Your average magical urban recluse, digging through the tomes of times gone by to deliver unto those who will listen tales of grand adventure.
... I make long videos about old games I like. So if that sounds like your cup of tea, or other preferred beverage, stick around and see what random stuff I pull off the shelf.

I love MAR!! I actually have a copy of the ps2 fighting game!
Well, now I’m going to have to hunt that down…
@@HoodlieRPG It is a japanese copy, so I am not sure if it ever got an english release. Still a fun game!
I liked Okage but the ending half after the desert was disappointing.
I dropped the game shortly after the dock town originally. Having to sometimes go to every NPC to see who needs what took me out of it. Took me forever to find the guy in the second town who needed a spring.
This game was the worst thing i ever purchased. I remember being 12 and for once my parents actually gave me some money to buy a game and the visuals sucked me in but i remember beating the game in 2 hours and being so mad and never played this pos again
8:24 "Not only does this mean he's violating some form of public indecency laws-" Actually, warriors losing their clothes in the world of Ghosts N' Goblins is such a common sight that nobody seems to mind. In the sequel Maximo can talk to other people while in his boxers and they won't comment on his state of undress. This is not just a "story and gameplay segregation" thing, in a one-shot comic book that takes place between the games Maximo is reduced to his boxers at the end and even after he saves this kingdom from a villain the residents talk to him like everything is normal and he just walks away in his underwear not even bothering to armor himself up again so this is canon. I have to admit, I always wanted to see female warriors in this setting. In the failed Korean exclusive MMORPG Ghosts N' Goblins Online you are finally able to play as male or female characters who not only fight in their boxer shorts or bras and panties when they lose all their AP (armor points) but they can also run around the hubworld in their underwear if the player chooses to. This was a very good review. I just got the game a couple days ago after wanting it for years and am already at the third area. Personally, I love it but can understand that it's not for everybody. The difficult platforming has killed me more often than the enemies although several times I didn't have enough health to get past them.
❤
I found this game nice, entertaining and lighthearted despite some darker parts. And it has a real proper happy end.
19:35 - Oh Lawd, she dabbin'.
"The cult hit JRPG with no cult" Hello, I am a vtuber with a design choice playing direct homage to Okage.
I'm interested in the Dusk and Mysterious trilogies, but not sure which one I should start with first. Any opinions on this, Hoodlie?
Do you want to play with a time limit? If yes, Dusk. If not, Mysterious.
The music was something that stuck with me! I felt that the music of each area matched really well with the environment and over all feeling...
Immediately earned a sub for the King Crimson reference! Love this game so much
Thats so weird, i never had a problem with the final boss, i just stuck with Ari, Rosalyn and Linda as my perma party through the whole game and he went down pretty easily. The game sadly doesn't have huge story needs or specific locations for them so once you got a favorite party just stick them and go go go.
i have a theory that their design was based on rag dolls, based on a lot of spoiler related context. i love this game, but i can totally get why you think it has a poorly spaced mid game. a shame, really. and yes, i feel as though there are some things i didn't see you using that would've made combat easier... it's still horrendous. indisputably needs work on the combat mechanics. it also happens to have a system i can explain that would help you understand that "randomness"
I’ve gotten several comments since uploading of people giving me tips on the combat. Several of them were about using Ari’s Overdrive, which… I never mentioned utilizing in the video. I did use it, but I never brought it up. So… uh, my bad.
@@HoodlieRPG ah, ok. understandable. not curious about the mechanics, though, huh. or were those covered by rowdy diehards earlier too? lol (putting that nicely, i assume)
@@offyourocker Yeah, someone else explained them.
@@HoodlieRPG not surprised. i'd prefer i wasn't "that guy" so have a good day/night
Great video, these really do hold a special place to me but third really isnt that. I do like how important it seems atelier iris 3 is to the mana khemia series in terms of gathering, monsters on screen, and combat. Great stuff man, glad to see someone do these games in a bit more depth.
Thank ya kindly for watching.
I'm just here because someone posted the enemy designs
Need a Remaster to drop on Steam ASAP!
So, what's Klein hair colour was?
