Welcome to the my channel and the Way of Wood.
Making things is my passion. What I most enjoy about it is to figure out new ways off the beaten track. There is a wide variety of things that I make on this channel:
o Furniture
o 3dprinting
o Shop projects
o Woodworking jigs
o Props and fun projects
o Small scale dollhouse models
o Restaurations
o ... and many more ...
With each video I show and explain the methods, share plans and 3D models to make sure you can recreate the project. But most importantly I would like to inspire you to look for new ways and creative solutions to master your own projects.

Would there be a difference if using activated carbon filters that are already made, versus using the actual carbon like you did?
Good question. I don't know. I think that this way there is more surface the smoke can interact with - but give it a try...
Nice excellent vedio sir thnx keep making
Thanks 🙏
That accompanying assembly in the video - what kind of device is it? I like the design...
Here are the FreeCAD paths on macos for the A2+ modification: v0.19: ~/Library/Preferences/FreeCAD/Mod/A2plus v0.21: ~/Library/Application Support/FreeCAD/Mod/A2plus
not sure where u got the Cubic Meters from but i think u meant cubic feet for the blowing capacity of the fan. 1300 cu meters would be 34,900 cubic feet per minute out of an 8 inch outlet is about 160 mph, lol. blowing your filters right out the backside and exploding the box.
You would also be unable to open the laser cutter lid as the suction would be abt 1.3 tons inside the machine
Thank you very much 😊
question if the lid is closed is the k40 glass sufficient protection?
Thank you very much for this! It almost seems like there is so much one needs to know in order to even get a CNC machine working on a project - the learning curve seems (at least from first glance) to be overwhelming. I use Freecad to create 3D printed projects. And creating an STL file only takes two very simple steps.
The CAM part is quite a bit more involved. The main difference for me is that it is much easier to mess things up with the CNC by setting a cut too deep, selecting the wrong reference, etc. ...
Wouldn't it be better to put the filter panels before the carbon filter? They can remove the heavy stuff and the carbon filter is more about VoC removal. Also to improve airflow can you just pass the air over carbon filled baffles with thin gaps between the baffles? If you are worried about sparks in the pipe it is also a good idea to put a wire mesh spark filter first maybe in a small aluminium section to capture any embers before they reach the panels or carbon? Really nice design and setup BTW ...
"Thanks for the inspiration! Can't wait to try out some new projects with my laser cutter. 🙌"
Let me know how it worked
Add water to pass the filtered air thru so it's even more filtered. Cotton, wet zone and forced thru the water, bubbling thru. Less smell should be the advantage
Sounds like a good plan
Thanks for the update. I'm getting ready to build mine, and this really helped. Re: improvements, I'd wrap it or make a shroud/muffler to knock down the dbs and call it a day. Well done, still less than a quiet-rated shop vac.
Gibt es deine Tutorials auch in Deutsch?
Nein
Thank you for the excellent video. Alias Manager has not been updated for FC 0.21. Recommend EasyAlias or just enter aliases manually.
Thanks for the tip. Will look at this one.
I liked your work. I could build one that is smaller but works on a 10 or 30w diode laser with a 40x40cm cutting area, a lot of people are buying this type of laser and don't find an efficient and cheap smoke collector to buy, at least not here in Brazil. There is only one for large equipment and high prices. gostei do seu trabalho . poderia montar um que seja menor mais que funciona em uma laser de diodo de 10 ou 30w area de corte 40x40cm, muita gente esta comprando este tipo de laser e não acha um coletor de fumaça eficiente e barato para comprar , pelo menos aqui no brasil não existe so tem para equipamentos grandes e preço alto.
Sounds like a good idea!
Brilliant. And cool game too.
Thank you!
So frustrating when they claim the links are in the description but they aren't there.
Is there any reason that you decided to make the carbon filter out of MDF instead of OSB like in the first version?
The only reason was that I had some scrap MDF around this time... 😏
sorry but I always like the original stuff, there is always a "better" idea, but the original is cooler .
I am making a similar filterbox, but i stack the filters, no spacing between them, do anyone have opinion on this solution?
I was thinking about this as well. I found it difficult to get a good seal between the filters that way.
The only downside, which may or may not be significant, is that with gaps you allow the air to get particles up to speed to penetrate the next layer. This may not be important however when u consider the process of capture I would think that if the filters are together then most capture happens at the surface of the following filter as opposed to deeper. and instead of the particle being able to penetrate some distance in, it will be stopped at the surface, resulting in a faster clogging than otherwise. I have no empirical data on this, just that it makes sense. You need distance between the filters and the inlet and outlet anyway to make sure that the air flows well enough to use most of the filter. otherwise the air just uses a small circle of the middle of the filter. You can visually illustrate what I mean by using a light source outside the box at the inlet hole. with the light at the hole, all the filter inside the box is illuminated, as you move away (simulating faster and faster airflow, or constructing the filter closer to the hole) the spot of light shrinks down to only illuminate a small spot in the center of the filter. After using a filter for a long time, check it to see where the discoloration is happening. all over or just in the middle? This also is a reason for space between filter. IE., allows particles to circulate and use other parts of the filter surface. It just occurred to me of a possible upgrade. considering the above, if u made the inlet configurable you could manage to use the whole filter and not just the middle. instead of an end wall with the inlet in the middle? offset it about 30-40% to one side. then occasionally rotate that panel so the inlet stream hits a different part of the filter. You can also avoid ALL these issues by making the filters the same size or (just slightly bigger) as the inlet openings. This of course would be a complete redesign of the system however.
