Varanasi known as the "City of Light", "luminous city as the eminent seat of learning" According to Hindu mythology, Varanasi was founded by Shiva, (one of the three main deities along with Brahma and Vishnu) is therefore considered an extremely holy place.

Varanasi-Încă din secolul 21 î.Hr., este cunoscut ca unul dintre locurile sacre ale Indiei antice. Până în secolul al II-lea, așezarea a fost principalul centru al budismului. Este un oraș de pe râul Gange, în nordul Indiei. Ocupă un loc central în tradițiile de pelerinaj, nemurire și doliu din lumea hindusă.

On dit que quiconque meurt à Varanasi atteint moksha (l'équivalent bouddhiste du Nirvana), son âme va au paradis. moksha signifie rompre avec le cycle des réincarnations, la libération suprême du matériel, l'éternité.

Mother Ganga, as she is also called, has the power to wash away the sins of faithful Hindus, a purifying, uplifting bath in the Ganges being mandatory for them at least once in their life. It is believed that this ritual bath frees from the karmas of previous lives and prepares them for death and then a future life without sin
