ABLR 129 grain bullet. The velocity is 2580 in the CZ and 2500 in the Howa. Last year I shot a medium sized 8 point Coues whitetail at 505 yards on the Mexican border in AZ. The deer was facing me at an angle and the bullet went in the shoulder and exited the off side around the kidneys. The deer walked 15 yards and fell over. The terminal damage was extreme. I shot a very large 8 point the year before at 485 yards with the 6.5 Creedmoor in a Ruger American Predator. That deer went down immediately. Both have their place but I do love these extremely lightweight Grendel mini rifles when humping around rugged mountains at 6000-8000 feet.

I prefer my grendel over my creedmoor. Grendel in fusion msr ammo has dropped deer and hogs. Creedmoor I've shot horndady Whitetail and they have run with perfect lung/heart shots. First half of blood trails non existent until the chest filled with blood then easy to follow. Just never had to track with grendel.

The best way I found to resolve this question was to get both. Have been using the grendel for hog hunting. I like it on the AR platform.

I disagree that the 6.5G “slightly” narrows the gap between 223 and 308. It’s really right in the middle between the 223 in terms of caliber, wounding capability, and downrange energy/wind drift. It’s not a “slight” improvement over the 223. It’s a remarkable one

I have dropped hogs and deer with my Grendel bolt action Howa , using hornady 123 sst. No issues all dropped where they stood.

I have a Grendel in an AR took an antelope with it with one shot this year. Love the 6.5 Grendel. Two years ago I took an antelope with my 6.5 Creedmoor with one shot.

I like my Grendel. I like my 308. I like my 30-30. Just follow the basic rule for most game is 1,000 ft/lbs of terminal force and expanding bullets for maximum energy transfer.

Bought a creedmoor, waiting on my useless government to approve the license. So I'll probs only be able to tell you if I like it next blooming year.

6.5 grendel, with 140 rdf and 28 grains AA 2520 from my 18 inch match barrel runs 2300 fps at the muzzle 1644 energy and 1211 at 1000yds with 457 energy. No pressure signs. Love it in my small package AR 15

I enjoy the 6.5 Grendel. It isn't Zeus's lightning bolt do-all, but works well on light game to 400 with proper ammo and shot placement.

Good video explaining the differences and characteristics of both. I just bought a Bear Creek fluted 18" and then found out two other guys at church have Grendels too. Have read about some break-in on the mags. Everyone of us that use the Grendel should be taking 5 minutes to call AND email service of the ammunition companies and SCREAM for ammo. It's the only way the ammo is gonna get back on the shelves any time soon. Lots of us are reloading, but to get it to the masses the producers have to feel the same pressure they felt over the common calibers!

Great timing I just had a discussion about this yesterday and was going to ask your thoughts on the Grendel. Awesome as always my friend. Still have a lot of the custom loads in the 7.08 but always hunting for something fun.

I ignored the initial reports of feeding and weak bolt face issues that plagued the 6.5G in ar-15 platforms.

Good review. I have both uppers for AR15 and LR308. I have CM in a bolt gun. The CM upper is 24 in and makes the LR308 platform a heavy beast. I would not want to lug it around and offhand shooting is tough. The Grendel is very mild to shoot and I may try it at one spot I hunt where the distances are not much past 200 yards. I will say I put three good shots on deer last year and they all ran a little. I’ve heard of people anchoring deer with the CM but I’ve not had that experience. There was devastation in the chest so there just must not have been enough of a power dump. I was using 143 ELDx hand loads at about 2700.
