Thanks for sharing all this hard work wayofwood! Some tips in case they’re helpful for others - I kept getting a ‘No perspective camera’ error message in the Raytracing workbench when trying to insert a new PovProject. The solution was in the toolbar: View -> Perspective View I also had trouble copying the WayofWood_RenderingWrapper macro file to the right part of my file system. Then I found I could do it within FreeCAD by going to Macro -> Macros, clicking Create, then pasting the macro filename and file contents.

Hi, Thanks a lot for your great videos. I think this video should be added in the Freecad Playlist, and probably labelled #06. This could ease following your great tutorials on Freecad. Winting for the next one !

@@WayofWood Thx for you great answer. Well if you ask .. Please keep in mind I am really a newbie on freecad.... Regarding the assembly part, are there any tools / library to help representing HOW things are put together (like dovetails, biscuits, dowels, cam lock nuts...). Or a way to create templates representing it, that can be automatically repeated using a "pattern" (Macros?). For the simple case of dowels for exemple, if you need to make a hole evey 32mm... There must be another way than cloning the shape every time manually, and shifting it manually (??)? This becomes a bit more tricky with cam lock nuts, where each face will have to be modified in different ways. Maybe some scripts / macros exist / can be defined ? If so, how ? Hope my question was clear enough...

Hey! Glad to see you upload, hope everything’s going well during the pandemic. Thanks for doing another FreeCAD video! I cannot get going with this software. Everything is so unintuitive. Due to your videos, I started assembling bits in separate files then tried to assemble them but it would not work at all. Creating the individual components was fine but trying to assemble as you describe didn’t work for me at all. The components would end up at strange angles to one another... I hope you keep doing FreeCAD stuff and I get better at it. I’ve caved and used SketchUp a couple of times now, wish there was a Linux version of Make! Anyway, thanks for the video. Liked it before I’ve even watched it. (:

Thank you. Your problems with the assembling sounds as if the two parts are only aligned by one constraint. Try adding more constraints - you need usually three constraints to align two parts properly.

WayofWood That makes sense. Not sure why I’ve had such a hard time with FreeCAD. I normally learn software, even if not particularly intuitive, very easily. One of those things, I suppose. I’ll keep up with it and keep referring back to your videos as well as the documentation. It’s the sort of video that’s easy for you to do without having to obtain any materials etc. Not sure about where you are but it’s been more difficult to get timber through this crisis where I am. Never mind ordering new tools online! Anyway, thanks again. I’ll make sure to like, share etc every video you put out. I think your channel will be big and the sooner the better, right? (:

The challenge with FreeCAD is that it is a real community effort. Other OSS software such as Blender have due to history and their organization a more centralized structure and even if their interface is not intuitive it is at least consistent. In FreeCAD even basic behaviors like the selection logic changes from one workbench to another. This makes the learning curve very steep. It would be great to have a UI/UX overhaul from a talented designer. 😏

Nice and compact tutorial! For my task at the moment, the texture mappings results look quite decent for an osb style look, for my furniture. My issue is that the look works for as long as i have open the texture mapping window. when i close it it disappears! I would like to continue work with the texture applied, editing the assembly, placing measurements on it and so on. Will these be possible if i follow your final solution steps?

I don't know. If it doesn't work you can always export to blender where you have a lot of possibilities in terms of texturing.

Thank you for the information. The previous video has help me a lot learning about A2 plus use. Trying to work with rendering (my knowledge about this point is zero), I have a trouble with the path of povray software (to use in the preference place). As I am using Windows, the path that you use in the video is not useful for me (sounds that it is Linux path there). Is this path like the following? C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\POV-Ray for Windows v3.7? (of course UserName would be change by my own one). I am trying to use Render (which would be newer than Raytracing, but the path issue is the same). Thanks and Regards.

This field expects the path to the povray executable as an input. So after installing and downloading Povray you have to look for the Povray.exe file (most likely somewhere in c:\Programs\Povray or a similar folder) and copy the path into the settings.

@@WayofWood I have found that the exe file is not named Povray (under Windows 10 environment), but pvengine64.exe. It is in the following path: "C:\Program Files\POV-Ray\v3.7\bin\pvengine64.exe". Also, it is necessary to uncheck the IO restrictions in Povray. After that I could get a first renderized image.

Weird ... it might has to do something with the way how the temporary file is created. Can you take a look in your explorer, enter %TEMP% as a directory and look if there is a recent .pov file?
