  Construction began in 1255. . This Palazzo del Podestà, as it was originally called, is the oldest public building in Florence. This austere crenellated building served as a model for the construction of the Palazzo Vecchio.

  The palace, founded in 1255, built to serve as the first public building in medieval Florence, . Starting in 1500, the building became the headquarters of the "Bargello", meaning the head of the city's police, and was used as a prison for the following centuries. It was opened in 1865 as the first National Museum of the then Kingdom of Italy, dedicated to the arts of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The rich and varied collections gathered here since that time are today the pride of the Bargello Museum:
