I make videos that make your move to Boston easier.
I am a Boston transplant. Moving to Boston was an overwhelming experience.
I didn't find as many guides on moving to Boston as I had hoped, and the quality information that I did find wasn't in one place. I've decided to create this channel to capture what I have learned from my experience moving to Boston.
So if you're hoping to learn about relocating to Boston, or if you just want to learn more about the city, subscribe to this channel to follow all updates. Feel free to let me know any aspects of the city you would like for me to break down.
My goal is that you can take just one thing away from this channel that will make your relocation to Boston easier. If you aren't relocating, I hope you can learn just one new aspect about the city.
Thanks for watching!

I can recall being well informed about CENTRAL SQ. by frequenting it's establishments many times over the years in 1940's -1950'S and 1960's. My brother lived on RIVER ST., my other brother worked at the STOP & SHOP across from the WHITE TOWER Hamburg restaurant and my girlfriend CLAIRE lived off of MAGAZINE ST. Two streets from MASS AVE. In the square was a great ITALIAN restaurant called SIMIONIES that served great food for cheap prices. We often went to the CENTRAL SQ. theatre, even late at night and he e.t had any problem. The square was full of stores like WOOLWORTHS dept. Store and luncheonette and Fruit and Vegetable stores, Hardware stores and Candy stores etc. I miss those years of low prices on everything that are now too high for many middle people. RE
Don’t move to eastern mass!! I’m telling you! We have the worst traffic and the roads are in terrible shape!! Too many people living here! Too damn expensive too. If you wanna pay $2600 and up for rent, well good luck
….if you move to Dorchester for the great hiking, you’re gonna be surprised 😮 😅
August 1st The new tap readers appearing around the system will go live. Then you will be able to tap and go with a contactless card or smartwallet. Also little tip. If you plan on ridding 5 or more times in one day Get the unlimited ride 1 day pass. The total will be less than the 5+ rides done. It’s so worth it after using the system consistently in one day. Plus, simply put, don’t buy a paper ticket. Always get a reloadable card
Thank you for the update and the tip! Looking forward to August 1st!!
I can’t believe I prematurely commented on two videos about this 😅 my bad but I get it now, I think lol
Oops I just asked about this on a different video! It sounds like it’s best to take the T downtown from the airport. I’ll be there for one day and I’m doing pretty much everything that you mentioned!
Just responded, but that is the way I would recommend, especially with the Sumner Tunnel is closed, or if you’re trying to save money.
This was super helpful! I’m visiting this weekend and flying into the airport with arrival around 9:30am. Right now I have that I need to get on the bus to the blue line station, buy a ticket, then walk to the inbound side to the government center towards Bowdoin, getting off at the aquarium stop. Is this the best way to get from the airport to downtown? I’m coming from Florida and have never experienced public transportation like this before.
That is exactly how to get to Aquarium from the airport!! You’ve got it! Would be really interested to hear how it goes for you. At 9:30AM there shouldn’t be a terrible amount of traffic if you did want to pay a bit more for an Uber, although the Sumner Tunnel is closed this month for construction, which increases the chance of traffic at any time.
Actually, Mbta is currently installing and rolling out the contactless payment like mta this year 2024
It will be awesome to see when it finally arrives!!!
The S & S restaurant is a far cry from the way it was in 1940's, 50's and 60's. It was owned by Jews who made genuine Jewish cuisine like pastrami, corned beef, salami, Matos balls, half sour pickles etc. My brother went there early this year and said it was awful and nothing like it used to be. New owners do that .
I grew up in the INMAN SQ. area 89 years ago. I frequented CENTRAL, HARVARD, LECHMERE, PORTER AND UNION SQUARE IN SOMERVILLE on almost daily basis to shop, eat and go to the theaters. I sold newspapers in INMAN and walked to LECHMERE everynight hitting all drinking spots also. Every square was in walking distance to a young boy and you could take the bus or ride the subway for a nickle each way. Nobody had cell-phones and that made great conversation between friends and strangers. Would I enjoy going back to those years ? Yes, in a heartbeat.....May GOD bless you all.
I lived about a mile from HARVARD SQ. In the 1950's and 60's and my rent for a 6-room apartment was $65 a month. I also shopped and ate in CENTRAL SQ. and INMAN SQ. , PORTER SQ. and DAVIS SQ. in SOMERVILLE...They all had movie theatres except PORTER SQ. Now rents are in the $2,000 to $3,000 dollar range each month, making it almost impossible to live a decent life.
