Question: If I Knew Then.... What I Know Now....

The common cliche'... "if I knew then... " and it's really a truth for most anything.
While I learned a lot growing up with golf, and playing on tour, I've learned a lot more with the freedom to pursue genuine curiosity without having to worry about making cuts and trying to get onto the next tour. There was an incredible wealth of knowledge that came from the generation before me... that is mostly lost now. I played on tour at the end of the persimmon and balata (high spinning ball) era, and that really gave me a unique perspective. I really appreciate that now, and not playing for 13 years during the radical changes golf went through from the mid 90's forward was to me.... a real blessing. These are some of my thoughts...

There is so much wisdom in these videos. But most people looking to 'buy a swing' I don't think will get or appreciate it.

A game of endless learning. It wasn't until I started reading/listening to Knudson, Hogan, Moe, & Trevino that I really began to understand the swing and actually progress on my own. Thanks for your insight into your journey. In golf it's the little adjustments from head to toe that make the difference to becoming a true feel player.

Love to see a demo of your chipping method and how it’s influenced by flatter lie in your irons. Also how you took that to your putting. Thanks for a fascinating video.

Thank you John. I've learnt so much just listening to you. I was always taught to hold the club lightly, just let the ball get in the way. I went to a Colin Montgomery clinic and he said 'All amateurs grip the club far too tightly. I guarantee that I will grip the club lighter than you'. One coach showed me a picture of Fred Couples at impact with his right hand off the shaft. Then one 10 minute video of yours changed my game overnight. I wish I'd have known that when I first started golfing.👍

Swingers use light grips... hitters, firm. Hitting is better and more reliable when done correctly. I say that with 100% conviction... because I have used both at a high level.

Absolutely love the old "war stories" from your early days. The similarities from one pro to the next is astonishing. It's very much same story different time and place. I never made it to the tour, but after failing miserably I walked away from golf for about 15 years. Just playing once in awhile with my dad, like fathers day or his birthday. Came back to it in 2020 because of Covid. My old coach was a ball striking machine but couldn't make a putt if the hole was 2 ft in diameter. He hit it a mile and with accuracy. He eventually went into long drive and trick shots, Ben Witter was his name. He was an All American in college with Rocco Mediate and Lee Janzen. Sadly he lost his battle with cancer awhile ago.

@lagpressure sure thing. Locally where I live there's a former PGA Tour player. He played in the early 80's. Greg Lesher. Did you play with him by chance?

Mac O'Grady - another elite striker but poor putter. A video about Mac would be awesome...!

I've talked a fair bit about Mac... certainly a great striker... but I do think MORAD has a significant flaw. Hogan's technique I believe is superior.... in a practical way. That being said, MORAD has helped a lot of players... no doubt.

Loving these new videos John, Great insight. Curious, how flat do you go with the putter? 6 flat as well? I tried 2 flat and added loft to (5*) and that was a better feel and more similar to chipping. What about your wedges, do you go 6 flat with them as well? Thanks!

Yes, I set up my putter the same lie angle and length as my PW... 12 degrees loft.. but I have my hands forward.. like chipping... so that zeros out the loft essentially. Round grip... so it feels like a golf club and not some strange device.

Do you advocate a different release method for a senior golfer , struggling to rotate and with bad knees .

I have been watching your videos about a flatter swing. I have had some good results - but found a challenge with hitting off the heel, especially with the irons. Is flattening the lie angle of my irons a good solution, or is there something else I could be doing with the flatter swing itself to avoid this? Thanks!

You absolutely have to flatten your irons as well.

@@lagpressure Thanks John! I use graphite shafts. What's the limit (degrees) of bending/flattening can you do with these shafts?

  • @lagpressure

@@stevenolmstead I don't think I have ever bent a set of graphite irons. I really don't know, but I would think they could be more problematic because of brittleness.