I discovered this game thanks to another niche 'cult classic', archangel:nemesis. The designs are clearly heavily inspired by Okage, the story/mood is very peculiar and memorable. I never play VNs but it hooked me, really recommend it
do NOT fuck with the okage shadow king fandom there are 3 of us
To be fair, you can use the controller normally, if you use control type b
That's why I made a joke about it. I guess it was close to the end, so I don't blame you for not seeing it.
@@HoodlieRPG my bad king, didnt finish it, due to just skimming reviews after my first hour of playing.
As a kid I struggled a lot with Baal in the final encounter but if you level well he’s no biggie and you can attack all parts. The only really difficult part is the optional Tower of Temptation
I can't wait to see you cover other Atelier games. 15:30 I never watched that one, but one old anime I liked in the summertime was Zatch Bell, the anime never finished it because I think the mangaka had an injury, but after a small delay he finished the manga. It was one of the earlier animes I liked so much that I read the manga. One Piece was amazing back in the day too, I can't imagine people nowadays watching it, I marathoned and watched 100 episodes over one summer when it was in Alabasta to catch up to it and nowadays people have to watch 1000+ episodes, though I prefer the manga nowadays too.
As soon as you showed Atelier Iris 3 I knew this was going to be a great video! With Radiata Stories it had 2 separate routes, but one was really rushed. There were content creators looking through the commented out code and found even more hours of cutscenes and story that didn't make it into the game. Maximo is so much fun, it's too bad the games didn't sell well, they were going to make a third game. Everything was so much fun, really does play like an old arcade game but in 3D. Really fun and hard bosses. Only big flaw I suppose is limited saves, either save or power up your character, really does feel like Crash 1. Check out Maximo 2 as well, it improves upon the original in every way and has some really fun bosses! You'll like them a lot more than these bosses. Maximo 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, I really liked the 3D intro stages that felt like a remake of the hamlet on fire, with villagers you can rescue and fun puzzles to solve.
You sound like Felt
Oh gosh. My childhood game ❤❤❤ Atelier Annie was my first Atelier game. I had a hard time playing it as a kid. I went back to it during the pandemic. Made me realize why I love the game bcs I like the early 2000s anime artstyle and love the 2D style. Had fun doing the alchemy and guild jobs. The characters r so funny especially their dialogue. The character designs r fun and memorable. Fun music. The story feels more like slice of life and when u mentioned the Atelier series is like Harvest Moon makes so much now why I love it. I grew up with Harvest Moon Back to Nature and Hero of the Leaf Valley. Anyway when I played Atelier Annie again during the pandemic, it was so fun and made realize how to do the business part of the game better. Btw I got the Royal Alchemist ending 👍After getting that ending, I'm afraid of playing the other Atelier games bcs Atelier Annie is so nostalgic for me and fits into my taste of artstyle, music, the voice acting, and character designs along with gameplay. If anyone have a suggestion for me to play a different Atelier game that is similar to Ateliar Annie. Let me know! Sorry for the long comment. It's so rare to see a video or anyone talk about Atelier Annie. One of my fav childhood games. Thank you so much this video and best wishes ❤❤❤
You could try looking into the Marie Remake or Arland. Those are probably the closest. Thank ya kindly for watching.
Calling Grandia a PS1 game when it was originally on the Sega Saturn is so rude. Same with Grandia II; that is a Dreamcast game.
1. Nobody outside of Japan played Grandia on the Saturn, and even then I’m pretty sure the PS1 version is the preferred version. 2. I never said Grandia 2 was a PS1 game, so I don’t know where you were getting that.
@@HoodlieRPGYeah it's actually not the Saturn version is superior.. And now that it has an English translation there's no reason to go and play the inferior PS1 port
@@HollowRick Well, what version is the HD port based on?
You're a really good singer
I wonder if we will ever see any of the DS games character in resleriana, they made a small appearence in nelke so gust hasn't Totally forgot about Them. Resleriana has so much potential as a way to get ppl interested in older characters so i hope that gust realizes this and uses some events as a way to tease some remakes. Anyway great vid this was very interesting.
