I love watching people's faces the first time they hear the greatest beat drop of all time!

Man when we were freshmen in high school this came out. It didn't matter which friends car you got in they had this tape on it was just a different spot on the tape. This whole album is awesome, listen to every song with an open mind

Heh heh…. You said “they had it on tape” LOL!!! Don’t worry, I also owned a cassette tape of this album. So funny though! 😂 The use of the words “cassette” or “tape” automatically means we’re ‘old’ right. Hell, young people now wouldn’t even be able to figure out how to dial 911 on a rotary telephone. They would do the circle thing than disconnect the call thinking it meant ‘send’.

These guys were like 18-19 years old when they recorded this stuff. Underage girls was a reference to Led Zeppelin and they didn't go around shooting people.

"High Plains Drifter" is a must, the combo of tumping beat and over laping back ground vocals is euphoric...

Yeah, The Beastie Boys have a huge variety of sounds, with the best beats, and really creative videos. Seriously, it’s gonna be a while. Score you hear a song you don’t really like from them. I recommend official videos for “Intergalactic”, “Sure Shot”, “3 MCs and 1 DJ”, “Pass the Mic”, “Root Down” and so many more. Also they made an appearance on The Chappelle Show doin this song live (The New Style) and it’s awesome!

This my favourite song on their first album. The beat in the 2nd part hard as fuck.

I was in grade school when this jawn came out :) I still remember dancing the “Smurf” to this LOL 🔥🔥🔥🔥 This song, Paul revere, Hold it now hit it, were my favorite from this album.

The “underage” comment was in reference to Jimmy Page from their previous lyrical line. It was rumored that he liked them young. The Beastie Boys were poking at that rumor.

Yeah, people don't always know that Licensed to Ill is satirical in a lot of ways. A lot of these kinds of references to the 'rock star lifestyle' were meant ironically, and this is indeed calling out Page. Because all that stuff about him and young girls is not just rumors.

Actually, nobody cared about "underage" in 1986... they just didn't. So long as you meant high school age and not kindergarten. I had teachers in high school back then who were openly dating my classmates. It was just a different world.

Old school hip hop was more about creative story-telling and word play. And it was about making people laugh and just turning the party out. These dudes put their tracks together with so many dope samples, beat switches, flow styles, and they were one of the best at that tag team rapping style. The Beastie Boys were always entertaining and they created their own lane in hip hop history.

Beastie Boys...Paul Revere, if you like this you'll "LOVE" Paul Revere!

My recommendation is Shadrach, the official video. It's a live set and MCA (RIP) directed and animated it. The lyrics are fire and to me it's a song the absolutely captured who they were at the time. It's my favorite off Paul's Boutique. Which, if you are a hip-hop fan and you do not own a copy of it, you need to do your homework.

I was in the 6th grade when License To ill came out. I wore that tape out. You can look at their lyrics like a comedian telling jokes. No matter how wild or crazy it is it's just a joke and with the Beasties it's just a rhyme.

When that bass dropped it killed em in the hood and rattled some speakers...........By the way they played their own instruments......You gotta listen to their whole catalog to see how FIRE they are young brothers.

Public Enemy Kurtis Blow Beasties Boys Please read & learn about Def Jam Records & those groups. They were one of the Cornerstones of Hip Hop. Russell Simmons & Rick Rubins Founded Def Jam Records And PLEASE Find & watch the movie: "Krush Groove". It will help u out a Lot on ur Hip Hop History. And it's a Dope Ass Movie.

It’s with a turntable and a TR 808. That’s why it’s simple. Conceptually it’s brilliant. In fact I’m shocked that no one has jacked and looped the beat at the end. Also rest easy, they were in HS when they wrote this. They’re weren’t Bambatta-ing people.

Every person who went to high school between the years of 1988 to 1991... knows every word to.... PAUL REVERE

Also when they wrote that they were still teenagers. Like only one of them was even 18.

The song was released in 1986 and they were born on 1964 & 1965, so they were probably between the ages of 20-22 when it was written. They WERE teenagers when they were doing their punk stuff though.

This is one of the all time greatest hip hop albums in my opinion! Every damn track is a godamn banger!

No, they were in their early twenties. Regardless, they were talking about Jimmy Page, the guitarist from Led Zeppelin, who was apparently into teenage girls. So they were basically dissing him (even though they sampled them, haha).

I just turned 50 ,so I was around back then when those rap albums were hitting the stores back in the 80s ...I had 2 drawers of rap tapes besides all my rock albums ...What we liked about cassettes is that you could take them with you, in the boom box that would make the blox go boom.. & the bodies spinning on the carboard was lovely ...those daze went zoom ..hi there 😄

Alot of the slang was NYC mid 80's Hip Hop slang--so it's very era specfic like "rolled up a Woolie & watched Columbo" A Woolie is weed mixed with coke in either rolling paper or a cigar & Columbo was a tv show

Legendary Song

I was in high school when this came out. I was totally into heavy metal at the time, but this kicked my ass. They were kinda seen as a novelty, three silly early 20-something white boys from New York rapping, but they were more than just a fluke and had musical talent. Obnoxious and over the top...it was great. I still crank "Licensed to Ill" to this day.

That song sums up my high school years.

The Beasties back and forth flow is legendary, but can be a bit dense especially if you don't know the pop culture they are referring to since it's from the 70's-80's. You should do some lyric vids or at least have the lyrics up in front of you. Unlike most modern rap, understanding what they say is important or you'll miss how insane they really are.

One of their best early hits!! Love them‼️🎶🎵🔥🔥🤘🤘 Keep in mind when listening to their lyrics, they were being pretty goofy & silly most of the time. Many of their lyrics are NOT at all meant to be taken seriously.

Take into consideration that this was what 1985-86? There wasn’t no go back and forth to compare it to. They we’re pioneers no doubt. From that point of view this music was from another universe so to speak.

Get It Together by The Beastie Boys is one of my favorites featuring Q-Tip.

You guys should check out the last track on Paul's Boutique, "Bboy Bouillabaise" is basically a 13 minute mini-album with some of the same flavour as The New Style. You will LOVE the beats.
