243 vs 6.5 Creedmoor: Which Is Best For You?

Спорт

To learn more about popular hunting calibers like the .243 Winchester and the 6.5 Creedmoor, visit: huntingguns101.com/optin16151...
In this video I talk about the .243 Winchester and how it compares to the 6.5 Creedmoor.
While the .243 Winchester has a long history of use as a great mild recoiling deer hunting cartridge, the 6.5 Creedmoor is much newer to the hunting game. Both offer certain advantages to hunters and there is a bit of overlap in their capabilities, but there are some significant differences between the 6.5 Creedmoor vs 243 Winchester cartridges you should be aware of.
Unfortunately, there’s a lot of hype and misinformation out there regarding the capabilities of these cartridges, especially with regards to the 6.5 Creedmoor. Not surprisingly, while each cartridge offers certain benefits to hunters, it’s still easy to get confused when trying to understand their actual strengths and weaknesses.
In this video, I conduct a detailed comparison of the 243 vs 6.5 Creedmoor and discuss the pros and cons of each one to help provide some insight into which cartridge will work best for you.

I shot my first deer with the 243, took some with the 6.5 hit a fox with 120gr and it hit it like a mack truck, my own personal choice is 243 allows me to use 58gr to 75gr tipped ammo for varmints, heavy soft points for deer I shoot. Both are good 6.5 is slightly better for larger deer species and if you want lr gong shooting too

I have both and recommend everyone else aquire both. The one one advantage that he didn't mention on the 243 side is cost of ammo. 243 is half the cost of 6.5. If you shoot a lot, that matters.

I usually hunt whitetail with a Tikka T3X chambered in 30.06, using Norma 150 gr, ammo. I had a total shoulder replacement in September this year and even though I have a Limbsaver recoil pad on this rifle I couldn’t shoot it without pain. I purchased the exact same rifle in the 6.5 and using 140gr Norma ammo and I could shoot it to my hearts content without pain. I was easily shooting sub MOA by my 3rd trip to the range and killed a 200 lb 10 point @ 90 yds. He dropped in his tracks.

I am an older hunter, and I have taken more deer than the majority of people have ever seen. I will put my .243 and .270, with my hand loads, up against most calibers out there. I thought about a 6.5 Creed more, but just couldn't justify it. I don't take any shot that might be chancy, because I respect our deer, and I want a sure, clean kill shot before I take it. Deer size game is the biggest game I take to date, but I wouldn't hesitate to shoot Elk size game with my .270 with my loads. Thank you for the comparisons, it is basically what I thought it would be, great video sir!

Perfect for youngsters, aging hunters, and for those that like seeing what they hit. Yes... You actually see the bullet hit due to low recoil :)

The Creedmoor is more refined and more powerful. The pressure is 62k psi vs 60k psi. However, it is more expensive than .243 Win. For most hunters of small game to medium size game, the .243 is a more practical round. It is cheap and available in most local shops.

Very well done analysis of these fine rounds. I'm having a hard time deciding which one to get now. I gave two of my boys a 243 each when they were young and my youngest son got a 6.5. They have been good rifles. This Thanksgiving everyone is coming home for the holiday and we are going deer hunting the next morning. I can't wait, because we have done this the last two years and they have shot 3 bucks and one doe. They are beating their dad so far, but I love seeing them having a successful hunt and helping with some of the butchering

The stats you showed shows the 6.5 going faster. A gelatin block is necessary I believe, with imitation muscle and bone etc. Each rifle will deliver it's own "hydrostatic shock" to the animal, that is the test I would like to see and would give a really good picture of what these rounds can do. Great video!!!👍👍👍

Hello John. I lean toward the 6.5 Creedmoor as well. While it's true that there is big hype, it's not without merit. It's just a darn good round that is well suited for hunting. Plus if I felt I needed a 243 bullet. I would probably buy a 6 Creedmoor. The 243Win is also great. I would get the AI version, throat it out with a reamer, and use 115 grain berger bullets.