Rapper XXXTentacion had an unreleased song called Okage The Shadow King. Also after he died Yoko Shimomoura wrote a song called Nocturne as a tribute to him.
Considering how well this video did and most of the comments being mostly the same, I guess y'all found your cult.
Great review! Have a caramel!
It looks like a big budget Sega Saturn game...but considering the first game was on Sega Saturn 8 years beforehand it's a backhanded compliment.
The cult is me. This game inspired a character in the novel I'm writing. Playing it is a core memory. Love this game.
Will say though I have legit never heard the name of this game spoken aloud and you saying Oh Ka Gey instead of Oh Cage is making my brain break, cuz I know yours is likely the right pronunciation bit it never occurred to me another way of saying it existed :0
Annie herself annoyed me, but I enjoyed the game.
I would say that Grandia is all about the path and not the destiny. Justin didn't know what was expecting him, and also didn't know if there was something ahead. Take the "End of the World" wall as example, only Galileo Force knew that it was not the end at all. But they went there and discovered an entire new world. And then you meet new cultures and friends but you need to say goodbye. And it is shocking, there are no fast travels, no way back, It's not a bye, it's a goodbye
the good in goodbye especially.
it was a good game for me. i laughed so hard on the intro of the game. thank you for appreciating annie <3 i also love annie because reminds me of marie which is my gal. theyre both lazy and i dunno i like the aspect of not being perfect girls :)
Okage has haunted my dreams since before I had even been to school, I know what it is now
Grandia is my favourite game of all time! I remember picking it up at a carboot sale many moons ago before I even knew what a jrpg was and fell in love with the game. 😁
I'm glad you liked this game overall, but as a longtime lover of it myself who has grown up with the game and played it at least a dozen times, I have to say something in regards to your complaint/critique about the magic. You never mentioned this so I'm not sure if you're aware, but every weapon and magic you level up in this game is also tied to specific STATS. Leveling earth grants strength, leveling fire grants wit (faster action for turn order), etc. Yes, Justin may lean towards physical damage, but you're still encouraged to level up his magic not just to get more options through spells and abilities but because EVERY level up of EVERY magic type increases his stats. And for the record, he CAN hit very hard with magic - all the Zap spells are quite powerful, and Feena only gets a single spell in that category very late in the game, while Justin has several available much earlier, assuming you give him fire and wind. ALSO, any party members that permanently leave your party leave their entire inventory PLUS new items in the stash. Those new items give a huge chunk of the experience they earned with their weapons and magic to whoever you choose, instantly granting you many levels. So if Sue was your main magic user and had a relatively high earth level, you could have given the item to Justin and probably IMMEDIATELY gained enough levels to get Dragon Cut. Or you could have also compensated with Gadwin's, since he also had earth experience to give. Between the two it's likely you wouldn't HAVE to "waste" a single turn using earth magic with Justin at all. I just had to say this because to me it really doesn't feel like a waste to go out of your way to level Justin's magic. He has several great offensive spells AND gets boosted stats. But even if you don't want to take the time to level his magic, the game does give you a free way to get the levels you need anyway. And for the record both tips I just gave you are given as "hints" in the game at various save points.
Is that so? I had no idea that was how the system works, so thanks for the info. I’ll keep it in mind if I decide to replay this game, it should make things much easier. Thank ya kindly for watching.
If this game came out today Stan’s human form would be a tumblr sexy man instead of a buff dude
Honestly, the end of the story really disappointed me. I'm someone who hates certain contrived...tropes. Since the review is spoiler free, I'll leave it free of these spoilers. The story follows after a certain point in the mobil game. It's probably a side universe though, since the story is nowhere near the mobil game story. But I do like the idea of it. The mc is basically a jack of all trades, master of none.
this was my first turn based action game I played as a kid and even back then I found it more tedious then anything to complete. the story itself didn't do much for the game but I still somewhat enjoyed it I guess
Pure nostalgia
I remember this game actually came with a skateboard peripheral that you could place on the analog sticks. Such a weird game lol
I remember trying to find one of those when I made this video, but I couldn't find one anywhere.
@@HoodlieRPG I don't think the experience would differ regardless. I could barely pass the second stage as a kid lol