Ferris wheels os one of the best bike shops here
Born and raised Bostonian here, I travel the US for work and I will say Boston has a lot to offer compared to so many others. There are so much to do, we have mountains a short drive, terrific coastlines, tons of history, amazing schools/hospitals and architecture. Boston feels like a major city even though on smaller size, small enough that its manageable and cleaner than countless cities that I have visited. Sadly it has become very expensive to rent or own, I saw many friends move out as they started having kids to areas that are more affordable. Never moved out because I have yet to find a city that offers what Boston does. I cannot believe that homes are going for in the millions in Roslindale/ West Roxbury!
Avoid the area! I grew up there so listen to me
This is an actual story of mine. When riding the T make sure that you yield the handicapped seats to people who need the seat. I was on crutches, riding on the orange line and I was trying to get to the handicapped seat when 2 young adults ( 20 year old) cut in front of me, he sat down in the seat and she sat on his lap making out.
I love living in Boston. I'm so happy that i bought my house right before the crazy interest rates
yeah whats up with there not being a lot of video on Boston? im thinking of moving there and its suprising how little resources their are for such a famous city
Very comertial like?? Doesn’t feel like a warm home neighborhood
I RHODE THIS SUBWAY 5 YRS AGO TO MOVE WHERE I AM NOW... ALL I WAS TOLD IS FOLLOW THE PEOPLE LOL... I FEEL BAD FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVE COMMUTE ON SUBWAYS EVERY DAY... I THANK MY LUCKY STARS 🌟 MY JOB AND APARTMENT ARE 2 MINUTES FROM EACH OTHER... SO NO NEED FOR A CAR...AND BUSES ARE FREE IN MY CITY 6 MONTHS OUTTA THE YEAR... ✌
Thomas menino the mayor of Boston in the 90s took bribes and with a stroke of a pen abolished rent control in 1997, Boston since then has gotten increasingly more expensive year after year
Boston is boring as hell
lol. You’re telling people from other parts of the country to start looking at the most expensive neighborhoods in the city. If someone from the mid west is able to afford $4000 a month for a studio, then by all means, get a place on Beacon hill. Otherwise you’ll be like the rest of us an pay$3600 a month for a 2 bedroom in a town 15 miles outside the city.
Nice and concisely narrated description for short stays in Boston.
Thank you very much!
The reason the drivers are so aggressive is because the road engineering in the Greater Boston area is the worst in the United States. At least in Europe they drive small cars.
yoost too bee u ford assembly plant.
cambridge ?
The most important column in the table is the first from the right - purchasing power index because it combines prevailing wages with CoL - Boston is essentially as expensive as Nashville.
Con #1 City votes Democrat
It’s boring as hell too
Everything closes by midnight. Sleepy town. Boston, the city that always sleeps very well.
@@bobjenks8642 I'm definitely not up at midnight, so that's fine with me. I appreciate being able to live in a city, but also have some peace and quiet at night.
Acton. You def missed Acton. Check it out. It’s the new Newton.
beantown is a very odd contradiction , on 1'point good health care , easy to walk about , fairly good schs , and visually easy on the eye's , on the other side of coin way to many killings , it's very pricey to live in beantown , people are socially primitive , and the craziest thing is that for a town in the far northeast it's extremely racist
How about the song by The Standells called Dirty Water? That's a great one. Let's go Red Sox.
Dinosaur 🦖 living at a premium THATS Europe too - old small houses 🏠 at a premium price 😂
I think we'd all rather live in Europe, but for those of us who aren't able to this is as good as it gets in America. It's very expensive in Boston, but the quality of life is really good. Definitely better than NYC or Washington DC imo
John Martin Smoked and sold crack for many years and then got into heroin use and addiction and got his young nephew and nieces hooked on heroin starting with cigarettes alcohol and marijuana and crack his family is pretty messed up and made a very bad and negative mark on Allston and lower Allston and Brighton also he did very bad criminal activities and is still at it I wonder when the law will have enough of his crime sprees and lock him up and throw away the keys?
Usually alot of passengers dont pay their fare when boarding on street level for the green line. For the new extension there are no fare gates. Sometimes the Blue Line is free when the Summer Tunnel closes.
Thank you for actually being very well researched on this topic. I've seen way too many videos scapegoating immigrants or airbnb or greedy landlords. The truth is there simply isn't enough housing in Boston for all the people who want to live there due to zoning restrictions that were put in place, in part, to limit the housing supply. And you gave an intuitive and balanced explanation for that.
saw the iftv independent film festival at davis square like 10 years ago.
