To do this well, I believe it is a rare talent. I had one junior student that did this the best. I never thought of it as 'holding shaft flex.' I would just use him as an example of how to accelerate through the ball. The kid was a small Asian kid that could outdrive kids much larger and stronger than he was. He never took it back to parallel and just had that same motion through the ball that you demonstrate at the end of the video. GOOD STUFF. Looking forward to the next video release. Side story. After practice some of the other kids would go out to play a few holes. This kids would many times tell me that he was going to go help his little bro. He once said, "Coach, you think I am good? You should see my little brother!" I asked how old his sibling was? He replied, "He is 4 years old." I would smile and just admire how much he loved his family. Well, his younger brother is now 16. Last year he won the National Drive Chip n Putt last year held during Masters week. He also won the 98th and youngest winner of the CA State Fair Championship. Kid committed to a full ride at USC. I guess his old brother was right. Both brothers hold shaft flex as well as anyone.

Your videos have allowed me to hit my 7i about 160 with 1/2 to 3/5 of the energy I needed before. I could maybe hit it 175-180 but that's why I have a 5i

John, as you know, in order to create both clubhead speed and shaft flex into impact whereby the shaft acts as a leaf spring and releases out of the div, to give that " effortless feel" when the club is doing the work! And also that fabled "HISS", which is the sound of the air desperately trying to escape from the dimples! One needs to decelerate the arms into impact in order to release the clubhead. Like a car crash, when the car stops : everyone flys out of the windscreen. You have to use the braking system in order to decelerate the arms into impact, I'n order to flex the shaft and release the clubhead. We need to emphasise this point, because, one of the biggest misconceptions in golf, which effects amateurs is the fact, that they need to speed up the leteral motion of the golf swing, though impact!

Hi John Did you see the stealth 2 driver has a 54 degree lie angle? The fairway wood is flatter as well Some of the major manufacturers are getting close to a club that rewards a better swing.

That sounds encouraging. We need a company that understands these things. The main problem is that most companies are designing clubs to compensate for the usual type of problematic golf swings. We don't have clubs being designed by likes of Ben Hogan or Tony Penna, David Graham or Arnold Palmer.

@@lagpressure …..You could throw Tommy Armour in there too. I believe Arnold Palmer is very underrated as a golf club designer. Palmer’s putter designs are legendary, but some of his iron designs such as the Golden Standard and a couple of the Deacon irons along with his Chattanooga Peerless Densitized persimmon wood heads are all wonderful.

I love your idea of holding shaft flex and acceleration post impact, but I am struck by one of your teaching points: If you don’t get to your left early, how do you have enough time to shift force/weight later without moving laterally into the ball? A lateral move into the ball leads to an inconsistent bottom in the swing. It seems to me that you want to do your work early to get left (even before the backswing concludes) so that you will be coming into the ball against a stable left side, which allows for a consistent bottom every time in the swing. Anyway, thanks for sharing your insights and for posting these videos.

The problem with going left too early is that most will not finish their turn. Snead's move of a "sit" to initiate the downswing followed by a lateral move is also excellent protocol.

@@lagpressure …. I found that practicing Johnny Miller’s swing thereby allowing my lead left foot to “slide-out” such as Miller did on his full swings allowed me to feel that I was moving “left” to soon during the downswing and also helped me to feel my left hip path during the downswing could be slightly cheated by moving that left hip straight back with shorter irons to help maintain shaft flex.
