Since it’s still a relatively new cartridge, many hunters probably don’t know very much at all about the 6mm Creedmoor. That’s understandable because, while the new cartridge has performed very well during practical shooting competitions since its introduction, the 6mm Creedmoor only started making the transition into the hunting community in the last couple of years. Even so, the 6mm Creedmoor has received a lot of press because it’s well designed and offers certain advantages over similar cartridges.
Many hunters are still understandably skeptical about it though. Is the 6mm Creedmoor the latest flavor of the week that will fade when the next big fad comes along? Or does it have the staying power necessary to compete with more established 6mm hunting cartridges like the .243 Winchester?
In this video I discuss the pros and cons of the 6mm Creedmoor cartridge in detail, plus I also provide some information on the 243 vs 6mm Creedmoor vs 6.5 Creedmoor so you can decide which one fits your needs as a hunter.

I have a 243 and I think the 6 mm creedmoor has become popular with the 6.5 mm creedmoor I have two rifles in 6.5 creedmoor and they are very accurate but so is my 243. I won’t sell my 243 but I will buy a 6 mm creedmoor and add it to my collection great information thank you

Agree, while everyone I know has been whining about no 243 and 6.5 Creed ammo I've been well supplied with 6mm Creed from local shops.

I built a light compact multipurpose rifle in 243 Winchester. The barrel has a 1:9 twist and is 20 inches. It can’t stabilize anything above 100 grains and has comparative slow muzzle velocities for the caliber. I can’t imagine comparing favorably to a well built 6mm CM unless your hunting woodchucks or small predators. It’s still a reliable hunting rifle when it comes to the local white tails.

Although I can appreciate the 6mm Creedmoor, since my wife already owns a 6.5 cm and a 243 it is hard to justify the 6mm. She thinks that it would not offer much beyond her two rifles and I completely agree. Now if I didn't own either of those, it would be a strong consideration for a light recoiling deer rifle. I'm not too impressed with its barrel life though. 6mmCm it's a bit of a barrel burner. John, as always, I appreciate the rich amount of pertinent information as it applies to hunting. I always come out of these videos knowing quite a bit more about the topic. Thank you for your time effort and expense in producing this content!

I am a 243 guy. The 6mm CM is an interesting development for sure. I wonder if higher case pressures would result in shorter life for brass. If I ever feel the need for more speed in the 6mm class it will most likely be a 240 Weatherby.

With a 6mm Creedmoor wouldn't you have less recoil, more energy down range, longer barrel life and more ammo availability than a Weatherby?

I had myself convinced that my next gun would be a 6mm creedmoor in a cz 600 Range, until I you mentioned the 240 wby. I love Weatherbys and speed. My 257 wby. (3650 fps with 100gr TTSX) It is as accurate as my 6.5 creed and 6.5 prc. Now I am going to look for a 240 but that Cz 600 Range guarantees 5 shots under 3/4 moa! I am really torn.

Advantage of the 6mm cr is brass not stretching as much than the 243, for a reloader, disadvantage is with the twist rate of the creed you can't shoot anything smaller than 70g

Awesome video. I really appreciate the part where sun it up with “here’s where we stand” One question I have is about what you think the future of these 3 cartridges as far as ammo manufacturing is concerned? Like is this current situation going to be the beginning of the end for any of these?

Honestly sticking with my trust 308 win for deer and my 300 PRC for larger game. Cause I reload for both. I have so many options. That said said some day I will venture into the 6mm/6.5mm area but not yet.

If I didn’t already have a 243 and was looking for something, the 6 CM would be a decent choice, and I think I will be recommending it to others if they are looking for something in that caliber.

Great video. I notice that 243 ammo is more available in off brand plinking ammo like prvi partisan and sellier and belot. I wonder if the 243 is starting to be known as a broader used cartridge. I noticed that Tikka has it in 1:8 twist. It seems like the 6 MM market is becoming crowded like with the 6arc and others. It seem like the . 243 seems to be riding on through it OK but I would like to get your input about that.? I am in the market for the one and only center fire rifle and I want to get something that is going to have factory ammo availability for fun and maybe some hunting

I have a rem 700 in 243 with 1/8 twist barrel. It must outdo the 6mm cred as 243 has larger case capacity with option of heavier projectiles.

I have an RPR in .243. my load is a Berger hybrid 105gr at 2.86 (max OAL for the AICS magazines). I am pushing that bullet at around 2950fps and it shoots .2s all day. the twist rate/Max OAL has nothing to do with the cartridge that is rifle specific. You can find fast twist .243 rifles or build one.

I don't have a bolt action hunting gun yet. 6 Creed is awful tempting cause it's a great target round too. But I wonder if I should get something bigger in case I ever want to hunt anything out west?

I wanted a 243 for hunting (deer and coyote), ended up getting a great deal on a Bergara HMR, which had some problems but thats mostly smoothed out now. I like that the 6mm Creed has a faster twist rate so I can use longer higher bc bullets. Just wish the barrel wasn't 26" long, kind of a pain. A nice benefit is I can still find 6mm Creed in places, haven't seen much else in a long time.

I would’ve recently bought a 6mm CM instead of a 6.5 CM had more rifle models been available. I like Tikkas and Weatherbys in particular. Tikka is slow to move on new calibers and I was being impatient.

  • @jaysunkreuze1466
    @jaysunkreuze1466 Жыл бұрын

The 6mm CM is a great cartridge but I chose the 6.5 CM instead and here's why. Barrel life. The 6mm CM has a barrel life of about 1300 rounds. The 6.5 CM will last about 2300 rounds. The 6mm CM is slightly overbored while the 6.5 CM is not. The 6.5 CM is superior in efficiency. This only matters if you shoot a lot, which I do. But for an average hunter who may only put 500 rounds through a rifle over it's lifetime, this is not an issue. In this case the 6mm CM is a fine choice. All this is fine but one must also know that both of these cartridges were designed to shoot the heaviest bullets. If someone buys these rifles and chooses light bullets, the long range capabilities are wasted.

I own a 50 year old .243 in 700 remington that has taught 3 brothers to hunt, everything from ground hogs to mule deer,I've never had an animal get away when shot with it(and not all were perfect shots)but 365 days later, that animal had been dead for 1 year

@@Thebiggamehuntingblog thanks for the reply! I am trying to fill the gap between my 30-06 and my 9mm carbine and 22lr rifles. I have previously been using 30-06 for mule deer, black bear, and would have used it for whitetail but haven't been on that hunt yet. I have 3 boys coming up and think something with lighter recoil will also be an excellent centerfire entry point for them. I think the 243 or 6 Creed would handle deer well, although many in my area stick to 7mm/30 cal for mule bucks. 6.5 Creed is very popular for good reason, I'm sure, but is a little closer to my 30-06 and I'd just as soon throw a 150gr 30 cal into it than shoot a 6.5 Creed. 243 would cover varmint to deer. I'm leaning towards 1 in 8 or 9 twist rate to ensure I can use it for deer with some confidence. Only thing that keeps me from 6 Creed is more limited rifle selection and less hunting ammo.

Yes, that is correct: the 243 Winchester and 6mm Creedmoor have different SAAMI maximum average pressures and SAAMI standardized twist rates. This directly affects both the bullets they are optimized for use with and how fast they can fire those bullets. This is the very essence of a cartridge comparison.
