    Very insightful advice, practicing technique. I watched a Henry Cotton video about hitting a tire to improve your hands and he said in the video “you’re only as good as your hands”.

    Hi John , Harrington here , enjoyed the chat on the phone last year , I miss your Dad , we had a lot of fun playing @ PVGC on Saturdays back in the day , discussing Technique , that’s really what I enjoyed the most , the guys we played with just played the game and routinely beat Ken and I , who teamed together in 4 Ball . I guess that’s why I ended up leaving my RE Business and hung up my shingle , teaching Technique became my passion ! I also enjoyed watching you play the few times we got a chance to play there at PVGC ! Thanks , John

    If you actually know what you're doing in the golf swing you don't need to practice often. People who practice often only have a "feeling" that they know as a golf swing so they practice often because they fear that if they don't, they'll lose that "feeling." Just because you can perform an action doesn't mean you fully and completely understand what exactly it is that you're doing. Like he mentioned, literally everyone who knows how to ride a bike does so by performing an action that they're completely unaware of. In golf we have a phenomena called "unconscious proficiency delusion" or UPD or the belief that just because you can do it, that you also understand it. So, basically all golf instruction ends up being, "just do this," and the instructor has no idea that's not actually what he or she is really doing.

    I learned a lot by not playing or hitting balls. I didn't play for 13 years, then came back to the game. Some things stuck, but a lot didn't. I found out quickly what was important and what was not. Good golf muscle tone was important. Drilling and strengthening critical golf muscles that drove pivot and forearm rotation, and then working on taking consistent divots with a 1 iron without a ball was extremely beneficial.

    Some solid wisdom in this video. The best part about even having a 1 iron in your bag is it is viewed by others as the badge of a golf-badass. That said, the manufacturers have strengthened the loft of the irons so much (to allow a golfer to hit a 200 yard 7 iron), that I believe a 3 iron has 17 to 19 degrees of loft. Most sets of irons today seem to be sold 5 thru 9 irons. I agree that eBay is the best place to find a 'trad' 1 iron.

    Daly, Nicklaus, Furyk, Duval, Finau etc. have funky swings but they would never change them. Many golfers now who chase new swings and techniques and coaches are able to win a few tournaments and reach the top but they come back to earth soon enough.

    It only matters what is happening through the strike... just as the examples you have given. That being said, it DOES matter what is going on through the strike. You can't just do anything in that arena.

    As a former gymnast, I had excellent technique and I was called the mini-Hulk because I had a lot of strength. This combination made my movements seem effortless. 🤷‍♂️. My flexibility and speed/strenth were assets to my golf swing, but never had great technique. I wish I had access to this man, when I was in my teens.

    It's never too late to learn. Regardless of what point you are at in life, the golf swing technique can be improved upon. I've had students in their 80's hitting the ball better than they ever dreamed possible. There is a geometric aspect to things as well that can help just understanding a few things. Rotating plane lines, ball positioning, where to aim on the ball for contact. Many things can benefit just from better orientation.

    @@ngascoigne The 1 iron would be the best path to deep practice. Once mastered, hitting a 1 iron is not difficult at all. Good technique makes it feel easy and very enjoyable. In the 1990 Masters video I posted recently, Faldo plays a 1 iron from the fairway on 15, under pressure, and on the Sunday back nine. Faldo had great technique, so it was not something he feared. He pulled it off just fine.

    Great video John. I feel the same way. Would you say that Moe was a hitter? From what I see of his technique looks like he is hitting hard and involving almost his whole right side at impact (especially his right hip) as he is letting the club pass him and extending with his arms and his entire body following after impact?

    @@lagpressure I am actually going to go "all in" with adopting a swing that for lack of a better way of describing it is based on "Moe like" principles and movements. I started doing it last year but switched back to my old more orthodox--traditional setup and swing after getting all the dumb "look its Moe Norman 2.0 comments." I live in Canada--so every other person here knows about Moe. But anyway, I was middle-ing the darn thing and compressing the crap out of it on every strike with my irons and the ball was flying straight at my target with beautiful trajectory---I mean every strike was just pure joy. But couldn't quite get the Driver swing figured out. jdp

    What if you can absolutely pure a 1 iron with bad technique? Or does a 1 iron require at the very least decent technique to flush it and hit properly?

  • @lagpressure

    @lagpressure

    If you can absolutely pure a 1 iron with reasonable consistency.... you have excellent technique... whether you are hitting or swinging. Now if you want to be able to do that confidently under pressure, I would highly recommend a hitting protocol. That being said, Jack Nicklaus struck a lot of great 1 irons with a swinging technique!