The alias generator fails on 0.21.2 with a message "Unable to complete task" :( Wondering which other free software would be the best for furniture designs? I'm good with Blender3D, but it does not generate things dynamically based on entered values and it cannot create a technical drawing.
I think FreeCAD is among the open source systems the best alternative for furniture designs
First time using this software, instead of using a macro, I found you can manually set an alias in the top-right corner after selecting a cell.
Thanks for the greay explanation: please, normalize the volume of the audio, the table saw noise make me dizzy and my left year isn't working correctly since the audio becames
Thanks for the feedback. Normally I tune down the noise but sometimes one clip slips my attention...
Nice, thanks for sharing. Do you have to design these yourself or is there a website to download them from ?
All the downloads are in the blog article. Link in the description.
is there such a cad that doesn't work like photoshop where you have a million layers
If you look for something really simple maybe Tinkercad could be for you. It is however not free.
Hey you may really like GatorCAM for how quickly you can get your design CAMed. It's on my channel.
Great update - thank you very much for sharing. I'm currently researching and designing my own laser fume filter / air purifier, and had watched your earlier video, so this is a timely update - much appreciated.
Thank you!
Riecht man noch etwas beim Sperrholz oder mdf lasern?
Es riecht so wie wenn man im Zimmer einen Kamin an hat...
@@WayofWood Kommt bei Ihnen noch rauch hinten raus oder nur Luft?
Would it be better to make a vertical carbon pot with some PVC pipe, or make the box higher so the carbon part is flat with the air rising up through the filters ? eg; If you used 4 x 100mm pipes in a parallel set up then the air would move slowly through each filter and have more time for the fumes to be absorbed ?
Interesting idea - would you turn the filter basically on it's end and this use gravity for keeping the carbon in place?
@@WayofWood Yes that way the surface area is evenly spaced as well. with many in parallel there would not be so much restriction so the fan would not need to work as hard as the load would be spread across all the tubes. you could try putting carbon in the bottom and cotton in the top to make a hybrid all in one filter. Rain Water tanks have in inline screens that would hold the carbon and the rest would just sit on top of each other.
@maxgood42 Good idea!
Hi there and a big thank you to @wayowood for the effort and learning material. I have an issue with the clone function and the alias manager. I am on a Windows and FreeCAD version 0.21.1. Alias manager = Unaple to complete the task. And for the clone function, when changing the parametric values...no change in the clone objects. The only way to make it recompute is to go on the clone 'draft' and change the value of "Fuse" from true to false (or the otherway arround works as well) to have the clone being recomputed. Does anyone have the same issue? And of course does anyone have some sort of solution? Cheers and thank you
When a plugin stops working for me I usually just go back to an older version of FreeCAD - just try an older version...
Amazing work
Thank you!
Extremely helpful
Thank you!
I had to watch this presentation once and then play it back at one quarter speed to be able to follow your mouse clicks. I look forward to videos where you also say what you are clicking on so we can follow along at normal speed. This is an excellent presentation. Thank you very much for it!
There are quite a few slower videos that focus on the individual steps on my channel
@@WayofWood Great, thank you. I will check them out!
Looking forward to the new version once you've found a refillable highlighter.
Would love to use a refillable one but I only found markers that are either bulky or not refillable...
This is a really good video, I enjoy your videos but this one is special because I would like to try to build something like this for my father since he really enjoys caring for ants. Thank you
Thank you. Have fun with the build!
Actually i saw some people cutting black cardboard or black paper
That might work but cutting is anyhow not that practical given the small area
still a handy tool! Looking for a version that is screwable into the side clamp holder
You could just import the file in FreeCAD and create 2 holes there.
You can add a software to your list: Solid Edge Community Edition
Thanks, just what I was looking for! I'm still venting outside, but don't want the stink to ruin my neighbor's cookout. Your refillable carbon box is just the ticket; $300 filters every 6 months to a year isn't for me. My thoughts on improvement was to shorten the space between the 'hepa style' filters. I read that carbon needs dwell time, but regular particle filters can be stacked. Take care and happy Thanksgiving.
You sir are a master at your art! Know What Kind of Rare Breed You Are.
Thank you!
What filetype are you using when saving parts or master? Are you using dwg?
They all have to be native FreeCAD files
Thank you for the quick response (while I am actually still working on the project)!@@WayofWood
Great explanation, also of the spreadsheet. Thanks!
Thank you
I love the yellow tires ❤ I buy 4 yellow tires 👍🏻
*promosm*
Nicely done!!
Thank you!
Amazing. Well done! Very inspiring for an upcoming project :)
Thanks a lot. All the best for your project!
That's a good one. Just remembered that I need a similar table for myself. Too much staff on my table.
Thank you. Getting a clean desk was one of the main objectives of this build...
I don’t have a laser cutter but I NEED these invitations for my parents space-themed birthday party! I haven’t been able to find anything close to this for purchase anywhere. Would you be willing to make them?
Do you have a maker space in your area? They might be able to help you with this...
Great video! Appreciate the quick info on the spreadsheet module too, I had been meaning to figure out how that worked :)
Thanks 🙏
I am just at the stage of coming up with a design for KF700 which look like tje machine here. I wonder why the you went for floor mounting and did not use the holes that felder provide?
I had the feeling this would give me more stability but it might be just being overly cautious
