It is said that whoever dies in Varanasi, attains moksha (the Buddhist equivalent of Nirvana), his soul goes to heaven. Moksha means breaking from the cycle of reincarnations, the supreme liberation from material, eternity.

I Ghat di Varanasi sono argini a gradoni costituiti da lastre di pietra lungo la riva del fiume dove i pellegrini eseguono abluzioni rituali. Varanasi ha almeno 84 ghat, la maggior parte dei quali vengono utilizzati per il bagno dei pellegrini e per la cerimonia indù della puja, spiritualmente significativa, mentre alcuni sono utilizzati esclusivamente come luoghi di cremazione indù.
