Laser engraver for 80€ - is a 3000mW laser worth the money?

In this video we review a cheap 3000mW laser engraver for around 80 bucks.
We want to test what it is able to cut and add some important safety features.

That might work but cutting is anyhow not that practical given the small area

Thank you. When you compare the price of the laser engraver with the one of a branding iron it is a really interesting alternative and you can engrave the current year or use different marks.

Great video! Finally someone who is competent reviewed this unit. Would you say it is worth buying this to engrave logos into a powder coat on metal?

I don’t know if the laser is strong enough to make it through a powder coating. It engraved the thin Ikea paint but even there the paint got not completely removed. With a K40 Laser you can easily engrave on powder coatings on metal (there should be a video where I show how the K40 engraved paint on aluminum)

I've got a K40 and yes like most owners of K40's I've had some issues to sort out (ground wire) the wire's where just twisted together as well as other things - BUT my question I just want ask is > I can't find a decent pair of co2 "en207" rated safety glasses that makes me feel comfortable and stop me being paranoid when I start using the new K40,high numbers of "claimed" Co2 rated glasses I've seen are around £40 - £50 with OD 6-7 but they won't protect you're eyes 100% from a direct hit,any advice on EU manufactures who have en207 glasses that will also go over prescription glasses or even a recommended pair as many I've seen are also out of my price range (on a budget) is there any out there that could be recommended as I've not even tested the machine yet until my eye's are protected when or if the mirrors need adjusting. Oh! Is it safe to look at a K40 laser during the cutting or engraving for 2 - 3 second's with even OD 5+ glasses that are not en207 rated?. Any information would be appreciated, Oh! Another brilliant video - keep them coming. Stay safe everyone! From the UK.

I have a link on my website to EN207 OD6+ glasses - which is the type I am using. They are in the 50-60€ range: wayofwood.com/tool/laser-protection-glasses/ However I find that having a safety switch in your mache shutting off the laser when opening the lid might be an even more important safety precaution: wayofwood.com/k40-laser-cutter-safety-switch/

The wavelength of the laser probably can't deal with white or reflections. How does the acrylic work with maybe a dark mask.. it might work better.

  • @WayofWood

That’s a good idea. Leaving the protective film on the acrylic and giving it a coat of spray pint might work.

All wavelengths of ligh have problems with the color white, reflective surfaces and even the lasers own color. I've seen a couple of people use a black marker over glass/metal and managed to get a decent etch. Black absorbs color and thus making it a good material to work with, then there's the problem where it's hard to tell that the engraving shows, but that can usualy be fixed with some paint and wiping off the excess top layer.

If you paint your acrylic piece with black marker/liquid chalk you will engrave it. Aluminium foil reflects and spreads light allover places, i wouldn't use it if i was you

I think it depends on what you want to do with it. If you look at it as a replacement for a "real" laser cutter like the K40 I am with you. If you look at it as a replacement for a branding iron it actually becomes an interesting alternative and you could also use it for smaller, decorartive engravings.

WayofWood not even good for that If it doesn’t go right and you lift off to look you will never get it to line up again Best to wait and save your money and get at minimum a K40