I’ve only killed game with .308 as it has been my go to for years and it works. I became fascinated with the 6.5 CM, got one and understand why it is so popular. Love shooting it. As a .308 guy, I find the 6.5 easier on the shoulder for a long range session of several hours. I like to shoot. I know a 6.5 will do the job on medium game. I’ve always heard the .243 is a respectable deer round with super light recoil characteristics. Now I want to shoot it. I go after pigs and white tails I I think it will do the trick.

Thank you, Sir, I'm a bit older and by extent nostalgic (and part Norwegian); hence my ideal cartridge preference, 6.5x55 SE, is quite hard to obtain in a rifle such as a Sako in the USA. Following I recently purchased a Benelli Lupo in 243 Win and I am extremely satisfied, literally 11 out of 10! Benelli, depending upon their posted information, list the 243 Win twist rate as either 1:9 or 1:8; however, I have found thru bore brush rotation that the twist rate is maximum 1:8.25. This being said, I believe the most significant benefit of the 6.5 Creedmoor had been the attention to twist rate and to bullet weight & shape. Other than Savage Arms or specialty firms, I am not familiar with everyday stock barrels in 243 Win that are less than the conventional 1:10 twist rate. The importance of attention to twist rate in 243 Win bullets above 100 grain is finally being addressed by 243 Win rifle manufacturers. So a 103, 105, 107 grain 243 Win is now maximized provided your rifle is 1:9 or 1:8 twist. In signing off, I wish to thank the 6.5 Creedmoor for tightening the gap between the two cartridges. And yes, I will be purchasing a 6.5 Creedmoor for the large game, though Pronghorn at 300 yards with a 243 Win 105 grain is not the reason. Think: Elk at the same distance.... Cheers and my thanks to firms who are conscious of this....

my 243 Savage Axis and Mossberg Patriot in 270 are my favorite super light weight scoped guns and either my 30-30 lever action (light weight) or 8mm Spanish Mauser (medium weight) non scoped brush guns for the thick forested woods. But if I could only own 2 guns the 243 scoped and 30-30 non scoped would be fine for any animal in the eastern forests. I used to own a lever action 35 Remington and that would even be better if I was hunting bear or wild boar. if I could only own one gun however the Henry Long ranger in 243 with iron sights and scoped with see thru scope mount would be my choice.

The Creedmoor is gaining popularity but dose not cover the other 10% either. At ethical hunting ranges their is not a lot betwwen them and good lighter bullet performance is an advantage.Used a 243 for years here but now do the same with 22-250. But this is here in Ozz. I can understand someone picking the 6.5 Creedmoor as their one rifle. But if you already have a 308 or a 243 and don't routinely shoot at 400 yards it's not worth the switch, unless you got a lot of money. My favorite in the mid 80s was the 6.5 Swede. But as I culled the herd down to just my bread and butter guns the 308 beat It out as it is a military round here in the US.

I bought a 6.5 and a .243 at the same time a couple weeks ago. The .243 is a Ruger American and the 6.5 is a Savage Axis II. I was surprised to find the .243 has a noticeably less recoil, when the 6.5 is already pretty mild. On paper, I know the 6.5 has the advantage in most scenarios but I am just shooting paper with them at a 100-500 yards, so in those ranges the creedmoors advantage is almost nothing.

While that’s an awful lot of helpful facts on the two cartridges, I’ve had a .243 Win and now own a 6.5 Creedmoor, and the particular rifle in question matters a LOT. For instance, a super light, compact stock youth model .243 likely has as much felt recoil as many 6.5 Creedmoors. This is because stock dimensions/fit and the weight of the gun are probably going to matter as much as the little difference in recoil pounds between the two cartridges. However, if we’re talking about deer rifles, the real issue is whether a particular rifle chambered in .243 Win will group with the heavier bullets designed for deer. Mine would not, and I learned the hard way that 75 and 80 grain bullets are NOT a good idea for deer, even if the guy at the sporting goods store says they’ll do just fine. Just my experience.

  • @Clearanceman2
    @Clearanceman2 Жыл бұрын

I have both but like the creedmoor better because it will shoot much heavier bullets. I'm shooting factory copper and in barnes, .243 is 80 grains and creedmoor is 120. A lot more knock down. I just hunt whitetails. Both very flat shooting rounds. The big advantage of the creedmoor is that 1 in 8 twist which allows those heavy for caliber bullets.

