This hits the ball out of the park. I admit I started to neglect OSS the last few years, but your video made my heart jump again! I really really hope you get some acknowledgement from the makers you reference... I promise to have another look at Inkscape and FreeCAD!!

Logos by Nick has some amazing Inkscape tutorials to get you started there. I don’t expect the guys from the @Making IT Podcast to find the time to watch video. I nevertheless had to make it as it feels wrong to me if @jimmydiresta disqualifies free software without ever trying any open source software. I don’t care about acknowledgment for me but I do care about acknowledgement for open source software. 😏

Fabulous video! Super useful to learn of all the open source software and what it compares to. As an amateur I might only need an application a few times a year, so that the subscription model is out of my budget. I wasn't aware of some of the alternatives so it was both a reminder that I can do many things without a subscription and it has introduced me to stuff that I didn't know existed. I now have the beginnings of a new adventure to explore and learn what these packages can do which is super exciting. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you. It’s always impressive what open source is capable. I was for example quite impressed to see that FreeCAD has a quite nice FEM workbench...

I was thinking about this while I was listening to that episode. All the complaints about the recent fusion 360 changes are solved by open source.

Agree and it would be great if there would be more makers supporting the open source community.

Great video. It's really nice to be made aware of the free options. Thx.

Thanks. Although I have been working with these software solutions for quite some time I am always surprised of new features and options. Which might be my favorite part of using open source: opening the software that updated over night and discover a new feature. :-)

Another great video, mate. I couldn’t be much happier to see a video like this being shared. Free (libre) software is absolutely essential, the software we use (or that which uses us) restricts our liberty and does so while becoming more and more of a central part of our collective lives. You can see the ubiquity of free software in the maker community whenever you visit a makerspace/hackerspace (though Fusion is common...) It would be nice to see bigger maker channels reflect this.

Couldn’t agree more. Especially as commercial software can be a big barrier to entry. If you are new to making the Adobe license fees might stop you from getting into design and making.

WayofWood Even worse than that, new makers find themselves reliant on proprietary software and the corporation behind it. I feel Adobe could probably double their fees and many would still pay since they’re so locked in to their software suite as well as being unaware of alternatives and unwilling to accept a huge interruption in their work flow (makers want to make, naturally).

This is where I decided to switch from Fusion to FreeCAD. A big corporation will always be driven by shareholder value. The fact that they don’t charge you money is not driven by altruism but by the fact that they are still working on their pricing strategy. 😏

WayofWood You almost manage to equal my scepticism of corporations, my friend. That is no small feat! CAD is a glaring shortfall in terms of free software, it’s a shame. Compare Fusion versus FreeCAD to Photoshop versus GIMP. Photoshop is a little more streamlined and has a few features that GIMP does not but, as you said in the video, there’s really nothing photoshop can do that GIMP can’t and the workflow is not dissimilar. This is the case in most areas (or even, as in the case of LibreOffice or VLC, prefer the free software distinctly). I use free software for 99+% of things but I would really like to eliminate all proprietary software. I’m also happy to be moving towards using open hardware especially The Open Book.

@@sambishop3211 That has nothing to do with scepticism ... it's pure economics. If a CEO wants to do a good job he has to maximize profit / shareholder value. In order to do so he has to work with the price elasticity of demand, i.e. everyone should ideally pay the max amount he is willing to pay for the product. If I were to define their pricing strategy the next thing I would introduce would be an advanced fee for users with more than 100 models that would be around 15-20$ a month. This way you would still get new users with the free entry version and as soon as they are locked in and their price elasticity goes down you can increase the revenues from that segment.

I use them all apart from Inkscape because until now I wasn't able to make a PDF in CMYK. Would you please let us know where to find the Foldable box plugin for Inkscape? Thanks
