Atelier Iris Trilogy Retrospective

Ойындар

The Atelier series began in 1997 with Atelier Marie: Alchemist of Salburg, and stayed in Japan for the next 7 years. In 2005, Gust teamed up with a publisher to get their games to an international audience, starting with Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana. Followed the next year by Atelier Iris 2: Azoth of Destiny, and the year after that with Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm. These games stand in sharp contrast to what the series would be from Rorona onwards. They were closer to what was commonly seen as JRPGs, with a linear story and heavier emphasis on combat rather than laidback exploration and item creation. In 2023, I started covering every game in the series released in English, and this is a compilation of those reviews with a few minor edits and some extra overall thoughts on the trilogy at the end.

Honestly the class system in 3 is my all time favorite. It allows customization while still keeping the characters wholly unique. Usually if a game has a class system the characters become completely interchangeable. Having the classes be unique to characters fixes that problem, and no one else ever tries it.

Great video, these really do hold a special place to me but third really isnt that. I do like how important it seems atelier iris 3 is to the mana khemia series in terms of gathering, monsters on screen, and combat. Great stuff man, glad to see someone do these games in a bit more depth.

Iris 3 digging more into how the MC gets crafting ideas is a fairly important step. This was the point where they started doing more than flat purchases and storygates/linear paths. Mana Khemia was the next step where they made enough skits that missing a few would be normal. Blades felt like running out of budget without balancing the combat.

Hey Hoodlie, do you intend to do a retrospective/review up for Mana Khemia 1 for PS2 as well? For me it's the best narrative, characterized and best sounding Atelier title in the series and I'm happy that Vayne got recognized. I also like the serious and partway darker themes it has around where they also don't cheap out like what happened in Atelier Iris where it felt like the devs had trouble tackling such topics or at least pushing trough them instead of putting those moments off as a joke. Thing is why there isnt something like Mana Khemia done again by GUST is because the games sold poorly and apparently the japanese fanbase didnt like it for being different from the series, as apparently the Atelier series there has a more "comfy game reputation" (plus I think the game(s) sold poorly due to the timeframe they came out aka around the ps3 early days).

@@HoodlieRPG From what I heard and saw I think you're on the right track so far. Like I've seen and heard worse expressions from reviewers about what they like, dislike etc in contrast to what you offered, not only in these three titles here but also other reviews! Dunno how much weight you wanna give a strangers opinion on that but I don't think you're stressing yourself out about formulating your opinions, views etc..!

I...think you messed up the timeline. Iris from 3 really is Iris, from 2. Iris from eternal mana eventually died and was reborn as the child Iris in 2...which ten grows up to be the protagonist Iris in 3. All three of them are reincarnations of the Mana goddess Lilith. One of the main themes os Atelier Iris 3, and the character Iris in it as well, is the cycle of rebirth. I'll admit that they protrayed those plot points so poorly that left many people confused. I think that also tarnished your experience with the story and the third game in general. I also think you were a bit harsh on some characters and the egeneral plot of the third game. As cliche as it was, there most definetely was a story there and it was miles better than the first game's. I think the reused assets in the forms of the same dungeons can get to you in that way, but there story is absolutely there if you don't let these issues distract you. I also find it super funny how much you gushed about 2's combat and then soft trashed 3 while admitting it's basically the same system...with the added classes which even you admitted it's great. lol

I mean, I don’t remember finding any sources for each Iris being a reincarnation, especially since 2’s Iris takes on Viese’s last name and everywhere I looked in researched cited it as a prequel. And if Iris was already dead in 1, then it took her quite a long while to reincarnate in 3, which took place in a seemingly different world entirely. I did entertain the possibility of 3 Iris being a reincarnation, but again, couldn’t find anywhere that backed up that idea. Even if they did, she’s a totally different character than in the first 2, so I don’t imagine that would help my opinion much. As for the quality of the stories for 1 and 3, I still think 3 has the worse one just because it’s a generic fetch quest drawn out with poorly paced side plots, so all my interest in the main plot just died off because I didn’t like the main party. Which is all subjective, but hey, this video is all just my opinion anyway. As for the combat, the main issue I have with Iris 3’s in comparison to Iris 2’s is the fact it’s far more of an emphasis. Nearly every quest you have to do requires combat with something, and usually that involves more than 1 battle. Iris 2’s combat didn’t have the Blade system, but the meter/break attacks were an interesting way to mess with turn order instead of the rigid system used in 3. Plus, with how much longer Iris 3 is than Iris 2, the amount of time you have to spend in battle just wore me down and made its strong qualities stand out less and less as time went on. And like I said in the video, when I don’t have any motivation of story or another outside factor to keep me going, and fighting is all I’m expected to do, I just get really bored of it. Iris 3 has better combat compared to 2 in isolation, but it deserves a better game to really shine. But again, that’s all just my opinion. Thank ya kindly for watching.

3's combat is odd. It's when they started really getting into the style and pow in future titles, but it felt like they lost the pacing with it. Each class gets powercrept by each other as soon as the story progresses, only reaching parity at the very end. 2 is much smoother. Also Iris in 3 is.....much better implemented as reyvateils.

Nah. the two Iris Blanchimonts are the same person. Klein only being able to duplicate items is because the synthesis aspect of alchemy has been lost, and that's why there are reoccurring locations between 1 and 2. Iris 1's worldbuilding (from the old official website) even mentions a King Slaith, who would assumedly be a descendent of Fee's. Gaming press of the time directly stated that Iris 2 was set long before Iris 1, info which they would've got from the publisher. Iris Fortner already has her own full backstory, where she lived with her parents who took Edge in when they were children.

Remaking the series? ......nooooo don't do that. The best thing for Atelier Iris would be to make a sequel that ties the "Mana as physical beings" setting together. Maybe have it be the story that leads to Al-Revis/Mana Khemia's Academy being set up, or why Mana of super complicated concepts were becoming more of a thing. You could have it be a digimon or SMT sort of plot where the development of civilization reflected the birth of new Mana, and how each was exploiting the other. Even if the ending is plain enough, we already know from Mana Khemia 1 that whatever gets done here is not remotely perfect, and there's a lot of themes to cook from that.