The 6.5 Creedmoor just duplicates the 6,5x55 in a shorter case while keeping the original faster twist of the Norwegian/Swedish 6,5x55. In Norway and Sweden the 6,5x55 has proven itself as a short range moose cartrigde, and as the ideal reindeer cartrigde with the lighter 140 bullets.

I’ve owned both and I still own the 6.5 creedmoor. If you want lighter bullets you can shoot 95 grain bullets out of the 6.5 at 3300fps, which is faster than the 90-100 grain .243 bullet. The 6.5 creedmoor offers mild recoil and a heavier hitting bullet to give a little more room for error on deer sized game than the .243 can offer. Both are very light on recoil. If you want something for varmint, go 204 ruger or 22-250 or something similar.

So if you're shooting at 400 yards or more the 6.5 Creedmoor is a great choice. But the Remington 260, previously the 6.5-308, is a better choice. One of the biggest problems it had was Remington repeating the 6mm Remington mistake of not having a tight enough twist rate to stabilize the longer 6.5 bullets. My dream round would be the 6.5-308 Ackley improved with a 1in 8" barrel! If the goal is a thousand yard shooting that Ackley will beat the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Hi John, If I'm primarily going to hunt feral hogs rather than deer under 200 yards, what cartridge would you go with, or does it matter at that yardage? I personally feel the larger caliber 6.5 CM would be better on hogs.

Both will work, but yeah, I'd go with the 6.5 Creedmoor out of these two. Hogs can encompass the full spectrum of sizes and toughness: there's a big difference between a 50 pound hog and an honest 250 pound boar. Most guys shoot hogs in that 50-100 pound range and a 243 will work great on them. The 243 will work fine on the really big ones, but I personally want something bigger just in case...

I agree with all of this. But I tend to look at the age of the cartridges. IF the 6.5 creed was developed back when the .243 was it would most likely have at best a 1-9 twist and would suffer somewhat like the .243 does from that aspect. And would have suffered from the bullets of the time. Had the .243 been developed when the Creed was it would have better bullets and a more reasonable twist rate. So compare a creed with a 1-10 or 1-12 twist to the standard .243 and then compare the .243 using a 1-7.5 or 8 twist with today’s heavier bullets. How much closer would they be? Just food for thought.

You make a very interesting point. The 260 Remington will somewhat closely fit the bill to what you're asking for with an "old" model 6.5 Creedmoor with a slower twist (1:9 in this case). The 260 Rem is built along similar lines of the 243 and is basically a 308 necked down to .264" instead of .243" like the 243 Winchester. I haven't done a head to head comparison of the 260 vs the 243. However, I HAVE done one on a "new" model 243 compared to both the actual 243 Winchester and the 6.5 Creedmoor. The 6mm Creedmoor is a 6.5 Creedmoor necked down to 243 caliber and paired with a 1:7.5 twist barrel. Learn more here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/an51yqp8obfOYNI.html

No matter what caliber you already own or want to own, the consideration should be the versatility, the performance, and the cost of the rifles ammunition in addition to the additional cost of a yet to be purchased rifle or an already owned rifle. Aside from the fact that some rifles barrels favor some manufacturer's factory loaded ammunition over other manufacturer's factory loaded ammunition is those new hunting law ordinances especially regarding non-leaded ammunition. The new ammunition ordinance loads that contain full copper or other non-leaded elements require another daytime visit to the long distance firing range. I personally would like to see better and heavier engineered projectiles for the .243 Winchester, which is essentially a necked-down .308 Winchester in disguise and a historic and traditional varmint and deer hunting rifle.

True, the 6.5 Creedmoor can fling a 95gr bullet faster than the 243 can shoot 90gr bullets. However, all the 95gr loadings I'm aware of for the 6.5 Creedmoor use varmint bullets. For instance, Hornady has a 6.5 Creedmoor loading with a 95gr V-Max at 3,300fps. That's indeed faster than the 90gr Ballistic Tip and ELD-X bullets for the 243 here, but Hornady also offers loadings for the 243 with 75gr and 58gr V-Max bullets at a screaming 3,580 and 3,925fps...