Couple of added notes for rider etiquette: no speakerphone calls or playing music aloud!!!
Can’t believe I missed this one as it drive me crazy. Thank you for adding!!
Not for nothing but our politicians haven't helped the situation either, taxes and fees for everything. They'll be a tax on breathing soon enough. Also our utilities are state regulated, sadly all that means is the electric company says we want to raise rates, our politicians say, ok! Instead of actually "regulating" them.
It’s gotten out of control. I’ve considered moving multiple times.
Me too, if not for family I'd be gone!
would u keep the same salary or take a pay cut
Why the hell would anyone want to live in this corrupt state! I guess if you are an illegal immigrant or a politician who wants to commit white collar crimes, it's perfect . If you are a skilled worker, steer clear from this bureaucratic run state. If you're a white man born in America, definitely don't move into Taxachusetts! The quality has been going downhill for over 20 years. There's also more rats than humans. Just go behind any food service place at night and wait 5 minutes, and you will see the nighttime squirrels. AKA rats
Any recommendations if I'm trying to get to Cape Cod Canal or entrance of Cape Cod isthmus? I was just thinking of taking the bus shuttle to Blue Line then taking uber there to Cape Cod. The reason being is that uber drivers are more cheaper downtown than the airport who take advantage of people by cancelling rides to drive prices up. I'd rather give generous tips to more accepting moral drivers. On the other side I was thinking of the Logan bus or Red Line at South Station from taking Silver Line to Braintree south of Boston then Uber, but I'm concerned there won't be much drivers there, but I bet they're more accepting of a shorter ride. Flight should arrive at 4:50pm on a sunday.
I think your plan makes sense, especially because the Sumner Tunnel is closed on weekends right now (meaning the drive to Cape Cod Canal would be longer than normal for an Uber driver).
I'm flying in to Boston from Chicago at the end of July. How do I get to Marblehead from the airport? I searched on Google I'm just wondering, does the Charlie ticket work on busses also?
CharlieTicket works on buses! You get two free bus transfers on a Charlie Ticket. Marblehead is about 30 minutes from the airport. You should be able to get an Uber. If that’s super expensive, you could take public transportation to the North Station and take the commuter rail to Swampscott or Salem (depending on where you’re staying in Marblehead) and catch an Uber from there.
@BreakingDownBoston I'm staying by the Historic District on the 200 blk of Washington St. Thank you for responding. I'm very savvy about public transportation here in Chicago, but I'd rather plan a route before I get to Boston. Thank you for all this information.
@@MrsAdamsmary68 You can also take a shuttle from the airport to Airport Station on the Blue Line. Take the Blue Line to Wonderland, and then take the 441 or 442 bus routes to Marblehead. But, taking an Uber is also an option as well.
@@jadisbeebe5841 Thank you, that sounds perfect!
@@MrsAdamsmary68 Anytime!
No mention of Dorchester? Its probably the cheapest neighborhood in Boston. While the parts bordering Mattapan are sketchy, anywhere near I-93 has been gentrified. Plus there's tons of street parking.
boston sucks id rather be in tampa
Please go
It's one of the nicer large cities in the country. Lots of stuff to do and have mountains pretty close. Also pretty low crime. I came from the south and also lived in the midwest. The crime here is basically non existent compared to living in the south.
Do the single one way tickets include free transfers to buses or other trains as long as you're going in the same direction? I ask because in Los Angeles, the one way fares include a 2 hour free transfer to buses or another line as long as you're going in the same direction. Thanks.
Yes! (Mostly) Had to confirm on this one, and per the MBTA website: “For Local Bus, Express Bus, Silver Line, and/or Subway, transfer up to two times and pay only the cost of the highest-priced service. For example, you will pay one subway fare to ride the subway, a local bus route, and another local bus route.”
The 111 takes you to boston ASAP the it’s the stop right before haymarket 👀
Rarely any mention of the CharlieCard?? Interesting….
Its fricking freezing
It's tropical compared to the midwest, but yes the cold sucks.
There's no such thing as bad weather. There is just inappropriate clothing. I am an outdoorsman, and I am active outdoors all winter in the Boston area. The key is good insulation. You should wear longjohns whenever the high temp stays below 45 F. You need to wear a hat when it's cold, and of course gloves or even mittens when it's really cold. Finally, good insulated waterproof boots in winter. And don't let the snow stop you. Snowshoes are awesome. I actually prefer our winters to our summers.
@@newenglandgreenman I can tell you after 20 years of moving snow around I’ve had quote enough, no matter what your wearing
