    Wolf 6.5 Grendel is currently at the exact same price as its steel-cased .223 counterpart. 6.5 Grendel is looking more and more appealing.

    I am shooting the Wolf 6.5 in one of my AR's. It is not as accurate as the Hornaday ELD that I fire in my other Grendel. However, the Wolf is great for a plinker that never shoots beyond 300 yds. SGammo.com seems to have the best prices for the steel 6.5 Grendel.

    I wish it was still so cheap, I have a case of 500rds manufactured in Russia in 11/2021, paid $380 shipped. Still acceptable for something that can be used for almost anything with a respectable edge in power over .223, .300blk, 7.62x39 or even 6.8spc that is nearly .308 power with a 20" 6.5 Grendel vs a 16" .308 in a smaller, lighter, cheaper, package, I only paid $264 for a 416 SS 20" 6.5Grendel Upper. I can't afford to waste ammo but, it not going to bankrupt me like $1.50-$2.50rd factory brass ammo.

    was skeptical about ordering this ammo, but I put 100 rds through my 6.5 Grendel without incident! No light primer strikes, no failure to ejects and was surprisingly accurate!!!! All myths dispelled for me today!! If I can ding this ammo on one thing is that it shoots very dirty. But that’s neither here nor there as you should clean your rifle thoroughly after each range visit anyway! My fears are over I will be purchasing this ammo for practice OFTEN!!

    I too, am not really fussy about using the FMJ ammo. for precise target shooting. I use it for a ' recreational' shooting day, to try for distance and water jug shooting etc. you know, general plinking. I use copper jacketed whenever precision is desirable. Then again, it is a sporting game, as such, and I just go to the range to have some R&R. Actually I like shooting with my SKS-45's and other ex-military rifles with 'mil-surp' ammo. to me, this is great fun. My personal circumstances don't allow me to be able to shoot in competition, although I like watching guys like DocTadDad putting their firearms through the paces. Thanks.

    When you see the bi-metal it's a copper jacket over a steel jacket for reinforcing then it's back filled with lead when you use a steel quartz just to make the ammunition little cheaper and sometimes you make it match grade like Norinco was doing

Was using a CBC industries 18” barrel. At 60 yards just to get a good bore sight and during breakin. I got all in one hole less than 3/8” 5 shot group. Very very low SD. Also using a Rave 140 SST trigger. Scope was a STAC Sightron 4-20x50.

    I would be cautious with this ammo. Ive put about 1200 rounds through my 16 inch AR-15 using this ammo and ive gotten numerous stoppages from short stroking that I have not gotten from other ammo types. all of them being failures to extract. had the extractor and spring replaced and used different ammo to be sure, but my rifle does not like this ammo. I usually shoot about 100-120 rounds a session and the last time i shot it it had a stoppage every magazine (one of which i had to mortar clear the gun because the bolt closed on the stuck case). Rifle is a 16inch BCI using 24 round E-lander mags if this information helps.

    Interesting you think the hollow base is interesting. How do you think they get the smelting lead in a fmj. In a hollow point they Pour it in the tip to get the solid base , rear of a bullet is more important for ballistic coefficient. This is why match ammo is hpbt.

  • @jimhans1

    @jimhans1

    John Underhill the lead is not molten when put into the jacket. They use pre-cut pieces of lead and then they stage the cold lead into the jacket. The only time that molten lead is used in the bullet making process is for "bonded" bullets, to help it bond to the jacket material.

    DocTacDad Wolf tends to use multiple sources for their Wolf Gold line. All their 6.5 Grendel has been PPU thus far. Also, the bimetal jacket is the reason that the bullet is .263 instead of .264 diameter, because it doesn't compress as well as a regular copper jacket. Solid copper bullets are the same way.

    Something that gets left out the equation a lot is handloading. New brass costs between .50 and 1.00 per round. Why not just get some factory hornady rounds that are around the 1.00 to 1.50 range and fire them and you get the added benefit of free brass? Steel case berdan primed cartridges may be good for SHTF but are rarely the quality that you would want especially for an accuracy first type rifle like the 6.5 Grendel.

    It seems to me that you have a light strike problem. Test the pull weight of the trigger and upgrade to heavier hammer and trigger springs if your pull weight is significantly below 6 pounds. I did a lot of study before I purchased my two Grendels. Both have been upgraded to an H2 buffer. The long range rifle has a 3.5 pound Rise 140 trigger and the one firing Wolf has a 6.5 pound nickel-boron polished mil-spec battle trigger. I have had no failures of any kind with over 200 rounds through the Wolf and 80 Hornaday ELD through the other. I have checked my ejection pattern and have found that the cases eject to the 3 O'clock position as they are intended.

I don't want to go any heavier with the trigger. The longer firing pin made a huge difference making it tolerable. A mil spec pin was light striking more than half the time. Still very happy with wolf though. Can't beat the price. It's obviously not my zero or game round but makes it possible to shoot a few times a month. I also run the hell out of it in my sbr with zero issues. And the one issue " happens to all ammo eventually" is great for training for unexpected malfunctions. Train how you fight.

    richard wallace maybe if your gun is not set up correctly. I'm running 3 different 6.5 Grendel rifles, from 12.5" barrel up to 20", all 3 have Triggertech triggers in them, 2 of them are at 3lbs on trigger pulls, one is at 1lb trigger pull in their newest trigger that I am doing test and eval work on as a pre-production sample. I have fired more that 2k rounds of the wolf steel cased ammo through them without a single malfunction of any type.

    Kinda bummed about the accuracy. 1"-1.5" groups would excite me. I hope a few others jump on board with economy priced ammo, as I really like the idea of the Grendel.

    Depends on the type of shooting you plan to do Stainless is a little more accurate tho if you intend to shoot long strings stainless will not dissipate heat as well, for that reason being my 6.5 is on the ar platform I went nitride (fluted, again better heat dispersion)

    Charles Cheung there is, and it has shown extensive damage when used for hunting hogs. It's kind of weird to think about how it can wound. That hollow tip can collapse for "expansion" OR you have a long skinny bullet with a heavier tail than the tip that will yaw when it enters a soft target. There's also been gel block testing done by Alexander Arms that showed a huge permanent wound channel through an 18" block. If you were going to use a "FMJ" for self defense or hunting, this one would fit the bill. Look up 7N6 bullet performance. They were common in 5.45 and Wolf is using the same design for these rounds.

    Gunpowder is fairly stable and not impact sensitive. The primer is where the volatility is. Gunpowder needs a heat source.

    Neil Harris I mean for the friction it can create if some of those tiny powder balls get stuck between the bullet and the brass. I've wanted to get one of those hammers but I'm really worried about the friction issue while the bullet is comming out. I know if you dont have the round on a barrel its deadly potential drops a lot, but hey, that's exactly how accidents happen, when you get way to confident. Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it.

  • @neilharris4462

    @neilharris4462

    9 жыл бұрын

    RBGJoe I see where you are coming from but it's a non issue. There is not anywhere enough friction to cause a spark. If it were unsafe then we wouldn't be able to load compressed charges. Smokeless powder is pretty safe and needs the fire from the primer to ignite. Primers are the real danger and even they need an impact to set them off.

    RyanKC this is cheap plinker zombie ammo, same results w any cheap ammo of any calibers really. This is a less then 1" moa all day w quality ammo. These will shot the hair off a flea @ 200 yards. You can shot coyotes to elk at 800 plus yards. Long barrels 1500 yard gallon busters. Fits in ar platform. Blows 556 out of the water. Half the weight of 308 or 30-06 W dag near same ballistics with very little recoil. Why wouldn't you want it? 300 black 1/3 of the range. Not even worth mentioning really.
